This is one of the better jerkbait tips videos I've watched so far. He covers the nuances of a jerkbait when fishing in different water temps, and more importantly, different regions. Fishing up in the Northeast/New England area is very different from fishing down southeast in Florida, Georgia, etc.

Missouri Boe, the Megabass Jerkbait Walker is using has won numerous tournaments on Lake of the Ozarks (see Marcus Sykora). It can work in dingy water (if it has noise makers in it). But it's very effective around docks, standing timber, open water and more. It's effective in cold water. But works all through the spring and again in the fall.

another tip, remove the bill of the lure and on some it will run great on the surface depending on the shape of the nose..Lipless JerkBait Paulpro Tip.. My trick works great with the Rebel minnow 3.5", 2.5" and the 1 3/4" for finesse do a youtube search "lipless rebel minnow" plenty vids to learn from. i like this vid a lot but for me i prefer a faster reel for jerk baits because since the actions through the jerk jerk pause......i want to be able to reel up those slacks a lot faster and if i do get a bite u can set the hook more effectively thats just my opinion :) have a nice day now yall

Is there any time of year not to use this bait? And is this bait just as effective in muddier water such as lake of the ozarks and Turman Lake, Missouri?

I feel confident in my cadence and retrieval when using a jerkbait, but identifying a strike is still a little hard for me. Do you look for a jump in the line? Should you feel the thump? What about on a windy day when your line will be swaying in the wind? Thanks!

+uzername1nvalid Yes we look for a line. Jump. When we jerk the line, we reel up most of the slack so there is just small bow in the line. It makes seeing the bite easier. Check out this video too. Does using a snap swivel on your plug or jerk bait effect the motion on the plug?

A snap can actually help action by providing more freedom of movement than a tight knot, but we do prefer trying direct to a split ring or lure so long as it doesn't impede lure action. If you do use a snap, select a small one so it does't take away from lure detail or weight the lure down in the nose unnaturally.

When fishing a jerkbait in dirtier water what do you look for to tell you have a bite ? When I'm fishin them in open water I'll feel a thump but when I start reeling it's wood or stray weeds . I've never had much success with these but I need to learn them asap bc I got a hs tournament on Toledo bend in late January 😬😬

wish i could use those types of baits more frequently..our damn lakes up here in mn are so weedy, you pretty much have to go weedless all the time, texas rig, etc... treble hooks will bring back some heavy veg =(

Aaron W Hey Aaron, Ryan here from Wired2Fish and fellow MN native. I agree with you that it's tough fishing jerkbaits around weeds, and for that reason (and Pike!), I don't use them a lot for largemouth. If you have smallmouth near you though, they're a top three must have, especially during the prespawn, but will catch brown bass anytime during our open water season. New to fishing how do you know when you have a bite on a jerk bait

We almost always detect bites by keeping a semi-tight line (slight bow in it) and watching the line. When it jumps you know one hit it because they almost always hit on the pause. A lot like crappie fishing. It's more about watching your line than feeling it in your hand.

+Ethan Baxter It's a small lake in central Georgia. Lots of highland reservoirs have flooded standing timber and there are major lakes all over the country with flooded timber like that. Table Rock Lake, Clarks Hill, Toledo Bend, Bull Shoals, Lake Lanier, Lake Seminole, etc.

Hayden Glasco it's not necessary to have all three treble hooks, but the more you have on the lure, the greater probability you have on hooking the fish. just as my preference I stick to two treble hooks on anything less that 3 1/2 inches long. tight lines brother

I understand its best to fish a jerk bait in clear water but how clear ? I'm in Oklahoma and don't have many bodies of water that a "clear"

+Cwbysfan 03 Most jerkbaits have rattles, make noise when jerked. So they have drawing power beyond just sight. We catch them in water that might only have a foot or two visibility. But when the water gets colder, then clearer is better. As it warms up, a jerkbait can be a dynamite alternative in dirtier water when everyone else is throwing cranks and other baits.

can't catch bass? mid summer, a couple hours before it rains try a "hula popper" summer bass LOVE top water! pop it once or twice...pause, pop it once or twice....pause. all the way back to shore or the boat. its said to reel in the lure when it gets within 10 feet of where you are, but who knows if that's true. good luck! tight lines!

+lkjyuiop well, the rod should last you a lifetime for that price! a lot of it has to do with technique and if there's one true and universal technique I've learned its to mimic the bait fish/ food the fish you are targeting eat. sporatic movements with jerkbaits, crankbaits you want to try and change up your retrieve every few casts, use surface lures for fish that eat off the surface like bass and trout. brookies, perch and walleye I've found the best thing is to fish off the bottom with worms/ crawlers and small spinners. also don't be afraid to try lures and baits that other guys aren't using. most fish will learn and become aware of what is constantly being thrown their way. best times to fish ANY species is just before and just after sun up and sun down. walleye prefer the darker waters and are "spooky" fish. always assume the fish can see you also, if you can see your shadow in the water so can the fish! hope this helps some, tight lines!
