As a kid my father used to get access to lakes where the fish were stunted and after we harvested a bunch of fish the lake, habitat and fish of all kinds rebounded and flourished. Great video!

Great video! I eat plenty of largemouth and think they make great fish tacos. I also have a small pond on my property (less than an acre), and you have to take out at least 40-50 largemouth in the 12-16 inch range every year, to prevent an overpopulation of stunted and starving fish. A lot of people say they are trash fish, or get pissed off because you are harvesting the "sport fish", but if you don't manage them properly, especially in smaller lakes and ponds, you have little chance of ending up with big bass. Also, when fishing a frog, I like to trim the legs off quite a bit. Seems to help prevent short strikes. Bending the hooks slightly upward also seems to help me get more hookups.

Hey Robert, good video as always. A little trick for your next hot weather excursions: freeze some small bottles of water and keep them in a cooler. When the heat really starts kicking, put one in your PFD against your chest. It will keep you out on the water even in the worst heat.

I currently live in Meridian, Mississippi. I loved this video! Every private pond/lake that we are permitted to fish around here, if you catch a bass between ½-1½ lbs, the owners do NOT want them put back in the ponds/lakes. You can either eat them, stock a new pond/lake, or give them to someone else to eat. Fyi... it wasn't even hot yet when you guys were here fishing. You should come back in July or August. And so far, I've caught my PB and 2nd best both in the first week of August. 😂

This happened years ago where I got stuck in a long 9 day River voyage. Loaded to the hilt with gear. Musky tackle with me and there was another log ahead of me. I tied my anchor rope to the Muskie lures and threw them to the next log. After about 45 minutes. I was free… no signal there… all alone! Mcgiver shows helped!!

Great frogg'n video and discussion about harvesting a few bass. I can relate to resorting to "sneaking" a couple of 12-14" inchers home in my picnic basket so I don't trigger a response from the bass purists. Does the same logic of under harvesting apply to larger highland reservoirs that are chock full of small bass? Ryan referenced private ponds mainly. Thanks!

Completely agree with everything said. Logically, it makes sense to remove the energetic, small bait chasers to leave more forage in the lake for bigger fish. It’s a shame that so many people are shamed online for keeping such delicious fish, and at the same time are, ultimately, helping their fisheries!

In Wisconsin, it is illegal to throw the entrails into the waters ! I know, you're not in Wisconsin ! Some tough fishing in all those Lilly Pads with a top water frog ! The little gator was cool to see close-up, and I know that's not what you were after !!! FREE WILLY !!! L O L I cooked a Large Mouth on a grill with the skin still on the fish. It tasted so bad, that I never cared to try one ever again ( MY MISTAKE ) ! I WAS FISHING A TOP-WATER FROG ON THE FLAMBEAU IN WISCONSIN, AND I SAID THE SAME THING YOU SAID... What would a frog do ( act ) to swim back to shore ? That's when I caught a 52 inch Musky ! My first Musky, and my biggest Musky ! Good video here ! I enjoyed the show ! KEEP THEM COMING !

The culling thing is definitely true. Most of my fishing is done at a pretty small private community lake, and none of the bass there are over 18 inches. The vast majority are in the 10-15" range, I've only caught one that was bigger. The problem is, there are far too many of them. Too many fish, not enough food. Conservation wants people to not put the bass back when they're caught, the residents tell me to just thrown them on the bank (I can't do that). Sadly I'm part of the problem. I've probably caught a hundred bass in that lake at this point, but I've never kept fish before. Ever. I wouldn't even know what to do with it if I did. I've been trying to talk myself into doing it for years, I just haven't managed it yet.

