I do love the performance of the Germans but for something that gets me from A to B safely and reliably every day, I can deal without the luxury. European cars are great if you are leasing them, but my 2011 BMW 335d with 114k miles had an angel eye out. apparently replacing it cascaded into frying the floorboard lighting module. .. cost to fix the module $900 which is known to fail. Also bluetooth in my car just died. Cost to just replace the bluetooth module $1500. BMW makes cool things but they really need to focus on serviceability and reliability. Book labor hours to replace a turbo on my car is around 20, ranging from around $175 to $230 an hour. The company has really lost it's way. So I'm back 10 months later after my purchase of a new 2023 Highlander limited. I will confess the 4 cyl turbo engine is a bit underwhelming but gets the job done. I also experienced the dreaded non linear acceleration defect, but a recall with new ECM program has seemingly fixed the issue entirely. I will continue to religiously change the oil every 3k to 4k miles and feel confident this vehicle will stand the test of time. We've put about 1k miles/month on the vehicle, so it's at about 10k miles now.

Time for a reality check. I own a 2021 Highlander Platinum trim and it is a great car to have. Your complaints are somewhat misguided. 1st - I disagree with your statement about the price. Yes it is a high price car but the car retains the value for WAY longer than ANY luxury car does. Do you homework cause I think you don’t know this. So if I lease this vehicle the price of this vehicle will depreciate very little compare to most luxury vehicles. I agree with the app and the 3rd row being the biggest draw back but most luxury companies don’t even have these features for free either - you have to pay either way. At the current rate of interest rates there are very little cars that are a good idea to lease. 2 years ago there were good options right now I would not buy or lease any car even if its a Toyota that will hardly depreciate and that’s where you will need to correct because Toyotas don’t die but your luxury cars do.

Yes the highlander is expensive, and yes you it is approaching some of the German options, but how is it regarding total cost of ownership. I’d be willing to venture TCO is far less than its German rivals, and this is why people chose the Toyota (and Lexus) over a Benz or Audi. Second, I personally think leasing a car is a horrible idea. Leases are structured to benefit the dealer. Not only do they get the high monthly payment, you are limited on the miles that you can drive. Then at the end of the lease, they turn around and sell what is a low mileage car as a CPO and make even more money. I’d opt for the purchase of a CPO and pay cash if you are able to. You’ll come out ahead as opposed to the lease.

I think you are wrong about the lease payments. Yes, for the similar amount of money for a really good spec Highlander you can get a new GLC or X3 or Q5 - however BMW and Audi are pretty bad in terms of reliability and engine issues. MB is still holding good in this but the lease payments are a lot more than Highlander. I am Mercedes guy, I was only driving MBs for a very long time, after we moved to Canada we got a brand new Toyota Rav4, before that we used to have W177 A Class which was really nice car. Toyota kease payments are not too bad and I think looking at the lease payments from premium brands are pretty high and when you want to own the car you will pay a lot more at the end of the lease than you would just finance it. The more the expensive the car is the more money you will throw at the end to own it. If you want to own the more premium czr from brand new the better option is to finance, lease is only as good as you will switch the cars after few years.

We have a 2015 XLE that has had zero major mechanical issues. There was a minor squeak of the driver side window the last inch or so going up that finally resolved itself over time. The vehicle has 78,000 miles and other than the lousy OEM tires that had to be replaced at 36,000 miles, no mechanical problems. Brakes are original and show about 50% left. Get a German car if you don't keep your vehicle more than 4-5 years also if you like to throw money away. My 2015 Highlander with 180000 km had the water pump replaced at 150000. That is it. Nothing but oil changes every 8000 km. I love it.

I’ve had my 2016 Toyota Highlander XLE and I’ve had ZERO problems with it. You talk about price ? You pay for what you get and I got a reliable Vehicle I can count on and the parts are easy to get and not that expensive to buy either VS you’re BMW, Audi and whatever other cars you mentioned PLUS none of them are reliable as a Toyota and I’ve had a few. I like being the average everyday person with an everyday average reliable Vehicle.

Highlanders have higher resale value than bmw and Mercedes, so you will pay more upfront but will lose less in depreciation when it comes time to sell imo

The Audi, BMW or Mercedes isn’t half the car that a Lexus is. Their well financed owners actually brag about their cars being well cared for at the Dealership. Also, check out the depreciation rate for those 4 brands.

07 Highlander with a quarter million miles and I would not trade it for a 0 mile German or American anything. No check engine light no vibrations and no body damage. There is no better car than a Highlander and the AWD is unstoppable. This guy is not a car guy, he is a German car salesman.

Toyota Highlanders are known for lasting up to 400,000 miles. They last. cost but you are buying something that will last and more import DEPENDABLE. I feel you however no car is perfect, No competition when it comes to dependability. 1st Highlander was a 2008 Hybrid Limited. It had 129,000 miles 2nd just bought a 2020 Highlander that has 10,000 miles on it just regular eng. I would recommend a Highlander for hauling nick nack stuff and for family, comfortable for 4 passengers, 3rd the seat should only be for kids.

Own a 2016 and I can agree with you on back seat room. Now the door handle only seems to have those issues if if it was locked in the last few mins. The value of highlander needs to be a plus If you are buying a vehicle and it holds it's value that is a good thing.

One more comment about my Highlanders vs an Audi. I've owned 19 new cars over my lifetime and several used ones when I was young. None of my cars ever broke down and left me stranded until I purchased a brand new 2009 Audi A4. In the two years I owned it, I had to have it towed twice. Once I had it towed to a local garage from 80 miles away when it broke down. I'd never have another Audi.
