Why You Should Fish Jerkbaits for Post Spawn Bass

Bass fisherman hype the use of jerkbaits during the prespawn period, and often shelve them once the spawn begins. As Elite Series pro Dave Lefebre explains, you're missing out on big bass that pull out of the shallows and scatter along secondary points and the first drop of transition banks after the spawn.
These areas are big bass highways leading out to near and offshore haunts. Some bass like a jerkbait fished fast, some slow during this recovery period. A jerkbait give you the ability figure out the bite by making retrieve adjustments on the fly - few lure categories are this versatile.

If get a hit pull the rod straight up and reel. I've noticed if you pull straight away like he did it pulls the bait out of their mouth and you will lose more

does the snap change the balance of the bait when it's suspended?

Allan Hise it does but it's fairly minimal if you use smaller ones. Personally I don't use them in the late winter early spring when I pause a jerkbait for longer periods in cold water or don't want the nose down action. He's fishing post-spawn in this video and fishing it fairly quickly as a search bait. A snap definitely won't hurt you in that scenario.

How long after the transition is it when he fished this. Is it right after the spawn, like a week after of a month?

Hi Chase, this vid was filmed on Sam Rayburn. You'll find bass at various stages of the spawn on huge systems like this. Overall though, we figured we were 2-3 weeks post spawn for the bulk of the bass.

Wired2Fish thanks for the info, I have a high school state tournament at Toledo Bend in a few weeks and they are spawning right now at Toledo and some are post spawn, I’ll definitely try a jerk bait though.
