Hi I'm a mama of 2 . My baby girl is 3 years and 4 months. And my baby boy now is 3 weeks and 3 days. So my question is my baby doesn't know how to open the mouth this tongue is always attached to the top of the mouth in the time he opened the mouth so the nipple can't pass through between the tongue and the top of the mouth and if it happened it is very painful. And the way he laughed is painful to. Now I don't know how to help my boy to open mouth and laugh good. Now my breast hurt so bad because even pumping is hard because of the bad size flange I have . I ordered the new size but I'm still waiting for them.😢 Same time life is hard.

Oh mama, I’m so sorry that things aren’t going great 💔 This could be caused by a few different things. It’s could be that his chin is recessed. Some babies need a few weeks before their chin grows outward. This makes it hard to get a wide open mouth. If baby was a preemie, this is possibly the case. Other causes can be a cleft palate, a tongue, or a lip tie. Is there a lactation counselor near by that you can see? I would start with a Lactation Counselor, but then you may need to see a pediatric dentist for an ENT(Ear Nose and Throat )doctor. Sometimes just a better position can help a lot. But other times you may need extra help. Are you able to latch baby at the breast at all or is it just too painful right now? You could try a different position. A laid-back position or a sitting up koala hold can both be helpful to get babies mouth open wider. It’s important to keep your milk moving so that you don’t get a clogged duct and that your supply stays good. Hand expressing, can actually remove more milk than a pump and it won’t hurt your nipple. It takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, it works great! I know it’s hard right now but it will get better.

I can feel your pain, I have same situation my baby doesn't open her mouth as well she is 5 weeks, she was born at 38 weeks, I have seen lactation consultant she have said that the baby's mouth is small and her sucking is not good so we have to wait till she grows, meanwhile I have to pump I'm using spectra pump, I was using momcozy it was too painful. I need motivation to keep going with my pumping journey, sometimes it's very hard

​@@marycahillclc thank you for responding! Baby was born via c section and did latch on on the second day , but it was not a smooth latch. We struggled because i have. a flat nipple and a bug breast. My milk did not come in. I was making colostrum and 20 ml on day 4 & 5. We were on triple feeding. I would put baby to breast , but there was no gulping or swallowing sound. Then I would supplement with pumped milk and formula. on day 15 & 16 i did not offer breast and when i offered breast on day 17, baby did not accept after that. Since then I am pumping and i get only 600ml (20 oz -21 oz) after pumping 11 to 12 times a day and two session of power pumps. I am feeding her using preemie nipple and Dr. brown bottle - paced feeding. She is 3 month old and I wish I could get her back to breast. Any tips would be really helpful. Thank you in advance.

@@veruthemathram4767 so sorry that I just now saw this. You can get baby back to the breast. It’s not easy but you can do it. Here’s my video on Nursing strike.
