Today we are discussing the old, but iconic Gerber Survival Knife. The Gerber LMF-II. Designed as an aircrew survival blade is it really worthy of wilderness survival practices? I don't think so and here is why!

You seem to have quite the bias with gerber and not very good arguments against them other than your bias towards other knives (which is totally fine but isnt an argument). Gerbers 420hc outperforms Kabar 1095 (see JOE Xs channel as well as mayor fuglycool; mayor did both the garberg and the strongarm and the garberg broke, the strong arm didn’t). I back pack in the Appalachian and Gerbers are almost all I take (outside of moras). With that said, comparing a mora to a gerber is like comparing an apple to an orange. Gerber designs their tools to fit military specifications and there have been several videos showing it can outlast a garberg to abuse if a real survival situation presents itself (like in the sandpits of Afghanistan). The reason the LMF2 is not full tang is so there is a disconnect from the blade and pommel for cutting through live wire. An LMF2 is even in a military museum in the mid west because it helped a few of our soldiers cut the lights to a facility they needed to recon in after the enemy caught wind of them. These are purposes driven tools, and you expect them to do things they aren’t designed to do. A scandi grind and a saber grind will preform very differently. Its all about preference my guy. Cheers!

It’s a little like taking a butcher knife and saying it makes a terrible scalpel. This knife can do things other knives can’t and most will never take a knife beyond the limits of this knife. To say it is the worst survival knife is a sign of someone who is trying to pass themselves off as a KZbin expert but is really a guy who makes videos.

Its not even debatable. For a civilian this knife doesnt make any sense and you can do so much better for your money. We dont go around cutting live wire and airplane fuselage so whatever all that stuff is about just disregard it. If you are deployed in some middle eastern shithole its a different story. You dont give a shit about chipped or rolled edges, chipped plastic or worn down rubber then. You are concerned about critical failure and keeping a servicable edge on the knife and of course weight. If it wasnt for the militaria fanboys this wouldnt even be on the civilian market because it doesnt belong here. In short I agree with the video though. This knife is a cheaply made knife of pretty terrible quality.

He does hate on the strongarm a little too hard, but generally speaking, gerbers are 💩. I’ve had two gerbers that I actually like… the strongarm and the freeman guide… great knives. But generally gerber is rubbish. Their ergonomics aren’t that great (look at the profile of this thing) and overall, they look like cheap Canadian tire blades. I split the pommel on my BG Ultimate and I wasn’t even abusing it that hard. The only thing that pommel is good for hammering is garlic. They ruin potentially good knives with serrations. And like this one, a lot of their more prominent blades don’t have a good tang on them (or even a full one). Their sheaths are atrocious too. No sane person in todays day and age would say “and it comes with a great sheath” about any gerber aside from the fantastic one they made for the strongarm. IMO gerber has made 2 good knives that any collector should consider buying. In the case of the lmf, Alaskan frontier is totally right.

Carried and used mine for ten years (Iraq, Afghanistan, Central America, Asia, Canada, Europe)in the army (reconnaissance)and it was a great knife for a soldier. What civilians playing in the woods don’t seem to realise is that we don’t baton wood or cut down trees and dance around giant fires which brings attention to our presence. We call it sign. If you’re not on hard routine where you’re eating your rations cold you dig a hole and burn one fuel block at a time to minimise light. If your romantically living of the land like the movies then you’re probably behind enemy lines and trying to evade the enemy, it’s a few twigs to cook with (if you absolutely have to) again to minimise light then move off. If you’re going to review a knife use it for what it is designed for. Use the pommel to break plexiglass, cut through aircraft skin, cut live cable, cut open ration bags, open ammunition tins etc blunt it fairly easily then marvel how easily it sharpens even by a soldier who doesn’t know how to sharpen super steel with an incredibly expensive sharpening system yet those obnoxious drag through sharpers will get a working edge back and no one cares if it is a mirror edge, just crack on using it.

