I was scared to watch this video because I didn't want to become discouraged about my prospective career path in school psychology. But I was thrilled when the first two reasons you shared were that you need to love kids and you need do a lot of writing/paper work because I definitely love both of those! Score! I have to be honest, I was a little intimidated when you started talking about how much interaction you have to have with people because I am a very introverted person. I'm trying to not let that scare me too much, because I think the work I'd be doing in this field is well worth pushing myself out of my introverted comfort zone. Thanks for the video!

Interacting with people and building relationships could definitely be intimidating but it's something that you can learn and foster as you grow in the field. If you're passionate about helping children and your job, people will see that and naturally draw closer to you and seek your help. As a school psych of 9 years I agree with all your points! The only thing I’d like to add is that you have to be okay with being alone because a lot of your time will be spent writing, and you don’t get as much interaction as those in other areas of education. You also have to be very self suffient and able to work with very little supervision.

Juliet A. I am a loner as well and I find that this field is a good fit. Of course your role as a school psychologist can look very different from state to state but where I live, we do A LOT of report writing which means a lot of time on your own.

Honest000w the job market is pretty decent rn. The pay can vary widely from state to state and even city to city so it’s hard to say. I work for a large urban school district and the pay is really good here. Pay will also depend on whether or not psychologists are a part of the teachers union/contract. Some places pay psychologists at the same rate as teachers which tend to be less than others that pay psychologists on a separate scale.

I am currently applying to grad programs and this video really helped me. According to the professors at my dream school, the main thing they look for in applicants is their knowledge about school psychologists. They want to pick applicants that actually know what the specifics of the job are. They're not necessarily looking for "I want to help kids." They want to hear, "I'm going to be doing a lot of report writing", or "I'm going to be interacting with parents and teachers." Your videos really help me understand what a school psychologist does. These are great questions! You will need to know basic math to calculate scores and understand statistics in research. School psychology requires an undergraduate degree and a master's or doctoral degree. Depending on the program, the GPA requirement may differ. YESS!! You'll have to push yourself to become more comfortable in meetings and interacting with all sorts of people but if you're passionate about helping children and find SP interesting, I think you should do it. I have some social anxiety as well and I'm constantly working on speaking up in class and during meetings. It's not easy but it's worth it.

I didn’t know you were still in graduate school. But the job has really changed over the years! I have been doing it 26 years now, and there is much more report writing then ever before. I work in Los Angeles, and the lawyers have completely changed our job, for the worse. When I started in 1994, our reports were 2 to 3 pages, now they are 35 to 40 or more. So, if you want to be a school psychologist, go far away from where lawyers congregate.

@@jeong-minhwang5909 I have now retired, but I didn’t manage well, because our bosses only cared about how many assessments we could do properly in a given timeframe. But I liked completing assessments using best practices. They didn’t like this, because it takes longer. I liked crisis situations, I liked forming counseling groups, but no time for that. Just felt like a dog chasing his tail. If it wasn’t for my bosses acting so immature and only caring about completing many assessments with no mistakes. LAUSD is absolutely the worst! Please do not work there.

Hi, I have 3 more classes to complete before starting my practicum and internship. My coursework only had 1 stats class that didn't contain any mathematical computations or complex mathematical formulas. Instead, it was more of a research based stats class. You'll find it to be much easier than your undergrad stats class, as mine was a monster. You can do this!!! Blessings to you!

Well I think you need to be more specific. Going on 10 years. So school psychologist role differs slightly in every district. There’s a misconception that you do therapy as a school psychologist, you don’t. You spent most of your time testing and writing reports. But what I mean testing is each kid you test takes an average of 6 hours to test, plus the scoring , then the report which is between on average 13-25 pages depending on how many disability categories you are looking into and how complicated is the case. It can be tiring. You also can do other type of evaluations called FBA’s which is another 10 plus page report. If there is a kid with suicidal ideation guess who they will call to see if they are and need to be hospitalized. I don’t mind these things but it’s not for everyone. Many of my classmates started working as school psychologist and they ended up changing into fields because it wasn’t for them. Another thing is that when a student has behavior problems some teachers and administrators have this expectation that you can fix it and they will send or call you when the kid is acting up. There is also cases where parents may be difficult and not agree with your results or the services the school is providing so they can bring in advocates and depending how well off the parent is, they can bring in lawyers during the IEP meeting. This is not all the time, but there are times when teacher and or become upset when a child doesn’t qualify. There are good things in the field but this video is about the challenging aspects of the job. Forgot to mention that unless you have a good SST system at your sites( yes you typically get assigned to more than one school!) you will be testing a lot of kids because the referrals will come from teachers and parents.

Hello! I do not know of any international students studying school psychology but I could definitely ask my professors to see if they have more insight. Since my program is geared toward training students to become practitioners, there are some tests at the end of the program but no thesis. Hope this helps!

Hi Tiffany! :) I watch all your videos! I love them, they are so informative. I aspire to be a school psychologist/licensed specialist in school psychology within elementary schools. I am currently a rising senior in college, and I attend college within the Hampton Roads area, am not far away from Fairfax. I plan to apply to George Mason as well! I have acquired an internship this summer as a counselor for rising high school seniors and incoming college freshmen. I have research and it was a challenge coming across a school psychologist/licensed specialist in school psychology within the Hampton Roads that I can shadow or acquire an internship with. I was wondering if you have any idea on how I can expand my research ( websitest to look at, schools districts to look up, colleagues, friends, etc) to actually work with someone in the field instead of shadowing/interning with a counselor. I have been interning as a counselor & shadowing a counselor because it was the closest occupation to school psych I came across. Thank you in advance!

