Having not taken sport seriously since my schooldays (and I didn't take it that seriously then) I took up jogging in November 2016, aged 64. I'm 70 in February 2022, and am now running faster than when I was a schoolboy. As well as getting a tremendous kick out of parkruns, I have run in various events, including two half-marathons and two marathons. One big frustration though: can't get my 10k time under 50-minutes! This year is the year.

Wow, doing less than 50 minutes on a 10K requires speed. I fear you’ll need to add some interval training in your weekly plan to get there. I got my PB last Dec 31st of 46:00 but I’m younger 😀 . I wish at 70 I can still run 10 K in less than 60 minutes 😃 .
@mknh2466

Actually I'd say it requires more endurance than speed really. Being 70 I'd suggest being cautious with interval training, especially if you're prone to injuries. It's a delicate balance. A decent aerobic base should set the foundation topped with just the right amount and type of interval training.

I have Borderline Personally Disorder and a form of anxiety. I thought I could never exercise in a group or get fitter but I knew that I had to as my health was getting poor. It took two years to do it but I worked up the courage to join a beginners course with my local club. I was terrified and convinced I'd make a fool of myself. I found my passion, and now have friends who make me laugh and we all enjoy a good run, usually bitching about the distance / weather / shoes etc. I'm truly happy when I do it, my anxiety decreased and so I've helped out at every beginners course since joining the club, something I didn't even think I was capable of, I got better at work and consequently got a promotion at work, my concentration improved. This list goes on. If you're nervous about starting (i) yes, you will look like a tit but (ii) no one who is a non runner notices and (iii) everyone who is a runner doesn't care! Go for it - it will be the best decision you ever make

As being overweight during my 20s, I always admired runners who could run miles and miles without colapse. Last few years, I started to do boxing sessions and weight lift. Not overweight anymore but I still always want to "fly" like that. Chance came when my bff started to run 3km daily since June. It inspired me. The next thing I know, I could run 12km on my Sunday long run. My next goal is half marathon. Tks so much for many information your channel provided me during my journey.

I started running in the middle of last year and did my first 5k! It helped with my mental tiredness and in that sense give me more emotional energy. It's like another form of meditation for me, just keeping the feet going and letting whatever thoughts pop up pass by. I'm keeping my eye out for more 5ks to do! Thanks for your videos, they've helped me along and made me want to go at it.

Fully admit to being a bit of a perfectionist and was generally unhappy and unsatisfied for decades. Running has helped me to accept that every effort is not going to proceed as I hoped and to see things as a long term plan. The mental clarity I get during my runs is excellent as well as the improved stress management. Now if I could just this IT band to calm down!..

I'm making my rehab plans as I hope to have my back surgery soon. After that I can start to get back to running. I'm a bit annoyed to start rebuilding my fitness but I'm just thinking that I'll just rebuil better. Focusing on muscle strenght first, then slowly upping walking/biking for cardio. Then finally when physio gives permission to start running starting with walk-run method. I'm not gonna risk re-injuring my back. I'm utterly bored not being able to run.

Looking forward to running again this year but I already missed one training run :( Going to have my goal to do a 100 mile run before the end of the year. My last attempt I made it to 100km's before my right knee stuffed up too bad that I couldn't keep going even though mental mindset was the best I've ever had. Going out the door now for a 9 Mile run to get things started after a month off for recovery. You really do make lifelong friends though. Hello Chris Gallivan if you're reading this. :D

HNY! My strange impetus for starting to run in early 2021 was simply because I felt so great after switching to minimalist barefoot shoes. I know it sounds all hippydippy to say, but after I "rewilded" & strengthened my feet to be in a more natural state, my balance improved, my back pain disappeared, and I actually look forward to feeling the ground on every walk & run rather than being insulated from it by too much cushion. Got an 18mile longrun tomorrow morning in prep for my 1st solo marathon in about month (5 laps around Central Park's lower loop (5.14mi) + 0.5miles farther). Just hoping that it doesn't snow... :)

If you want a no-stress run, look for your local Hash House Harriers. While I don't know about the live longer comment, I will agree with the sense of accomplishment as a >100Kg heavyweight finishing a marathon in 5:45 will give you is awesome. The rest of the video for me is 100% accurate. If you are looking for marathons away from your country, the best I have found is in Japan. I've run Swiss, US, Greek, and Turkish races but Himeji is the best for crowd and organized support. Next for Sarah is the SwissAlps 100 or jumping to UTMB?

I know WHY I should get into running. My question is WHERE to run? I do not want to run on sidewalks/streets/neighborhoods due to safety issues. The roads in my complex are uneven. I have started looking for tracks at local high schools but they aren't always accessible and aren't cleared from snow. The closest park is about 10 minutes away. Due to my current weight, I am concerned about making it around the whole park.

The point about not exercising so close to bedtime is one reason why I switched to morning training. I only run in the PM if I have a race or am doubling, and always try to be done just after 4:30. What was the study that said you should not exercise less than 3 hours before bedtime?

All great points. The only one that I raised an eyebrow at was the first one. I go through four pairs of running shoes a year at £90 a pair, plus medical certificate, clothing, race entry fees etc. and occasional visits to the physio. Running has been far from free for me, however it still costs a lot less than many other sports or hobbies.
@mountaingoat3012
@mountaingoat3012 2 жыл бұрын
4 pairs a year means you are doing 1600-2400 miles per year which is hardcore running. Not everyone will be racing or using a physio so can save cash there. What is a medical certificate required for? Racing?
@stuartthurstan
@stuartthurstan 2 жыл бұрын
@@mountaingoat3012 Medical cert is indeed required for light athletics certification & racing with FIDAL (I'm in Italy). I'm not saying running can't be cheap, just saying it hasn't been for me. I only started 4 years ago, but it's very addictive and as you noted, I now run over 2000km a year. :)
