As a Canadian traveller, I have always believed in making my own opinion about other countries and avoid basing my perceptions on others' experiences. I won't deny that I really really wanted to visit North Korea, but like you said, what I'll see is definitely not going to be the true north korea. So I will heed to your words and avoid north Korea until I die or they bring democracy. Cheers brother!

To be honest. There are a lot of countries with bad governments around the world. Just to name a few: Saudia Arabia, China, Maldives etc. So where draw the line. I went to NK last year and I don't regret it a bit. Tourists outside of Chinese make up only about 3k. That's nothing. The gov can and will survive without us no problem. It's also much more relaxing than everyone makes you believe, just behave like a decent human beeing and you're just fine. In terms of staging. Obviously they will bring you to the nicer/ more interesting places. But if you like to see more unplugged version of NK you can book your own tourguide and driver and be more independent in your travel. Tours with a large amount of people will always be more curated and with less room for individuals. I might even go back for the Massgames and when the Rongyang Hotel finally opens.

I am from South Korea. This is so weird because I met a person who was really into North Korea couple of days ago and then I found this video. Honestly, I felt so annoyed and at the same time so sad to hear some foreigners who just visited only one time in NK and believe what they saw in there is everything of NK. Please try to think that people in NK are dying in poverty and escaping from that hell ready to lose their life even at this moment and even when you are having FAKE fun designed by NK government there. Visiting NK means that you are supporting NK government to maintain their brutality and ignoring the voice of NK people.

As a South Korean, two years later, I was honestly surprised to see your video. Many people just enjoyed their trip without thinking deeply about what it actually meant to travel to the country they wanted to go. You may only think that (of course, this does not insult tourists traveling to numerous countries), but your thoughts and words in this video gave me a chance to think anew about the meaning of tourism that even I had forgotten. You don't have to live in guilt. At that time, you were just one of the tourists, and now that you feel a change of thought differently from then, it would be safe to say that you have grown one step further. A short trip to North Korea seems to have changed your mind a lot. As a person living in a divided country, I also express a lot of sympathy for your thoughts. I want those people born in North Korea and living without the freedom to feel free someday and know that all humans are equal.

Speaking of which, do you know the hidden truth that North Korea is targeted by Trump and USA because his country possess the second largest deposits of 'Rare Earth Metals' in the world. They are found largely in places like China & N. Korea. Remember 15 years ago, it was Iraq, and Saddam, and WMD (weapon of mass destruction). The real motive was Oil. Today, it is North Korea, and Kim, and nuclear weapon. The real motive is Rare Earth Minerals. It's all come down to the West's dependency on China's Rare Earth Minerals. "Those Who Do Not Learn History Are Doomed To Repeat It". Remember, Germany in pre-World War II era, was imposed upon with numerous and heavy war reparations, tariffs and sanctions by Western Colonial Powers for over a quarter century; eventually when that nation sank into mega depression, which made way for World War II, as Germany struck back. Similar scenario ran in Japan, when that nation too was bullied by maritime sanction; essentially blocking the whole island through naval blockage by Anglo empire naval ships for so long until Japan ran out of (imported) oil, and struck back at Pearl Harbor naval base whose naval ships participated in this year-long sanction. And sure enough that same thing, similar scenario repeating in DPRK/North Korea as the people of that nation has suffered long enough, well over a quarter century of never ending sanction after sanction after sanction by thy Western bullies, resulting over a million innocent people already perished due to starvation and famine. Thank you for this honest video. My mother was from North Korea. She passed away without having visited, although her heart yearned to and she had the opportunity. But her reluctance was based on her genuine fear of apprehension due to her father's escape just after WWII and subsequent hunt for him by NK and their agents before the outbreak of the Korean War. She worked for the US government and had evidence of their incredible espionage reach (a story for another time). I encouraged her to go with me but she always refused and after watching this video I'm glad we didn't. You have convinced me to never visit NK. Thank you for your testimony. God bless you.

@@bunny-tr4fs Just about every citizen in North Korea is obligated to serve in the military man or woman. They do drills everyday as well as other work. They don't really have nutritious meals and protein. Mostly rice and other things. As for us back in the west we have many opportunities, the privilege of being kids and teenager up until adulthood. Enlisting in the military is an opportunity, but some people are not qualified to join due to health issues or cannot meet the requirements. It's just an opportunity though, not an obligation.

It is wonderful you recorded the change in your thoughts and actions after you learned what you did about the N. Korean government. You show that you are a curious person who wants to learn as much as you can and that it is ok to think one thing at first and then change course if you find out that what you thought no longer fits your beliefs or values. I've never thought that there some foreign people have interest on this issue :) First of all, I'm ordinary guy in South Korea who already finished my military service and also reserve army service too. When I and most of Korean men were in the military, we educated that North Korea territory is also belonged to South Korea's territory but we can't go there simply because North Kim's family occupied illegally and that is the reason why our enemy is North Kim's family not whole North Korean people. I also feel very sorry every time I saw many poor people in there who are suffered from a starvation simply because they were born just few kilometers away from here.. I really hope this video get much more attention from many people in this world and fyi, even South and North looks very close to each other, we are still enemies to each other before our country modified our constitution and your money for visiting North Korea will be turned to the nuclear weapons to treat the whole world... Instead of helping poor little children who are literally dying in this moment.. You might think that I'm too sensitive to this issue specially for foreign friends but.... in the past, South Korea government sent lots of things to North Korea to help poor children such as rice, milk powder or cow because we thought they cannot make any weapon with those things. But Kim's family just sold those things to China or some other countries and turned them to the money for nuclear tests... So.. think twice

I see, so you would be in agreement with my Korean friend, Professor Chun who thinks that Moon Jae-In's open and friendly policy to North Korea is naïve and wrongheaded. My friend does have a point, because, as you point out, food aid sent to North Korea was seized and sold off for other purposes. North Korea has played this game for a while. However, my friend also thinks that the best outcome would be a full scale, bloody war against North Korea, because (he thinks) North Korea would soon collapse under the firepower of South Korea and the United States. Incidentally, there would probably be British forces too, because my government has promised to help out in the event of a war. My opinion is that my friend is too optimistic about a second Korean War. Of course the South would win, but so many people in Seoul would die, at the very least. However, there are times when I wish for regime change.

Look at American soldiers who went to War in many different countries araund the world, if you ask them ; I bet they don't even know the exact reasons, why they are in a country, that they don't even know it exists, for a silly war. Depends on the statue of the people, government makes people beilive that people do things for the good, whatever they're doing. And you have to live the life which is drawn for you.

@@onepieceoflife7136 The fact that you can type this shows how much more freedom you have than North Koreans. They aren't allowed to use international media, not allowed to speak to people that aren't from North Korea, not allowed to travel freely inside of their own country without a pass, not allowed to leave their country, not allowed to speak badly about their country and not allowed freedom of religion, meaning you could be punished for practicing a religion. You might think that you aren't really free but in North Korea the freedom of expression, that allowed you to type this would have more than likely got someone else thrown in a prison or executed.
