@@ChiaraAlieshI’m an attorney as well. No one even bats an eye at my luxury bags lol. That’s why you have to buy luxury bags for yourself and not for others. The average person doesn’t know half the luxury bags we do and even if they recognize the brand, they don’t exactly appreciate how expensive the bags are. The only bag I’ve seen people actually notice and gasp at is my Birkin. And it’s only because it’s gotten so much fame in the past few years on social media and whatnot

I would never, ever purchase a fake bag or say my bag was fake just to appease someone. They will have to just be mad and trigger through whatever trauma that has them feeling a way about what I do with MY money. My first “luxury” hand bag was a Coach duffle bag that I purchased almost 20 years ago after I graduated from University. It cost me 150 U.S. dollars and I saved for months for that bag. My next bag was a LV Neverfull and ,again, I saved for months until I was able to purchase it. Since then, I have been blessed to be able to afford other luxury purchases. I am proud of my purchases and wear them whenever and wherever I want. It is the most tackiest thing EVER to ask someone how much their bag costs or if their bag is fake! It’s my money. Mind your business.

I regularly get asked, “oh, they’re/that’s new?!”, “oh, how much did that cost, we know it’s real” and when they notice something but don’t know the brand I get “so what brand is that today!?” I don’t understand why anyone feels it’s okay to ask someone about what they do with their money.

Honest and true, you are speaking the story of my life within the workplace from one office/department to the next. Even among in-laws you would think they'd feel proud to have a SIL/DIL keeping herself up for just being in the family's name, the name of their brother/son. But instead, particularly if they (SIL) don't have it (well and even if they obtain it), you get all sorts of insinuations of spending up their brother's/son's money, insinuations of taking extreme measures to still be fit (they implied that I don't eat/have an eating disorder) because I wear the same clothing size from the time I said "I do" and other types of unpleasant comments made between them about me (they have a nickname for me of which they think I don't know what it means or that they'referencing me). They've made judgmental comments as if I'm not deserving or shouldn't have it. They forget or don't realize that MY HUSBAND who happens to be their son/brother met me and dated me living a stylish and physically fit way...I use to work retail for a popular department store back then for goodness sakes. They were open and friendly when they wanted to use me for my discount and then later it's as if they don't know me...I'm not invited on shopping trips or outings with them. I only hear from them if or when they need/want something. I've since remain cordial yet indifferent with them. As far as a social circle go (if you can even call it that anymore...), oh I get the praise but the eyes don't match the smile or there's the backhanded compliment. My "friends" who were actually my bridesmaids have since shown themselves I'm afraid, and has excluded me from their functions shortly after I got married...some comments had to do with looks and style along with other lies and comments made referencing me and my husband's union. Who ever had bridesmaids asking the bride on the day of her wedding if I think the groom is going to show up merely because he was a little delayed arriving to the church? Followed by whispers and stifled laughter. But well that was a looonnnng time ago...about 21 years ago to be exact and my husband and I are still going strong. It's such a shame that their shift in demeanor was based on their own insecurities over the most superficial reasons and pretty much others decided to join the bandwagon. After the hurt and confusion lifted I've also stopped caring years ago once I realized I'd outgrown them and knew I wasn't going to change how I carried myself cordially with people or stylishly on the count of any of them anyway...co-workers, in-laws, or peers.

Hi - I am 61 & retired and have always loved handbags. My Mom died in the pandemic and left me a very small inheritance payment. We used to talk about bags all the time (not luxury) just cheap & cheerful. I bought a vintage Speedy 30 and a brand new Neonoe from Selfridges so I could take my Mom’s memory with me everywhere with my inheritance. I have had so many comments and negative responses to doing this. My younger sister actually said “you’re not spending a thousand pounds of Mom’s money on a bag”… why not? She would love it. I will keep it forever, I will treasure it (& the Speedy!) Unfortunately in life people will ram what they think is “right” down your throat. As you said Steph, ‘passive aggressive’. We all chose to spend what we have on what we love. If we don’t, what’s the point? Love your videos. Thanks for listening.

This. I was raised to never ever let anyone know all of the nice things that I’ve worked really hard to save up for. I don’t come from a rich family at all and I saved up for two whole years to buy my first used Louis Vuitton bag. When I got it, I was so paranoid and afraid and I felt undeserving of the bag. Like I was parading around with something that I didn’t properly represent. I ended up selling that bag off and carrying a cute little Amazon branded bag for a while but then I’ve come across another used LV piece that caught my eye after many years and I’m going to save up for it. I realize and acknowledge that it is a “luxury” to have these items but being someone who’s worked to get something that I love, I want others to be able to enjoy what they love without feeling the prejudice and resentment of others. Life is truly too short to judge what people want to spend money on or wear or eat when we should all celebrate each other.

