Grew up with a Springer, he was with us for 17 years, absolutely amazing dog, so intelligent and overly cheeky with his playfulness and argumentative nature.. and it was always playtime with him (not a problem for 2 energetic brothers) his favourite toy was the ball, any ball, whether it belonged to us or not.. and he had a penchant for collecting plastic flower pots and bringing in any small bird fallen from a nest, unharmed.. and frogs, always with the frogs, presenting them as gifts and being so pleased about it 😂 It's been almost 30 years since he left us, and he is still missed.. and he still brings a smile thinking about his zoomy, mud-loving goofyness! ❤ Springers

We had one for 16 years. Amazed to hear that you had one for 17 years. He was an unforgettable dog what a personality. Most of our friends thought we were crazy and our dog was crazy his level of energy was incredible right till the last year he never stopped he was so funny so silly he loved doing everything camping hiking swimming I will never forget him I think of him often they say Springer Spaniels are high energy and he was on the top level of high-energy. He was just a goon. We all loved him very much. Sometimes and for many years he had us at his wits end because he never stopped. My husband used to look at him lying on the floor and saying well it's a good thing you're so beautiful.. a wonderful wonderful breed. And he was so funny he loved the family so much but really the rest of the world he could care less about. People would stop and say can I Pat him and I would say of course you can. But he always had a look on his face I don't care about the rest of the people in the world just my family.

I’ve owned springers all of my life ( 39 ) and these dogs were the smartest , polite and most loving dogs I’ve ever seen. Of course I live in the woods so there is unlimited room for excercise and they loved to ride snowmobiles, railroad welding trucks, airplanes, snowplows and especially my late Copper her dear side by side. 13 years I had her. I'm on my third Springer now, and they are wonderful dogs. But Will is right on every single point. This isn't the breed for everyone, especially if they want a couch potato dog. The Springer will demand constant exercise and play.... at least until they get around eight years old. They seem to stay puppies for a very long time. And they really aren't the best choice if you wanted a watch dog. But you just cannot find a better friend and companion. They are loyal, affectionate, and very easy to train. And you will never regret owning one if you have the space and the energy for them. I am 73 years old and recently widowed, and my little Theo forces me to exercise every day. And he actually has improved my health. My knees feel better as the result of those long walks, and my stamina has improved a lot. I think he is trying to keep me alive longer. He is the perfect dog for me, but this breed might not be perfect for everyone.

I love this story. I hope you and Theo are well, Marty. I'm 55, we just lost our dog who saved my family's life last month, and I love to fly fish and am getting into bird hunting. I bonded with a Springer named Yoda on a job site back in the 90s and have wanted one ever since.
@Marty4650
@Marty4650 4 ай бұрын
@@Boogra Springers were designed to be the perfect hunting dog. Of course they spring, but they also flush, point, and retrieve. And they have something called a "soft mouth" which means they don't damage game when they retrieve it. If you end up getting one as your outdoors companion, look for one that was "field bred." There are two types, field bred and bench bred, and the bench bred are better show dogs, but the field bred are better hunters. But both are intelligent, loyal and affectionate, so you really can't go wrong.

So, who else watched this with a Springer spaniel already sitting beside them? I've had 2 springers and a sprocker so far, amazing dogs, so smart (and very crazy at the same time). Smart enough that my first one worked out that if she went up the stairs slowly enough, her collar tags wouldn't jingle and we'd never be able to tell her to get off of the bed and use her own for a nap! We only caught her after installing a camera to see how she was making it past us every day. :'D

These are valid points. I grew up with a Springer and she became the LEGENDARY dog in our neighborhood. some people waited for us to walk er so they could come stay hello. Everyone knew and loved her & I could walk her without a leash in Boston. We did live in a small apartment, but everyone in my family devoted significant time to her exercise- especially swimming every day in the Charles River behind our house. She was incredibly intelligent, extremely energetic in a good way (because we gave her the proper exercise), incredibly well-behaved & just extremely loving. These dogs DO DESERVE a great deal of outdoor time. I can't say what they are like without that, because we gave it to her, but they clearly desire to explore and to run- even just in a yard. A Springer can be the greatest dog you've ever known as long as you provide them the exercise and stimulation they deserve

Had two Springers growing up, Jenny (aka Moose Pup) who was much older than me and sadly passed when I was 7 at the ripe old age of 16. (Love ya Moose!) The second was Ranger (Rangie, all dogs get that nickname with "ee" at the end!) Ranger was my best friend for 14 and a half years when passed in 2005, perhaps the worst/hardest day of my life; losing your childhood best friend is a major transition in retrospect. I wouldn't trade Rangie for any childhood dog/best friend in the universe, even if he always stole the best spot next to the fireplace! If there is a heaven, I know you are chasing SQs(squirrels) through the fields and the snow and that when you're down with that you're swimming and wading through Lake water. And of course you finish up with the best possible spot next to the fireplace and relax while getting endless the tummy rubs! I love and miss you still so much Rangie, and think about you every day when I look at your many framed pictures around the house! The best friend you could ever ask for!

