And if you don't want the texture, apply a thin coat of gesso, sand, another thin coat and sand. You can also colour it with paint, if you want to get rid of the white in one go.

I've tried that but found I got it smoother by just using a squeegee thing. I only sand at the end to get rid of any stray lumps and bumps. After about 6 or 7 coats (on ready-stretched preprimed canvas) I have a surface like paper and I can draw on it with a nib pen. And do!

@@ZadenZane does the gesso crack? I've seen some people remove the cloth from a canvas frame, and I also want to start painting on canvas cloths to save space. And only frame them when they sell. So I'm wondering if you roll the cloth, or don't keep it stretched on a frame, will the gesso underneath crack, or is it flexible & movable like acrylic paints?

Can we use reg house paint, or acrylic paint, instead of gesso?
@That1HippieChickКүн бұрын
Yes, you can use whatever paint you’re going to use as a priming base on any naked canvas or paper. Gesso is generally less expensive so we’re not using our expensive paint to prime the canvas as it can take a few layers to stop absorbing into the canvas. If you’re going to paint with house paint for a base it’s best to continue to use house paints for your painting. If you prime with gesso or acrylic paint, you can paint with acrylic, vinyl or oil paint over the acrylic. However, most canvases that you buy at the store these days are already primed with gesso when you buy them, that’s why they’re white and usually rough feeling 😉. If they’re already primed you do not need to apply gesso or prime them again unless you want a different texture (smoother/rougher) 😊✌️🎨

The first stretched (and supposedly 3x primed!) canvas had something wrong with it. I tried to paint the whole thing silver and even after 10 coats it looked patchy because it hadn't been primed properly. So right from the start I have been gessoing my own canvas. I put on 2 thick coats with a brush then another 4 or more using a squeegee to get a surface smooth as paper. I don't bother standing except round the edges and I only use fine grain sandpaper. My first attempt with rough sandpaper literally sanded straight through the canvas on the top edge. Not good!

Gesso is more absorbent than paint, which helps the paint adhere better to the surface. Gesso is also more flexible than paint, which helps prevent cracking or peeling of the paint over time. Gesso provides a more even base for the paint, which can help create a smoother and more consistent final painting. Gesso is also more opaque than paint, which can help create a brighter and more vibrant final painting. Gesso is also more economical than paint. It's worth noting that gesso is not recommended for use on surfaces that are not porous, such as metal or plastic.

Can I use unused paints as gesso or do I have to buy something that says gesso on it?
@MozzafiatoArt Жыл бұрын
It's a preference but I think gesso has a chalk binder to keep the canvas smooth. Some people like the texture of the canvas so it really depends on what you are looking for. Personally I would go with a product that says gesso on it.

Do you leave yours to dry as textured with visible brushstrokes as that last shot? I don’t know if the DIY gesso I’ve made since I started acrylic painting would hold structure well enough to dry with such defined marks (maybe if I made it thicker, but my goal has always been to mix it to a pancake battery consistency & apply thin enough layers that I could get it on perfectly flat [I’ve always just used molding paste or other textured media for texture, but this intrigues me, & I know I’ve seen at least a couple other artists’ tutorials where they used gesso for these purposes]). I’ll have to give this a try! It might be an easier & cheaper way to prime my canvas & achieve the kinds of textures I love seeing in abstract paintings all at once.
