My grandmother had some of the largest, most beautiful Hydrangeas. They were planted on the North side of her home. She never did anything special with these beautiful plants. It's amazing how carefree folks were back then, yet had the most beautiful flower gardens.

I don't remember my parents spending a dime to have a beautiful garden, now everything costs an arm and a leg and the results are still not that great. A neighbour brought a hydrangea cutting from California to Kerala and it was surprising to see this plant, carelessly put near her doorstep in full sunlight shoot up and bloom without any magic treatment with huge blooms

Thank you for your knowledge of the hydrangea. I learned a lot about pruning that I didn’t know. Growing up they were my mom’s favorite. We lived in coal country and she used the coal ash to enhance the color. It made an intense blue and neighbor’s enjoyed the beauty as well as our family.

I am also from North England. I am very old and had a girl-friend who was a land-girl in the war time. These girls grew food for the nation and were experts. She had a magnificent garden which bloomed nearly all the year round and her secret was . If a plant did not perform Schlep it out and Schlog it !

Wow, that's fantastic and thank you for telling us. Those "land girls" were largely unsung heroines, often plucked from towns and cities, they adapted to rural, agricultural life and made a huge contribution to the war effort. We pretty much have the same ideology, If a variety is not able to perform on its own, then it is "yanked" form our production schedules.

My family lives in the US and were not as affected by the wars, but were by the Great Depression. My gramma and grandpa were born in 1917 and 1903 respectively, and I was raised by them in the 1970s and 80s and learned a lot about how to put by, and care for crops, as well as cows. As for hydrangeas, the one mop head blue one by the side of the 3 story house became her favorite. She had grown it for beauty, to take to all of the family graves on Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day). But one day she was alone, elderly, and painting the house by herself on a ladder that in soft soil moved and she fell. While she had Padget’s and bowed legs, which means she should have had all her bone shatter, she walked away hobbling with just bruises and pain and broke nothing but the bush that cushioned her fall! It split down the center stalk, but it lived!! This year I bought a pink Summer Crush hydrangea to put into a planter in memory of her, and will cut the flowers for Mother’s Day in may and put onto her and grandpa’s grave.

I moved into a house that had a well established mop head style. I only deadhead just below the dead flower. This plant had pink flowers so I’ve added the color changing pellets and the last few years they have become a nice purple though I’m trying for the blue. My plant faces almost due east till about 12-1p. I have a nice amount of buds on it the bush this year. I’m in Camden County, NJ

Thank you, and well done getting your plant to change color. When you think about it, it is incredible and quite unique how we can alter the color of these mophead types by adjusting the soil. To my knowledge, no other plant type has this capability which is why it makes it so amazing. Just bear in mind that the color hues are determined also by the individual variety. So, if you desire blue, then you will have to buy another variety.... Light pink colored ones will be shades of sky or baby blue, whereas deeper pink ones (like your plant) will take on deeper shades of dark blue or purples. Brilliant, incredibly thorough thank you I learned a lot. I moved at the end of '21 and brought two hydrangeas with me that I had dug up and neither of them flowered last year. I think they are macrophylla types they are white, hoping for flowers this year, fingers crossed ! I had to smile when you popped the trash can over its head we had -11c here for a week in December and I covered many things with bubble wrap, upturned extra large planters and large boxes from when I moved and it did work ! This video is very useful. The perfectly flowering big leaf Hydrangea stopped blooming when I pruned incorrectly two years ago. Now, with this new info, I can go out and figure out what needs to done. It has great healthy leaves though 😊

THANKS for another great instructional video. Honestly, with all the magnificent newer, cold-hardy hydrangea cultivars today, I don't want to have to work that hard to protect hydrangeas in the my bitter cold 5b zone winter. I would dig those up and replace with some of the gorgeous tough new varieties from Proven Winners. Endless Summer is also a winner in my yard.

The little tip about mounding up the mulch around their bases in Autumn is however worth doing and should help you get better results. THANK YOU! I have an Endless Summer Hydrangea growing in snowy Minnesota and it has been deeply unhappy. I may have to move it to a more suitable location in the yard this year, but the overwintering tip is very helpful!

Great information. Ive had my hydrangea for over 20 years, it blooms on old wood. 1st year i had it, icut it to the ground in the spring after all frost and freezes were over. Wrong thing to do.I never done that again. I blooms so beautiful, all colors pink, purple, blue, white and even green. Huge beautiful blooms. But this year i didnt know it was going to frost and she already had green on her. I didst cover her up with my white sheet that i always use. She came back out of the roots, she's lush, green and great big as usual, but she didn't bloom. That's fine, she still alive. Ill just have to really watch her next spring. Great information from an expert grower. Here in WNY z5a to 6 a I’ve given up on macrophyllla hydrangeas bc in February we very often get a warm week that brings out the buds on macs which then freeze when cold returns for another 2 months. The flowers on these hydrangeas are most spectacular, however not here in my zone. I stick to arborescens, panicles, and lace caps which perform reliably & spectacularly!

