I am 80 and a 100 % Disabled American Veteran of the Vietnam War Era. I could have not volunteered, due to sinus and allergy problems, and I was treated by being allergy tested in the service and received relief with shots. Being an only son, I was told several times by others that I would not have been sent to combat such as in Vietnam without volunteering. Most combat veterans in Vietnam were drafted minorities, and poorer less educated people. Others didn't serve, as I know many in my generatio. 😮

In 1960, my father joined the Air Force at the age of 18. About two weeks into basic training he got a letter telling him he'd been drafted into the Army. My father turned the letter over and wrote "Look where you mailed this. If you want me, come and get me." He never heard another thing about it.

So few Americans understand that getting a driver's license registers you for the Selective Service. Because 1. It's just slipped in as a check box on the application, and... 2. Plenty of 17 and 18 year olds don't even know that the "draft" is called the "selective service", so even if they see the box, they think little of it.

@@hipstergod Well, that's perhaps one reason why the state and federal governments arent super interested in bolstering public transport considering they also complain about low recruitment/retention in the military. If you live in a city, you don't necessarily need a driver's license. If you can take a bus/train/tram/bike places, and order an uber for the odd time you can't use one of the others...you don't really need one. But I live in a rural place and it really isn't much of a choice out here, you're right.

Maximum age to join the Navy is now 42. You just have to ship to boot camp before you turn 42. There are a ton of folks that want to join. Genesis is killing numbers. Congress put it into play in February 2022. MEPS now gets access to your digital medical record and goes back to birth. It’s not that people don’t want to join. It’s that what use to take a week is now taking 6 months or more to get someone pre approved to go to MEPS. Now, all those entering the Navy are getting $10,000 to $75,000. If you go submarines, you get $35,000. Most shipping in a month are getting $25,000 after boot camp.

They may or may not consider you aged out depending what your rank was when you were discharged. A college friend made his goal of reaching the rank of major in the Marines. He chose to retire rather than going through another divorce. (Neither of his ex-wives could handle it either though the 2nd wife also was in the service when they met. His third wife has not made any indications that she wanted him to, but since he is nearly 50 now he decided it was time to retire.)

My Dad was drafted for Korea even though he was not supposed to be eligible due to being accepted for a master's degree program. I only found out a few years ago that he knew of this and protested but still served at a microwave communications station in West Germany. He says it is probably one the best things he has ever done even though he should have been exempt. He is 92 now and his military service card is still accepted by many restaurants for their discounts just by asking even if it is not mentioned on signs or anywhere near a patriotic holiday. Now my nephew is in his early thirties but is a first responder. I asked him once if he would volunteer in to serve in the military. He is too old to be drafted, but voluntary service would still be permitted. At the time he was not a married man yet and he said yes.

In Brazil we have mandatory military service for all men aged 18. Honestly it's pretty lit, you learn how to shoot, how to be disciplined, VERY useful life skills such as cleaning, cooking, electronic literacy, mechanics, working as a team. And if anyone tries to start trouble with us they'll have to face an entire country of professional militia.

Honesty I think everyone should have some formal military training as a youth such as the ROTC or something similar in my opinion (which I'm just some random nobody so my opinion doesn't mean much) but in a nut shell it helps keep young people physically fit and also allows for a structure that can help some who need it when they don't have a direction to go to. Sometimes idle hands are the most dangerous thing in the world.

I’m active in the army and I’ve always wondered if a draft did happened what would happen? Would it be a needs of the military type of situation? Will they get put in whatever jobs are needed? Can they pick what branch? What happens if they fail the fitness test for the specific branch? Asvab? Also no shade but there’s millions of Americans aged 18-25 who are so out of shape it would be pointless to have them join.

Draft would be nearly impossible in modern days, as they would gain an enemy within the country very quickly, which would make the war they are trying to force you to enter, seem irrelevant compared to the homefront battle

As a woman, I tried joining the military in 2012 and couldn’t due to my vision, mental illness and asthma so even if they tried to enact a draft for both women and men, I wouldn’t even qualify. They’d say errr no thanks 🙂‍↔️

When I was in my 20s, I tried and listing seven times. Five times I took the test and I passed with captains rank and yet I was told to take a hike so honestly, I think the US government doesn’t really care who you are only care about people who are absolutely perfect according to what they think perfect is, and I honestly have to say that it’s very disheartening to want to serve your country and be told that you can’t do that because of garbage. If the US government is so interested in having people serve between years of 18 and 25, perhaps they should make it easier for you to actually enlist in the US military and since all I ever wanted to do was be part of the logistics of the US military as opposed to carrying a gun I thought that it might be reasonable to fly the C130 cargo plane I would’ve loved to serve the US military because I could’ve learned to fly for free and been able to supply military equipment and supplies to soldiers everywhere in the world. Like I said, however, US military is fickle about what they are willing to do and I find their ignorance and attitude towards people who are willing to serve an affront to the US citizen. Go ahead and enlist if you wish if that’s really what you wanna do but understand that the US military is picky about who they want to serve and they don’t make any necessary exceptions for anyone all they care about is people who they consider to be perfect, and instead of providing the discipline and needed requirement for skills to different people they sit there and complain because they don’t have enough people

Also the military doesn't just let anyone learn how to become a pilot. Lastly the test has waivers and such for people who score poorly on the test. It's actually pretty easy to get in. As long as you don't have serious medical issues, and are able to run a and a half in about 13 mins. You could get in. My sources? I'm in the U.S. Navy.

Have you ever thought why does the draft require 18 to 26 men to register but not woman. But equality is a main focus in all other areas

probably cause of the toxic mindset that women are needed to populate the earth and that’s their only job so why risk their life plus also because the draft is just old school

it can be argued that the draft is preferable to a career military system because if you have a draft that means family of those in power may get drafted which puts a counter pressure on those in power against warmongering... i think the draft could be a good thing if it was also a legal requirement that only representatives who have children that could get drafted get to vote for war.... that way its not a lot of rich old men who are just sending a lot of poor people unrelated to them to die in wars for their benefit. and the presiden should absolutely never be allowed to declare war on conduct any special military operations without a vote frankly that power should not be afforded him at all!