So what exactly am I supposed to do with my neverfulls and on the go and speedy bags? They’re work bags. What’s the point of spending all that money on a bag (or anything) for that matter, if you’re only going to wear it for a few hours occasionally on some weekend? I know this is a highly debated topic, but I cannot understand why. Besides, pretty much everyone in bigger cities wears designer bags, especially to corporate jobs. Maybe not Chanel or Hermes, but certainly Mulberry, Burberry, the LV bags with a lower price point, Gucci are all very common to see. And why would colleagues assume that it means you’re paid more than them? You could have inherited the money, your partner could be rich, you could have bought them second hand or inherited the bags themselves. People will always find something to be jealous of in others. Life is too short to start changing your lifestyle and not doing what makes you happy to appease these insecure types. Sorry not sorry. I started out reading finance magazines when I was a teenager; then I graduated to financial independence blogs; I'm now a FI podcast gal. I preface my statement with this to make the point that I am VERY careful with my money. I am called the Fashionista at work, and I'm not sure how to feel about it. What I hate is people assuming that I'm superficial because I care about my appearance. What they don't know is that I ALWAYS drive a paid for car and most of my items are luxury consignment. So, the money they spend every month on a car payment, I can afford to spend on enjoying my life. When people ask intrusive questions about anything, my response is always, "Wow, I'm surprised you feel comfortable asking someone that". It works every time.

I also humor consignment boutiques AND local thrift stores being that my style dictates I shop at those places to get the pieces I would prefer to wear. Naaaah...that would just be too real for them so they'd rather stick with the notion that I spend my paycheck on clothes and shoes and my husband is frustrated with my purchases.

My higher ups figured it out and made the same comments as stated in the video, like "you don't need a raise, you'll just spend it on handbags." Anyhow, because we are government employees, our salaries are made public. So anyone who's curious enough can go online and see a colleagues salary...I had this former coworker who would make remarks about why she choose not to "dress up" for work anymore (compared to me) look up my salary for reasons that I insinuate as getting an idea on how I dress the way I do. I've gotten plenty of questions on what my husband does for a living to the stereotypical assumption or questions about how he feels about me "spending so much money on shoes". Every work place in the private sector was the same questions too...over and over.

100% agree with the “read the room” approach. I personally don’t wear anything super recognizable to work because I’m afraid it could indirectly affect my raises and promotions. I’ve clocked that our VP carries Kate Spade, and some of the managers/directors wear lux totes and shoes, but coworkers at my level don’t, so I also don’t, but I’m sure it would be ok if I did. If I were to, I’d probs just consistently bring the same bag in so people didn’t know how many I actually have 😅

@@melodiechartier5173 Yes...that's true. I don't think it's anything wrong with that. Everyone has their point of view and opinions on one thing or the other particularly in this case when it comes to wardrobe being bought and used for style versus basic use and necessity. I wouldn't be open to spending "X" amount of dollars on a particular item of clothing or accessory myself. It's just, I don't understand why people become self-righteous to the degree of spewing their personal views on someone, seemingly with the intent of being prideful, shaming them, making them feel guilty, or well...in some situations the person feels insecure about how another person presents herself stylishly compared to her. See, just because YOU (not you personally) aren't into wearing makeup and "dressing" for work because you think it's a waste of time and money doesn't mean the other person should downplay their preference to fit yours. PERSONALLY, I'm a to each his/her own type of person...what I will or won't do isn't for everyone and vice versa. But I don't agree with people feeling so compelled to impose their self-righteous point of view on the next person or display their insecurities out on someone because they are styled well and/or make an effort while they either don't have the wherewithal or means to do the same within their capabilities or even try.

Despite making an entry-level salary (I didn't even qualify to be salaried) and being young, I had a couple bags that I had saved up for since I didn't have many expenses. In addition to nosy comments from judging female coworkers, I also had the boss' brother say "Wow, he must really be into you" after seeing my YSL bag. I did not have a boyfriend, nor would that comment have been appropriate regardless, and he was clearly making misogynistic assumptions. I had bought the bag myself using the too-little money his brother paid me for essentially running a department on my own. Luckily I quit several months later and now make twice as much freelancing. He still makes IG Stories joking about how his wife begs him for luxury items that he'll never buy for her.

I am definitely that person who is judged constantly for choosing luxury items and it’s always by people who are low key envious they don’t have it. People who actually don’t care what you have would never try to compare how you spend your money vs. how they spend theirs. Some folks just need to grow up and realize “we are not the same!” I have a co- worker who spends hundreds a week on flavored coffee drinks, hobby lobby, lunch out everyday, stuff for her pets and I have ZERO of those interests or expenses.. But when I save that same money she spends every week to buy larger designer items, she always has something to say. My response when she says she would never spend her money on luxury things my response is always “well you can’t do it because it takes more discipline to save for something special than spending constantly on a lot of little things every day!”

