This is absolutely CORRECT. I record everything in MONO, mix it in MONO, final step, select your stereo field. FINAL step. PERIOD. You will save a TON of time, use far fewer plugins, etc. AND you will have far better mixes and masters. p.s., Your final mix SHOULD be your master. That's well over 60 years of recording experience talkin', youngsters. Bill P.

how would I switch to stereo as soon as a mixed in mono
@n0limitmk9 ай бұрын
Im in FL BTW
@RocknRollkat9 ай бұрын
@@n0limitmk It's very simple. In your DAW, you've mixed to mono, now save that mix as your mono mix file. Now go back into the mono mix and set your panorama ('pan' pots) to achieve the stereo field that you like. Save that mix as your stereo mix file. Bonus --- You can create as many different mixes (mono or stereo) as you like, just label 'em correctly when you save 'em. Now you can 'call up' different mixes for your client to choose from. Let me know what you think, Bill P. 😀

Instead of using an EQ to carve out the freq, use a sidechain tool like trackspacer to pull out the appropriate freqs while in mono. Much cleaner results.

Thumbs up and I haven't even watched it. Edit: Mixing in mono is something I only started doing this year and it's changed so much. I used to have songs that sounded good in stereo and I'd play it on a Google Home speaker, and it would all fall apart. Mixing in mono has fixed that.

The concept makes good sense, however, making space for my vocals in terms of frequency slotting is pretty much the first thing my music teacher recommended when I started with audio production, so I do this kind of by default. So far, I only mix my own songs, so it is always my own voice that I am dealing with and it starts getting familiar to mix it, so usually, I make an EQ for my vocal that brings out the nice side of a given song (I am fortunate to have a semblance of a range, so it won't always be the same frequencies), and then I make a copy of that EQ which is like a mirror image, wherever I have boosted my vocal, the mirror EQ will have some cuts so that I can slap that EQ onto the instruments. And then have a listen to see if I like it or not of course. Still, I like the idea of listening to the entire mix in mono to spot for problems, and I will try it out for sure. Who knows what other interesting things I might find out that way ;-)

Hey Devvon, I've been watching your videos for some time now searching for tips and tricks. And I've must say you've helped me along for the road. I plan on doing mixing and mastering as a full time job in a few years, I'm currently 21 and I'm hoping I can do it full time by the time I'm 25. Recently whenever I bring friends and local artists to record I can't seem to mix them well. I don't know if its just the recording or I'm doing something wrong with my mix. I've been using waves for some time now and I like the plugins but after using them for a while it's like I can't manage to do a correct mix since I'm always comparing them to studio grade readio ready songs. We do all our recordings in a bedroom studio with barely to none acoustic treatment. Do you have any tips for when your mixes start to sound bad compared to earlier tracks?

@Help Me Devon If your routing a vocal track through a bus to a vocal chain (vocal processing ) should your sends ( reverb , delay , parallel compression, etc. ) be on that vocal track or the vocal chain track ? or does it matter?
@IOG2K4 жыл бұрын
'Sends' to other FX buses/auxes, are mostly put on the main vocal chain aux/bus, just after your main vocal plugins, and then you can use the the main levelling slider on the sends to impact how much of each effect you want on the vocal...
@decarlosmith62644 жыл бұрын
@@IOG2K thank you makes sense ! so , put them on the main vocal CHAIN ? what is the processing of the sends air they are placed on the Vocal TRACK which then is routed to the VOCAL CHAIN ?
@IOG2K4 жыл бұрын
DeCarlo Smith No, nothing is put on the dry tracks, unless you recording on a tracking chain (to make it sound good in the moment before actually mixing it) but you want main mixing plugins e.g. compression, deeser and EQ all on your main Vocal bus/aux, which on the same bus/aux has sends to your other FX buses/auxes e.g. verb, delay, p comp etc.
@decarlosmith62644 жыл бұрын
@@IOG2K ok cool gotcha , thank you ! well what does adding plugins or sends on the vocal track do when I'm routing that whole signal to a vocal chain ???? like are the plugins on my vocal track in effect when it hits the vocal chain ?? so basically some processing before my main processing , right ?
@IOG2K4 жыл бұрын
DeCarlo Smith Yeah, so if you put any processing on your dry vocal recording track, and then route it to a bus that has more processing then it’s just more layers of processing really....