Well being prior military I can honestly say I have not only used these but seen them in action. I have seen fuselage cut away , bulkhead windscreen broken through using the glass breaker. This knife was designed with the military in mind. It will pry, dig and even work in a struggle with a combatant. Civilians do not care for serrations. But they have a place in military daily tasks. You are the second person I have seen on KZbin break the cross guard while batoning. This baffles me because I have done a tremendous amount of batoning with not one issue? The other channel was striking the handle side of the log with his baton. You really are not suppose to strike that side. The sheath or scabbard as some insist on calling it is very well thought out. Sorry you had all these issues with yours. Funny thing is many have beaten the heck out of the LMF's and they held up very well including the edge. The only thing I have had an issue with on both the one that I own and the one I was issued is the rubber overlay grip. I have had them bubble and even completely separate from the handle . Gerbers lifetime warranty service is pretty darn good. Takes a few weeks to get a replacement but they do stand behind their products. There are enough knives designed for civilians . Funny how many people purchase a knife intended for certain combat situations rather than just purchase the right knife designed with civilians in mind.

I get all the hate, but I don't think people really understand the purpose and intent of the design. I've heard of a sniper team cutting a live generator wire, saving their lives. My friend's a helicopter crewmember in a Spec Ops unit who swears by this knife. I get "survivalists" hating on this knife, but sometimes ppl don't understand that military personnel's definition of survival is different than theirs. It's not the best bushcraft/field craft knife out there, but I wouldn't dismiss it and label it as "the worst." I think that's a little too extreme.

I think the problem you had here is not realizing this knifes intended use. The LMF 2 is NOT a bushcraft knife. It is an egress tool for downed pilots. It is not meant for batoning and if you hit the handle while batoning, I am not sure you are batoning correctly anyway. Think about it…why would a bush rafter need electrical insulation in the handle? Why would a bushcraft knife be offered only in a partially serrated blade? Why would the pommel have a glass breaker on a bushcraft knife? Are you starting to get it yet? If I wanted to go into the wilderness with nothing but a knife to beat on, I would take by full tang Esee 6. That knife is a beast. This knife will do for outdoor survival in a pinch, but it is more of a fixed blades version of a Swiss army urban survival knife than a pure outdoor bushcrafter blade. Calling a blade bad because you don’t understand it’s philosophy of use is on you, not the blade!

Mate you have failed to understand what this knife was designed for. It is so aircrew have a bloody big blunt tool to smash out through perspex. It is designed to military design specs to remain in the scabbard within certain 'G' loadings, cut and smash your way through aluminium fuselage....it is not designed for boutique hikers. In some way he is right, but the LMF II ins not a survival knife. It is made for pilots to cut a seat belt, electric wire or alloy skin of airplanes or helicooters. It is not made for batoning.m, because of the electric insulation of the grip. The sheath is too tight so the rubber rips of the grip. But I like it for urban survival...

You are wrong in your assumption at 04:10 - 04:45, there's no risk of shock, the tang of the blade and the pommel are not attached to each other inside the grip. There's no electrical conduction/continuity between them, they are separate parts. (Which might or might not explain the broken handle, since the handle continues past the tang and creates potential extra leverage where the plastic bears the force.) To quote the Gerber website: "The knife has a purposeful break between the tang and the butt cap, providing insulated protection against stray wires and absorbing any shock from hammering." In contrast to your review I'm very happy with mine and it's taken a lot of abuse/beatings (but through regular use, not as stress test), and I bought mine after seeing several videos where they abused it to hell and back (well, some of those were the LMF 2 and others showed the predecessor LMF ASEK). Did your handle crack during batoning or something else? My only real gripe with the construction is the poor resilience of the blade surface treatment since it comes off with friction like you experienced too, but I haven't had any corrosion/rust as a result so it's more an aesthetic thing.
@bluegrasssurvival9423
@bluegrasssurvival9423 Жыл бұрын
Question: Did you hit the rubber handle guard with your baton stick? I have seen the plastic housing break before and that's usually how. The Gerber LMF II is quite specific in it's design and function. It really wasn't made for your use, but it can do it if you don't beat the handle.