It is a good discussion point - my own view is that it depends on your seniority and/or the environment. When i worked for a local UK company, i would wear all my desiger bags mainly Chanel - the response was extremely negative including from the owners of the company who often made remarks such as 'we are paying you too much' When i moved to another UK local company i decided to stick to an expensive but not recognisable laptop bag but somehow they knew it was expensive. Again i would receive the 'X says we are paying you too much.' At this point i had a healthy property portfolio, shares and other investments acquired BEFORE i joined the company. Now i am back working in the City and i wear all my bags - Constance 24, Kelly 25, Kelly 28 and that is simply because it is a French Company based in the City of London where many of the women have beautiful designer bags. My suggestion is to use your female intuition - you will know if it is appropriate..............

They hold a ton and are durable, not flashy but still a great and respected brand. I bring my flashier bags into the city all the time and there are tons of people with designer bags and clothes so I don’t worry about it then. But it’s like you said, it really depends on the individuals situation. My mom would never bring a high end designer bag to work. She carried a modest, understated black leather Coach bag. However her coworkers carried Gouyard, Prada, Givenchy, etc daily. So if everyone else is doing it, why not? Have you made a best work bag video before? If not, would love to see one! So I coincidentally showed up with the same luxury bag as my sister in law, she immediately pointed it out before even greeting us and soon after that her husband asked if his wife could see my bag. Awkwardly, I handed it to him across the dining table in front of the whole family. He does a public physical side by side comparison of my purse with his wife’s purse and then promptly gives it back to me. My bag never made it to his wife who “wanted to see it.” Not really knowing what to make of what happened, my husband and I just laughed about it all the way home regarding how his adult brother can be such a petty high school girl about certain things. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I take my LV bag to my job everyday. I work in a small family run business and no one has ever made me feel bad about it or judged me. The worst thing that ever happened was a co worker expressing how ugly she thinks monogram is and will never understand how I can love it so much 😂 but that's okay because we all have different styles. Oh and sometimes I take a non luxury tote bag and when I first brought it to work a co worker said "oh that's ugly! Where is your 'fancy' bag" 😂🤣 so luxury lovers can't win.

However, after a year of taking it to work I think I may switch it up.

There's an old wise saying, do not outshine your boss. And wise people will dress nicely for work but appropriate as befitting their position in the workplace to avoid being perceived as pretentious. One's work title and/or job title doesn't indicate one's social/economic status since many people may have an additional stream of income and particularly married co-workers. However, there is that unspoken rule to not outshine your boss in an attempt to sidestep envy as people can be quite competitive and even petty. Small-mindedness and low self-esteem often create tension that ultimately festers contentious behavior so play your cards right and dress well while being mindful to keep your financial status neutral. But usually, fashion neutrality (economic ambiguity) doesn't apply to executive staff. Importantly, workplace dress attire should be appropriate, conservative, clean, and functional without sacrificing too much of one's personal style. So, in the workplace, there are numerous quality designer brands out there that fit well in most workplace environments. The result is aesthetically pleasing, and won't break one's bank account. A few of my favorite designer brands that are manufactured exceptionally well and have an excellent longstanding reputation are Coach, Dooney & Burke, and Rag & Bone.

I bought my Louis Vuitton Trevi handbag to work and I will admit that it caused a undertone stir. My manager (who is a DUFF) was real jealous and had issues. She snatch it out and wear it; I looked at her crazy and she placed it down. Later down the line, she stopped me from working overtime and blackballed me. I hated the fact that I worked hard for my belongings and assets. For someone who makes six figures should know how to manage money to buy at three designer handbags a year. My mom always told me that it’s not about what you make, it is about how you make it. I end up quitting because I could not deal with the cattiness and passive aggressiveness from my boss and her little minions (DUFF crew). I still wear my designer handbags, shoes and clothes and accessories. After my niece’s passing, I really became carefree about other’s opinion about me. I want to enjoy life and enjoy my success.

I take all my designer items to work. I got some comments in the past like, „You must earn a lot of money to be able to afford these.“ „Does your husband pay for your luxury goods?“ I always reacted by asking the following questions: „Do you travel or go on vacation regularly?“ „Do you smoke?“ „Do you go out for dinner regularly?“ „Do you go clubbing at the weekend?“ Usually the answer to 2 or 3 of those questions was yes. So I said, „See? I don‘t do any of these things. So what is the difference between you spending your money on travelling etc. and me spending my money on luxury goods? Not that I need to justify myself.“ That gave them something to think about. And today my colleagues compliment me for my good taste and some of them are even following me on Instagram 😀.