But we would suggest thar you don't give up on the Mophead types yet, because we know of a lady in Syracuse, NY area, that annually protects these older Vars. and has lovely displays and also the newer remontant types (that flower on the new wood as well as the old), are getting better and better all the time. Plant breeders are doing some sterling work, so, hand in there and let us know how you get on. I have the big leaves one and I trimmed it every year. It grew crazy but no flowers. I took one out and replaced it with something else. I decided to research and learned that it was my fault not knowing how to care for them. I now able to get it bloomed for couple of year now. I wish I have come across your channel sooner. I grew up by the sea in southern England and everywhere people had flourishing flowering hydrangeas. But I now live 35 miles inland and we have frosts! Now I know why my hydrangeas don't flower - late April or early May frosts kill the emerging flower buds. Next winter I will move them into my conservatory with blankets. I've lucked- out to find a channel posting new videos. Have always had a soft spot for blue hydrangeas. I bought a potted endless summer last season. Couldn't get it into the ground so I brought it in for the winter. I thought I'd read that they flower off of the old wood. Over the winter I saw a green leaf and accidentally snapped it off. I thought I' d done it in but I see yours putting-out from the crown. The stems at the crown feel supple so I' m hoping it comes back. All your bushes are gorgeous.

This was a very useful video! I’m pretty sure my buds were killed off by a cold winter because the old wood has many buds but they all seem to be dead and dried out. I will try to insulate them this winter! But, disappointing that I won’t have my beautiful blooms! Tracy, don't despair too much. Your plant might still flower, especially if it is one of the remontant ones that I mention towards the end of the video. Mounding, up the mulch around the base of the stems (also described near the end), works well too. The first sign will be the little green buds appearing at the tops of the new growth (an example is also shown around the middle of the video), so watch for that and if they show up you, then you will be getting big gorgeous flowers. If the worst happens, and no buds appear, you will still have strong bushy shoots and with young plants that is exactly what you want at first anyway.

I learn so much from you and after finding your channel, several months back, I feel like I need your input before I make a decision. 😂 I wish I had thought that on a recent purchase of two flowering mop head hydrangeas from a big box store. I brought them home and planted them in two concrete planters on my deck, watered them in and went about my life. A few days later we got a frost (zone 6b) and half the flower heads were mush. I cut those off and hoping so much that I will get new flowers by summer. 🙏

We sometimes joke, that over the years "we've killed many plants - so you don't have to"! 😅😁😂 So, it is good that you are able to take advantage of this in the videos that we post, here on our channel. 👍😉 In regard to your hydrangeas, it depends (a lot) on what varieties they are. For example if they are remontant (or not). As a reminder, these are the ones that David's talks about near the end of the video. If they were greenhouse forced (like the ones David also mentions in the video), they are likely to have their tips (with dormant flower buds) damaged in subsequent winters, so unfortunately they are unlikely to flower reliably outdoors. You could try protecting them or bringing them indoors to a cool place like a basement or garage - somewhere that's frost free, but cool enough to keep them dormant. But, this is tricky (and not easy), because they tend to start into growth early, and get drawn up in low light conditions. That's why, we test and trial our varieties so much, and why we work so closely with our partnering garden centers. The idea is to identify the best performers for this region, and then through our network, have them stock the ones that they believe are best for each neighborhood. And then, have them back that up with their extensive expertise, and experiences of what goes on in the their backyards! Nothing is ever perfect, but by visiting your local places and seeing what works well in your neighbors gardens, you stand a much better (and easier) chance of consistent success. This process is ongoing and getting better all the time, so if you haven't already, you might like to think about subscribing to our channel, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we will be doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. This video and information was excellent. Wish I’d seen it a few years ago, sigh… I’m in Zone 10 Northern CA. I have a 3 year old Monrovia Blue Enchantress hydrangea macrophylla ‘Monmar’ about 4’ tall in part shade, very happy. It is starting to bloom. I missed fertilizing it with slow release granular fertilizer in early spring. Is there any point now? Would it like any liquid fertilizer? I am also not clear on if my irrigation is sufficient but guess it’s OK since it’s blooming … wish I had guidelines for plants like this. We won’t get rain again until next winter.

I've watched two of David's videos on hydrangaes and he is incredible teacher...so detailed and he leaves nothing out. I needed this video back in 2006 when I planted Endless Summer in Nebraska...not my idea but in my landscaper's plan. I've been struggling to get them to bloom ever since and over the years have used some of the suggestions made here. But alas, the majority of canes are mostly dead coming out of winter and the new blooms don't show up until October. I do get a few blooms but very few. Nevertheless, the foilage is abundant :{ Had I known this back then, I would have dug them up and replaced them. Now the roots have spread and are too big and I'm too old to start over.