Fire content as always. And I'd love those paddles. Can't say I'm a fan of encouraging keeping bass. If you are fishing a private pond and the owner needs some culled out for pond management I get it. But with the extreme fishing pressure everywhere I just don't think it's a good idea to suggest what most of us bass fisherman frown upon. If everybody kept a few there would be no bass and no good fish to catch, which has been the case for quite a few years, decades. It took decades to build back the bass population everywhere because when I was a kid everybody kept everything and decimated the population. This is especially true when it comes to smaller ponds. I grew up on the river in Tennessee where they are holding the bass masters and it is the toughest tournament of the year and is so proclaimed by all of the pros fishing it. This is because of irresponsible taking of fish for too many years and unregulated dumping of batteries and bad chemicals. We have to be careful about those who are harvesters and that number is far too large. Such is represented by the opinion of the first comment below. But to each their own

They’re the ones that are best at raising and keeping future giants alive for everyone to be able to enjoy. I know many places that have been destroyed because of this. I keep speckled trout and red drum out of the ocean as well as crappie. But I keep them in very limited numbers. But what if everybody decided to keep three at a time with the mass numbers of fisherman these days? There would be nothing left. It's like saying every hunter in the country can keep their limit of whatever species and goes out and seeks them, except fisherman are in far greater numbers and it's much easier to catch fish than it is to hunt animals in numbers. We have to be responsible stewards of the wilderness, but we must always recognize that half of the people out there are not. Sounds like people like you. People are harvesters and they will take everything they can. Social pressure exists for a reason whether it's in nature or in society. I used to fight against this but now I'm older and I realize the wisdom in it. Perhaps you should as well instead of thinking you are higher than everything in the ecosystem. You are a speck of sand on the planet just like I am, no better than any other and no better than any animal. Unless you are responsible all of our resources will be drained. @@slimbush2909 already sent you one response but I'll give you another example. I split my time between Virginia and the outer Banks. In 2020 the speckled trout population in the outer Banks was ridiculous. We were catching them in droves, both out of the sound and the ocean. 2 years later, the catchable population is down to hardly anything. Old heads show up to the bridge every single day and keep as many as they can and now there's nothing for any of us to catch. It only took a few years to make that happen because of harvesters like yourself I asked them what they did with all of these fish and they had freezers full and then they gave them away to everyone else. Funk everyone else, let them put their damn effort in and catch them themselves. Red drum allotment has been cut to one per day because of people like you. As a result the population has thrived over the last few years. Flounder have been restricted to a two week, two weeks season because of over commercialization and too much harvesting from recreational people. Now none of us can go catch a flounder and take it home to eat. And if you get one in the two weeks, that's not enough to take home and eat for more than one person. This is what happens with your mental attitude and it ruins it for everyone else that do it to eat a few and mostly for the sport. Harvesters in life are manipulators of everyone and they are no good for anyone. They don't care about anyone or anything except themselves. Is that who you want to be in life? If it is then you can kiss all of our asses

I absolutely never target bass to eat, but if I go crappie or white bass or catfishing and a keeper size bass bites my hook and it's just 1, ill keep it cause they truly taste delicious, but I don't sit there and try to limit out and keep em all.

OK… It seems you don't have experience with gators so I'll offer some good ole sound advice… WHENEVER you catch a baby gator, UNHOOK IT AND PUT IT BACK IN THE WATER AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE because that little GLLLK sound is indeed a call to momma and Momma Gators WILL lunge at you and jump right in your boat and then you'll be in some deep stuff!!! You held that thing waaaay to long on your Yak and you were lucky Momma didn't come to save that little guy from you. Mother gators swim slowly and often carry their brood in their mouth, holding it slightly open so they can see and breathe as she shuttles them around. The moooore you knooow! 🌠

Check your States fishing regulations, before you clean fish in a lake or a stream. Not always legal.

I understand why some people don't want to harvest largemouth, but it all depends on the fish population. If the fish population is healthy, it's ok to harvest some fish without it harming the population. In fact, it can help to grow the size of the larger fish. If the bass are stunted, then you absolutely should take some bass out. And if you own a farm pond, you absolutely have to remove some bass every year to prevent overpopulation. So the only way you can maintain a healthy fish population is by removing some bass every year. If you're going to remove the bass, you might as well eat them, unless you have another body of water where the population is on the decline(and you could move them there). Bass are good eating. I'm not sure why people don't seem to think bass is any good. It's every bit as good as any other freshwater fish. Tastes a lot like crappie really. More likely to have a fishy taste, but that depends on the fish and the water. If you can avoid the fishy taste then the meat is indistinguishable from crappie. I often harvest crappie and bass together and I truly can't tell when I'm biting into a crappie nugget or a bass nugget. About one in 5 bass will have that fishy taste though, but it's not an overwhelming fishy taste unless the fish came out of poor quality water.
