Why you should never pour grease down the drain

It can be easy to just wash out your pan and whatever grease is left on it right after cooking, but you could be doing real damage to your pipes and the public sewer system when you do. Here's what you need to know. The following is a transcript of the video:
Bacon grease isn't just bad for you, it's bad for your pipes too. Grease can build up in your pipes. It can clog the pipes and be difficult to remove.
But the situation gets worse when the grease hits the sewers where it combines with everyone else's fats and greases. The fats in the grease get broken down over time. They become fatty acids and glycerol. The fatty acids bind with calcium in the sewers creating a soap-like compound.
These fat globs can cling to high-rising sewers. They're sometimes called "fatbergs." These fatberg clogs can get really big. A 17-ton fatberg was once found in a British sewer. The clogs block the sewer, causing backups. They can be removed by power washing the sewers, but that can take weeks.
If you have leftover fat, don't dump it down the drain. Let it solidify and throw it in the trash. Soak up what's left in the pan with a paper towel. If you do get any down your drain, it's easy to remove. Just pour down a mixture of boiling water, vinegar, and baking soda. But, the less grease you let go down the drain, the better chances of sewer waste never coming out of your faucet.

Sewer waste will never come out of your faucets. Experienced plumber talking here. Most city sewer mains and waste water treatment plants can easily handle grease. Unless you live in Nigeria, you should run lots of hot water down the drain with the grease to get it out of your pipes in your house. City mains are huge and unless the entire city dumps a gallon of grease at once in the winter... there should never be a problem. The 17 ton grease shown previously was likely due to old improperly maintained city waste water mains. Hoard your grease if you like, and send it to the dump if you like, but really... its ok to go down the drain too.

Yes really. Hot water. No problems. Rinse anything that is not water down the drain properly. Toothpaste, etc same thing. Hot water, not for a long time, enough time for hot water to run from the sink to outside your house ( quicker than you think )

if sewer water is coming out of your faucet then you have some type of cross connection. You need a backflow preventer!

@gordonbooth5354
@gordonbooth5354 7 жыл бұрын
I mentioned cross connections during the week and was howled down, seems like some plumbers haven't heard of backflow prevention. Also woohunter is right about an rpzd. I duuno about you people but in Australia people are selling a new type of toilet seat which acts as a bidet, similar to the ones the Japanese use on their toilets. In my home state it's illegal for plumbers to install them but people still buy them and install themselves. The reason for this as stated by the authority is; the spray nozzle of the seat must be 1" or 25mm above the overflow level of the toilet pan, so as to make an air gap that the water cannot breach. All of this a hypothetical exercise as the nozzle would have to jam beneath the overflow level, the toilet would need to block and the water main at lower level would have to burst or be cut and create a syphon which could then draw sewerage back into the water supply. Muslims are fond of this seat because of their prayers 5 times a day and must wash their freckle afterwards, I kid you not. Most backflow prevention is a what if situation but authorities must cover their own backsides because of litigation.

Do not throw your bacon grease away. I filter mine using a fine mesh strainer and keep it in my fridge for use. I use it just like I would butter but for foods I want to add a bit of smoky bacon flavor like when frying up onions to make chili. I've even heard you can use it as a substitute for lard in pie crusts to get a savory crust! Our ancestors used all of the animal and when used sparingly it can be just as fine as using butter to cook. Vegetable oils are often created by using chemicals (try to buy cold pressed oils to avoid this) and oils like olive oil have low smoking points which can create carcinogens in your food.

Yeah but you still got to wait for them to clean out the pipes and until then you can't use your sink and pobably your shower and other faucets. If you didn't hear the video cleaning those messes would take weeks, so you're saying you would be okay to have you and others without water for an extended period of time? I'd hate to be your neighbor.