My sentiments about endless summer exactly. Very frustrating plant. I live in illinois zone 5 and have had this dumb plant for over 7 years and it has bloomed sparingly. One last season using cages and leaves and if it fails again i will rip it out

In your area, insulating the crown of the plants is going to be important. Also when you try it, we would suggest you plant your varieties in spring or early summer, that way they will have the longest possible time to settle in and establish before the rigors of winter begin.

I’ve had mine on the north side of our home for years. This year it has the prettiest foliage it has ever had, is almost two feet tall, but no blossoms. Actually looks healthy, but I’ll be shocked to get a flower. Thinking of transplanting!

The north side is the coldest orientation, so moving it to warmer south or west side or into a more protected corner or spot behind an evergreen or wall etc. might help to protect the precious overwintering buds. When they are growing well and making plenty of green healthy foliage, it's usually because the buds (with the little embryonic flower buds) are getting damaged during the winter. If you refer to this video again (especially around the 8 minute mark) it will explain more, and show that I have the same issue going on in my own garden 😥! And, show you possible alternative remedies (besides transplanting). Try (if you can) to watch the whole video right through to the end, because then you'll hear me talk about the "remontant" ones.... These are more recent introductions that even if the tops of the plants can get damaged, they can grow out and flower on the new green growth made during the current year. 😄 I hope this explains the issue better 😉💚👍

Most of my endless summer hydrangea buds died in the spring frost. A few leaves are peeping up from the bottom. I've been so worried the plant will not flower this year. It's great that there is hope. Thank you so much for your video.

Deer eat the stem ends of my panicle hydrangea (Proven Winners Vanilla Strawberry) every single winter (zone 4, Michigan) and every single summer it has beautiful blooms that never fail to get a compliment! I am giving my Endless Summer varieties to friends that live in warmer areas, and replacing them with the panicle type because they bloom so reliably on new wood. The deer actually do me a favor by pruning it when I've gotten too busy to do it myself, lol! Hydrangeas are my favorite... so easy to care for, and such gorgeous flowers!

Mosquitos like shallow water. Mostly breed in pots saucers and the like. I have three ponds in Sydney Australia. I never get mosquito larvae in them. I do get them in parts of the garden where I have forgotten to empty shallow water from.

I really like this video and the attention to detail that David has put into it very impressive for someone like me that has done a lot of experimenting. With regards to the approaches of trying to protect the in-ground plants thru the winter (Boston, MA area so ca be harsh)... I have tried a couple things, namely the galvanized netting (I used chickenwire which is not as effective from a supporting weight perspective) - but the problem I had there is that the weight of snow crushed the delicate buds - even using the rake end as David shows in the video can be damaging as they are delicate. Now so I said to myself, ok, lets completely protect the buds from the elements, and so I bought a clear plastic greenhouse from GrowIT which offered full protection from the elements thru the entire winter while also providing full light. I remember mid-winter looking thru at the buds on the ends of each of the stems, they were gorgeous and plump. Unfortunately at one point in the spring, I dont know when, but at one point those beautiful buds all just rotted/dried up and very few of them survived, while the whole time protected from wind snow and rain but not the temperature which you cant really control. I am thinking that that variation in temperature change had an impact causing the buds to die/rot and that it really depends on the particular winter/spring which varies year to year, BUT the stems themselves did survive and are currently sending out buds - the question will be will those buds heavily flower - thats the question I will have the answer to in the next month or so. The variety in this case is a dwarf hydrangea I bought from Home Depot and supplied by Weiss Nurseries out of NY (they truly are dwarf which is great for the specific location along a low stone wall - larger would be awkward looking) and I know as a fact that it has the potential to flower heavily as when I first purchased them but have since gotten mixed results hence the measures I have just described that I have taken With regards to mulching heavily at the base, I make my own leaf mulch from a Yard Machines mulcher and heavily mulch the base but I dont feel that that has made so much of a difference even though it sounds like a good idea and does look good also. Finally I didnt know about the remontant variety that was very interesting about the history if you google it and something certainly worth trying if doing new purchases.

I live in Detroit area where winter can be as cold as -25C once in 10 years or -18C every year! I have had that no-flower problem for a few years because winter cold kills all branches above the ground. Then last year I buried the branches before winter came with dead leaves and dirt. I took them out right after the threat of frost was no more.. Apparently they all survived and were already sending out green leaves! This year the flowers came early in the summer and I got so many flowers that their weights bend many branches nearly to the ground... cheers!

That's great to hear, and well done. This is pretty much the same principle of insulating the buds and stems. With larger plants it can be difficult to get all the branches covered, especially those near the top of the plants, which is why we were showing the other ways to stop the frost and cold weather from damaging those precious buds.

I am just worried it's too cold here for your method to provide enough protection in winter... but, you never know! Indeed it's not easy to bury the branches and I had to collect lots of check-mark shaped twigs in the woods and used them to hold the branches down to the ground...