Knowing next to nothing about knives I decided to research a "best" survival knife to buy. This was 10 years ago and since I have become well educated. This LMFII was the best overall knife for survival that I found, except too heavy. I have really enjoyed it...bit bulky but I found the weight to be useful in some situations that smaller knives would struggle. Some of his concerns are genuine, based on my own experience but a bit exaggerated. The lack of a full tang is still my own concern as well but not a deal breaker. Th knife is not the strongest metal but the width of blade more than makes up. My biggest concern is I have found the knife to be very difficult to sharpen. Overall if you want a big strong survival knife then this is it. Buy a quality portable knife sharpener. It's a BEAST!!!

Good video man!👍 I’ve got a strongarm. I love it. I got it for a medium knife. My large knife is a British Army MoD Survival knife, or a Condor Hudson Bay, strongarm, than a Mora Companion HD. Batoning is something I used to do, but later after watching a video by The School of Self reliance, called ‘Batoning is stupid, I’ll show you why’ (or something along those lines) after watching that I quit batoning. Even with a 1/4in+ thick spine knife like my MoD knife. It puts so much stress on the knife man. I carry a silky saw Arborus, and a Council Tool saddle axe. But that’s me man. Keep up the good work!👍

Why would you baton a serrated knife?
@fisheyeguy
@fisheyeguy Жыл бұрын
Your LMF II’s handle broke and the blade dinged because you obviously have terrible batoning practices. There is absolutely NO REASON that you should be batoning anywhere near the handle of a knife with a < 4.5” blade. It’s not the fault of the knife, it’s user error. And the sharpener is added as a last resort if you are stuck in a situation where you have no sharpener at all. It’s meant to sharpen the knife in a pinch. That’s why it’s a simple carbide v-sharpener. Your bias and hatred for Gerber would be pretty funny and entertaining if it wasn’t based on such poor information and techniques.

@@AlaskanFrontier1 you’re one of these guys that can’t take any sort of critique aren’t you? It should be blatantly obvious by the overwhelming majority responses to your video that are like mine, that you are wrong in your assessment of the knife. I would like to know, in what situation would you need to baton your knife, close to the handle? You don’t. That’s poor technique.

I never understood why Gerber was so popular, I've always thought they were junk. I knew several fellow pilots who bought these when I was in the Army. I wasn't impressed with them at all. I stuck with the issued ASIK on my flight vest which was just as capable, and had an ESEE 5 in my E&E bag. You should totally do a destruction video with that POS!!! See just how much abuse it can take before it completely breaks!

While I don’t agree that the LMF is a bad knife, I appreciate your perspective and opinion. It may not be a knife you would recommend and there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s why differences of opinions add value because it offers different perspectives and points of view to consider. It doesn’t mean we all have to agree, but we can certainly always choose to remain civil. I’ve owned and used Gerber knives in specific applications and they’ve worked well. I have had hit and miss knives due to quality control issues with uneven blade grinds, but they’ve always stood behind their products. Anyway, love it or hate it, no problem. Holding a different opinion is what adds value, not subtract from it. Thanks for the content you share and I’ve enjoyed watching your videos. Keep up the good work! 👍

Lol same steel, but bigger, heavier blade on the LMF- some how the prodigy is better? Idk, but it seems like for some reason you didn’t want to like this knife. It’s actually a decent knife, not my favorite- but not worth telling anyone to “run” away from a possible purchase.

I feel your blaming the knife for your batoning skills (or lack thereof). Maybe there was dirt on the wood you were batoning in relation to the edge damage? Struck at an angle? Also the pommel is electrically insulated. Something here sucks so bad but it’s not the lmf

Unfortunately the base stores carry inferior steel from sub-par companies and soldiers will buy them if for nothing else other than pure convenience. But one must ask themselves, how much if your life worth? Are you going to put your life in the hands of a 30-45 dollar Chinese made knife?

I closed the door on Gerber a long time ago, and no matter what they make, even if it's a usa made fixed blade with cpms45vn, I still won't give them a second chance. Absolute garbage of a company. Lionsteel, extrema ratio, and viper knives are three companies I frequent. Amazing blades from excellent companies

This thing is a one tool option for soldiers who need to get as much functionality as they can into as little weight as possible. This thing takes the role of an axe, saw, large knife and small knife. Soldiers will use this with a small folding knife and a multitool and that's all they'll carry. For that, it works really well.