I used to start my first job wearing my chanel medium flap to work which my dad gifted me as a 18th birthday present from london. And there is a colleague same age as me is getting pissed for no reason and started to spread malicious words to my bosses and the whole of office that i have tons of chanels at home when i only have 2. she didn’t even ask how many i have btw. Throughout the day, she kept looking at my bag and commented that she would never “waste” that much money to purchase a luxury handbag. She even tried to get me fired by talking badly about me to the bosses. She also commented on my dressing (i wore dresses and heels because of the business industry we are in) and told me that i don’t have to wear heels all the time and put on so much makeup which all i did was just foundation, eyebrows pencil and eyeliner. Now she is wearing heels all the time and putting makeup to work and is splurging on kate spade bags. Sometimes i just wonder to myself, why do woman hate other woman so much when unprovoked. It just blows my mind.. Btw, she commented to my other colleague who recently got engaged and was asked to show her diamond ring to us. And guess what, that woman commented infront of everyone including the bosses that she doesn’t like diamond rings because it’s ugly and that she prefers gem rings. I just can’t.

As I’m sure most of us feel, I don’t buy ANYTHING just because I want someone to feel jealous or because I want to show off. I buy these things because I love the brands, the history, the heritage. I get the comment occasionally OH IT MUST BE NICE! I’ve started responding yes! It is nice! I love my bags. Or shoes. Whatever. I work hard for my money. I can choose to spend it however I want. I have never been one to care what others think. I also don’t spend my time worrying about what others are doing or spending their money on. Life is short. People need to do what makes them happy. I carry an LV zippy wallet I've had for years (thrilled with the quality of this workhorse item), a YSL card case, and a LV small agenda I carry every day. I work in a professional, legal environment and I have no problem carrying those or using those items if I go out to lunch with a colleague, etc. However, I usually carry those designer items in more understated bags. I love carrying my Longchamp Le Pliage to work (just a solid, heritage brand tote). I have all leather totes from the brand Cuyana (also very pleased with their quality over the years, but all leather, large totes get heavy when you start shoving files in there). I tend to keep my actual designer bags-an LV, a Chanel, a few YSL's-for the evenings and weekends. I've never been asked about any of my designer items specifically, but I have had people say, "oh I like that bag," etc and this is on the "normal" totes/leather totes. I get more comments on my jewelry and shoes, actually! I have a larger engagement ring and I do have some regular fine jewelry (diamond) pieces I wear regularly like diamond studs, a rolex, etc. But I also wear some costume jewelry (I have 2 CZ tennis bracelets in gold and silver that I bought to test the size, length and metal color for when I do eventually invest in one in the future) and I actually love both of those so much I continue to wear them proudly! People often think they are real and I am quick to let them know they aren't, but don't they look awesome! I feel like it does make people feel better for some reason. Like they know my ring is real and my watch is real, so I think they assume everything I wear is real and letting them know that I also rock some costume jewelry makes it less intimidating somehow.

UGH!!! I've dealt with resentment over my luxury items, mostly from other women and an occasional man. I used to have a Rolex years ago (one of the more plain models) and one guy asked "is that a real Rolex." I just looked him dead in the eye and said "Yeah." And that was the end of that. I've also had comments about my Hermès scarves and other accessories. And this has happened to me working in the legal profession and in banking -- two fields which tend to be highly paid. I don't know why people think these things are any of their business in the first place. Some people simply cannot handle that somebody else has something that seems so unobtainable to them. They simply cannot. Bottom line: It's my money, I earned it honestly and through hard work, I can do what I want with it. I'm not abusing kids or pushing drugs. If someone ever asked me how much something cost, I would simply ignore them or tell them they're being rude, because such a question IS rude. It hasn't been all bad, though, I've had other colleagues who also love and appreciate luxury and we've exchanged compliments and had some interesting discussions.

Lol...oh yes the "dressing up" or wearing designer clothes/handbags to work debate. My husband frequently told me both in a joking manner and a degree of seriousness, that the way I dress for work would cause me to lose a raise. What's strange is, although it didn't cost me a raise, I did attract attention from colleagues AND the office administrator despite HER position in more than one workplaces. Colleagues (especially fellow female co-workers) would draw their own conclusions indeed regarding what my husband did for a living, comment about me spending my paycheck on clothes and shoes, downplaying any designer bags I took to work (the real or fake question), and quetions like "What does your husband think about you having so many pairs of shoes?" and asking the size of my closet. On a side note, it is truly odd to me how and why fellow adults ask other working adults if their handbag is real or fake. Otherwise, I continue to wear what I like to the workplace because style is fun for me and I spend most of my time at work anyway so where else am I going to where my wardrobe to?
