Should I deadhead my hydrangeas is a question i get asked a lot. I will show you how and when to deadhead hydrangeas - and explain the differences between deadheading hydrangeas and pruning hydrangeas .
"Whether to prune hydrangeas is often debated, but studies have shown that dead-heading spent flowers definitely encourages more and bigger blooms. All hydrangeas benefit from regular dead-heading to encourage more hydrangea blooms.

Ok, we now know we totally screwed up our hydrangeas. My husband was cutting the WHOLE PLANT back to the ground in Sept. once the leaves turn completely black from frost. We get huge lush green bushes back in the spring, but no flowers. My question is, do we just leave the plant go from now on, even with those black dead leaves?

I just moved from Hawaii to the PNW. I'm excited that I bought a home with a few hydrangea plants but had no idea how to care for them. I just watched 3 videos from others who talked about deadheading, pruning, new growth, old growth. I had no idea what they were talking about until I came across your video here. I love your enthusiasm and all the info you provided. Excellent video! I'm going to watch all of your videos now. House cleaning can wait! 😁

Sometimes, that’s all a person needs, is to hear someone say not to stress. I’ve been stressing about when to deadhead. I realize now that what I did last year, was I pruned two of my plants instead of deadheading. I’m going out to deadhead this morning, things will look neater. Thanks for giving me that extra push and confidence.

So excited to have found your channel! I’m a newbie to flower gardening. Hydrangea are my all time favorite flowers and I planted two of them! Unfortunately, here in MA, it’s been so hot this summer, my beautiful blue blooms are now green. Still pretty, but not as pretty as the blue. I’ve done my best to keep up with watering (despite a ban), but I’m afraid it’s just been too hot. I had hoped they’d stay bluer longer. This video was SO helpful to learn when and how to deadhead. I’ll be sure to this in the Spring. Fingers crossed next year’s blooms will be just as plentiful. Looking forward to many more of your helpful and easy to understand gardening tips!!! 💕

We bought a home with the biggest plant I’ve ever seen, she is old. Can’t believe I didn’t kill her. Anyways, past 8 years I have seriously over pruned. Last year I didn’t touch the plant and this spring I did what i just saw you do (I don’t know what inspired me). Now she has more budding than ever! All the stems are standing! Perhaps no more flowers laying on the ground, we have super strong stems this year. I need to sub ‘cause my wife loves those huge white flowers. Teach me lady, teach me.

@KellyLehman

I usually leave my blooms in place for winter interest except for the giant ones . Those I try to deadhead so the snow doesn’t sit on them and cause the branches to snap . You can deadhead all of them if you like that look better but I would not do a heavy pruning this time of year ( early fall)

HI and thanks for your videos, I have a 30 yr old climbing hydrangea. It sits like a canapy. I have to trim in early spring because it gets too heavy.. But underneath the canopy is lots of old wood with thick hard to trim branches. I have tried to get throw them but sometimes I have not been able.. A few. pieces could use a very strong person or a saw? I think if I could trim it it would fill out underneath. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks again for all your info you share!

Thank you so much for this video. I’m a noob in gardening and hydrangeas. I live in Kansas City and I’m wondering when is it the right time to “deadhead”. Thanks in advance.

Should we only deadhead in spring? Thank you for your videos!

Hi Kelly can I rightly assume that this only applies to Macrophylla types. Love your channel

Thanks. I used this advice to deadhead my hydrangeas. Do the dead flowers fall off on their own if you don't deadhead them or would they be there next to the new flowers in summer?

I wish you had addressed deadheading during the blooming season. I don't know what variety I have, but it seems to bloom on old growth - bright green stems coming off old wood.

I've been cutting the flowers off down to the old wood. Whooops?

Hi, just found your channel and subscribed. Love it! I planted several hydrangeas in pots a month ago - 4 large pots and 1 six foot planter on the side of my house. All are thriving with blooms and new blooms coming in. My question is will the mulch I just added at the bases crowd them or prevent them from breathing? I cleaned out the dead leaves before adding the mulch but after watching your video I’m worried they won’t be able to breath now. I’m in sunny Southern California so I added the mulch to keep the top soil from drying out. They’re mostly shaded but do get some sun.

Hi Melissa , loved reading about your hydrangeas . I would add just a small layer of mulch but pull it back a few inches from the stems of the plant . Make sure they get at least 6 hours of sun if you want maximum blooms . Thank you for watching my hydrangeas care video🌻🌸🌸🤗 I’d like to invite you to join my Kelly Lehman Flower Tribe Facebook Group.Flower Tribe members can post images of their gardens from all around the world and ask and answer garden questions with each other . Kelly, this was really helpful for me! :-). I cut my Endless Summer way back last year, n’ no blooming this year! UGH! I know that I must have disturbed the growth pattern so I’m leaving everything alone and HOPEFULLY next season ALL WILL BE WELL AGAIN! However, I’m wondering when would be a good time for me to fertilize so that I get a “blue” bloom?? Do it now as we head into fall, or wait till spring??? Thanks so much for your GREAT videos! Have a lovely day! And THANK YOU, too, for the “no stressing” tip! I needed that! :-). Sending SMILES from Madison, WI! :-)))))

Thank you Judith. Loved your comment 👍 spring is the best time to fertilize . However, too much fertilizer may inhibit bloom growth . I made a video explaining why. Hope you find it helpful . 👏🌸 LUSH LEAVES BUT NO BLOOMS? ➡️ kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYWwZniMqdZ-aa8

Hydrangea is a great medicinal plant as well, hydrangea is used for urinary tract problems, infections of the bladder, urethra and prostate; enlarged prostate; and kidney stones. If not mistaken it's great for bouts of severe hay fever too.