It sounds like you already have a lot of experience under your belt. The great thing about counseling is that school psychologists, at least in my area, are doing a lot of counseling these days, especially in middle and high schools. My program requires counseling classes and I think it's a great skill to have in the profession. Because of confidentiality issues, shadowing or interning a psychologist can be difficult. I would suggest reaching out to any local universities with school psychology programs to see if you can get connected with them about volunteer or shadowing opportunities. Some undergrad students in my program have taken classes with us during our first semester which gave them a leg up in the application process. NASP is a wonderful resource for all prospective and practicing school psychs. If you're interested, I could try to link you up with one of my professors for more information. Hi, I am a sophomore in college located in CA and I don't know what I want to do with my life, then I came across school psychologist and got really interested. I love kids, writing, and working with people. But I heard that this job requires more report wiritng than interacting with people. Is that true? It concerned me a bit because I am more extroverted than I am introverted so working mostly with people and the rest writing would've been perfect :(( If it is true how do you deal with burnout because I personally can't sit for hours only writing. also, I don't work well if I am not held accountable with a schedule or goal or time and since a school psychologist doesn't get micromanaged how do you hold yourself accountable? hiii sorry this response is SO late! you're asking some really good questions. working in a school is definitely a people person job. building relationships is so important and if you're more extroverted, you'll have plenty of chances to meet people and work with them. there is a lot of report writing involved, but i also believe that you can look for positions with less testing and report writing and more counseling and systems work (each school and district operates so differently). i've been struggling to keep myself accountable because i tend to procrastinate and then become a perfectionist. there are legal deadlines that will push you to finish your work and a team of people that are waiting to discuss your findings. i find having spreadsheets and planning in a calendar helpful but it's still an area of improvement for me!

Yes!! but some programs may have specific course requirements (typically psychology)... Some of my cohort members took a course or two after getting accepted over the summer to fulfill requirements because they studied education. I suggest contacting the schools you're interested in and asking them about prerequisites and requirements!

The job market is hot!! There's actually a workforce shortage in the nation, but you may have to move depending on where you are. I think the pay ranges from 50-80k (depends on the district just like teachers) and this also depends on your contract (9 month v 12month). It's difficult to have your own practice unless your state allows you to do so with just a specialist degree. People with a Ph.D. and license can open a practice

if you finish their program, you will be ready to apply for licensure and even the NCSP if you want it (national certification). you don't need a degree in psych but it's highly recommended only because it covers the pre-requisites. as long as you've completed all the pre-req classes, you can have a bachelor's in any area. i have more info on this on a recent video about how to become a school psychologist :-) also, feel free to DM me!

Hello~ Writing is definitely not my strong suit but I was able to build my skills and gather templates throughout my coursework. My professors really helped with my verbiage, organization, and translating school psych jargon. There's a specific way that you're supposed to write your reports (clinical but easy to understand) and it was definitely a big learning curve for me in the beginning. I still have so much to learn but I hope this is a little encouraging for you!

yes for school counseling but no for school psychology. you would need a separate degree and internship if you want to be a school psychologist.

Hey Katelyn! To start, I suggest going to the NASP website to look at NASP approved programs. Then, depending on your priorities, you can start narrowing down your choices (location, tuition, program focus, faculty, etc). I currently attend George Mason University in northern virginia. this is a great question! any work with children is great experience- ABA therapy, daycare, substitute teaching, tutoring, etc. I also recommend any research opportunities or work in a school building since you can connect with school psychologists and related staff to ask questions

I think this depends on the school level (elem v middle v high) and your district. From what I've seen at practicum, it looks like 50% assessment and report writing, 30% meetings, and 20% everything else (i.e. counseling, PBIS, etc.). I would suggest reaching out to a school psychologist near you to ask questions about their workload and day in the life

my program is 66 credits and we worked out butt off especially during our summer semester. I think you need at least 60 for it to be considered an EdS or advance degree program (which is what you need to practice)

I can only speak for Virginia at the moment but I've heard that there are different policies and regulations in those states (i.e. testing). There are a lot of school psychology facebook groups with people working in those states. You could try reaching out to them if you have specific questions!

gir0999 school psychologist are to work with all students regardless of disability. Our national and state organizations have a lot of info on how we should support students, teachers and parents. In my experience our role is often shaped by the needs of the district due to the severe shortage of our field many districts and sadly it has become the norm to focus only on sped students and evaluation, many psychs are keeping their head above water with high caseloads but we love what we do and we do it for our kids. I would say last year I worked 90% with sped including assessment, report writing, consultation and collaboration with various team members. Like Tiffany mentioned it’s ALOT or report writing!

gir0999 again it depends on the needs of the students, where the district needs you, and how big or small the district is, some districts only have 1 psych and typically these are smaller districts where the psych will have a variety or roles, larger districts may assign more than one building and maybe more assessment heavy. My last district assigned every psych 2 buildings and my current district has a variety some have 2 some have 1 and some HS have 1 main psych and 1 part time psych. Typically our role can be lonely and most likely you’ll be the only psych in the building. While your district may have 40 psychs each has their own assignment. However Psych teams are awesome and we tend to help each other out! Typically districts have psych leads who assign the schools and try to keep your preferences in mind as much as they can such as your favorite age group and number of buildings you want etc. We also work in teams so while we may not have another psych around we’ll have SLPs, OTs and SPED teachers to bounce ideas and collaborate with, they are our in building teams.

Yes!!!! I agree with everything you said! Thank you for your insight :) counties surrounding my area are trying to have one psych for every middle school and high school while assigning 2-3 schools for elementary psychs. I love that there is still a team within the school that the psych can work with, although I'm sure it's not the case for every district. I also think the field is trying to move towards prevention and mental health to support all students, not only those who need evaluations (but I'm sure it's not easy with the full caseloads!)