I just lost my English Springer Spaniel at 10 days short of his 15th birthday. He was a purebred, which I've heard is incredibly rare and had very little problems his whole life. I walked him 5 miles a day as a puppy and took him to the dog park frequently. We would play games like, getting the right toy and taught him many tricks. One of the best things with him was he was truly my companion. He could tell right away before I had a depressive or anxious episode. Weirdly enough I didn't mean to train him for this. He just picked it up. I never got a "service dog" vest or touted him as such. I did baby him as my first child, quite a bit, but only took him where dogs were allowed. I didn't realize how much I relied on his ability to comfort me till he passed. My General Doctor, therapist, and psychiatrist all agree that I am not replacing him, but it might be time to get another and there happens to be an English Springer Spaniel available. I work from home now too so I have lots of time to give the puppy the training and attention that I gave our last, Toodles. I am just curious on what kind of training you offer as I would want to give this next one the training it deserves as it has been over a decade since I have trained a dog. I remember the things that worked, but I want to give the new pup the best I can. I also have 2 children now that I didn't have before. They called Toodles their older brother, it is very sweet and I love the dynamic he had with all of us.

I love springers but I don’t recommend them to most people. They’re a bit too high strung for what a lot of people are looking for in a dog. With that being said they’re amazing dogs if you know what you’re getting into. I also think it’s important to mention that there are technically two kinds of Springer Spaniels. There are “field” springer spaniels and there are “bench” springer spaniels. Field springers are smaller and leaner and tend to be much more high strung and active, whereas bench springers tend to be larger, have longer coats, and more laid back and easygoing. I grew up with a high strung field springer but we had friends with a bench springer and he was very lazy and laid back as could be.

My girl is super loving, hates water, doesn’t hunt. Her best friends are chooks. Likes teenagers, gets very attached to humans and other family dogs. She has a single layered coat and Long show ears. She was a super pain in the arse, and chewed bloody everything in site if it didn’t move quick enough. If you have a couple years of patience, they are really the best bloody dog ever. And I grew up breeding border collies, rescued a blue and red heeler and also a coolie. The springer, as much as I love my babies that have pasted, it my favourite by far, personally, smarts, and just that connection you have with them. Amazing experience when you get the right springer to suit your lifestyle.

Our 11mo Springer has more adoring neighbors visit him in the garden thru the day. He is highly stimulated with all of the family happening’s (4 &9yo with indoor skate boards and tussling). We raise low media kids and we are all highly involved. Now, bc he is well stimulated (on rainy days he gets massages bc he cannot go in/out all day) and one thing that I read and learned about the spaniel breed & love… they’re as Eb and flow as you are. They will ignite your lack of motivation, however, if you’re sick for days they can hang tight on the snuggles. And their wiggle butt will make you smile. And on the last day of rest they push you to get moving bc it honestly is the best for all! So enjoying our Toffee Boy :)

Wonderful video and advice. I grew up on a large farm with three Springers through the years. My father, brother, and i were hunters then, and we had four run-off water ponds on the farm where we hunted during duck season. (Many wonderful stories of the retrieving savvy of these dogs). As a farmer, my father was in the open 10 hours a day, seven days a week, and the dogs followed him everywhere... alongside the tractor or helping him irrigate (of course!). I loved those dogs. Fast forward to almost 60 years later... my father and his sisters sold the farm almost 50 years ago. I live in town at the end of a cul-de-sac with a fairly large wedge-shaped yard. We've had two dogs through the 30 years we've lived here, the last one being a Spaniel mix rescue dog who lived 15 wonderful years with us. This past year I made the decision we needed another dog... and I wanted the dog of my youth: a Springer Spaniel. I talked my wife into getting a purebred puppy from a breeder. My bad. While she has the wonderful qualities of Springers (the intelligence, the faithfulness, the love, etc), she wants and needs more space. As commented on in the video, a Springer with a yard can work, but we must must MUST get her out three times a day, and finding a good place where she can run is hard to find here. I have a friend with some open acreage thirty miles away, but I can't impose on him as much as she needs (which is multiple times daily). Without proper exercise, she is bored and becomes destructive. She will walk with a transitional leash, but pulls very hard on any other lead. She wants to be working the trail and brush ahead, as is in her DNA. I feel that I have done the dog a disservice by bringing her here, and I am living with a lot of guilt for how our lifestyle doesn't suit her needs. I am trying to contact hunting friends in order to find her a good home. We have fallen in love with her, and it will be hard for my wife and me to part with this beautiful soul, but I can honestly say that this was one of the worst decisions of my life (and, yeah, I've made a few in 66 years).

Don’t give her away. It will leave a hole in your heart. My husband and I have had 3 ess and all loved our big yard and very large pool. We run them in our yard and make sure they had play dates with other dogs. Great with other dogs, we socialized them by 6 months. Absolutely loved kids as long as the children knew how to treat a dog.

I have two springers they are absolutely amazing dogs!!! They are super smart. If I were to say one thing about getting a springer......you MUST exercise them min. 3 times a day. Lots and lots of runs and exercise when they are young so if you are a very athletic person you will love taking them out on hikes etc. Great dogs for athletes and outdoor personality types. I love my springers and will continue to get springers going forward they are loving, amazing companions, and when trained extremely obedient. Good video for those who don't know too much about this breed.

I'm on my 4th Springer spaniel right now, and obviously I consider them the best breed… for me. As you say, they aren't for everyone. I've got a cabin back in the woods that my current Springer absolutely loves, but unfortunately she is prone to car sickness, so I have to stop about every 45 minutes on the way, and it's a 4 hour trip. She loves when I hop on the ATV or mountain bike and take her for runs in the woods. She'll run halfway down my driveway turn around and stand there and look at me and bark at me as if to say "Come on, let's go!" I also live in an area where there are numerous dog parks to take dogs to although I don't utilize those, I prefer the woodlands that are publicly owned. That way I can put my mountain bike in my trunk and drive to where I can give her a true workout.

Definetly a watcher and not really a protector. I remember years ago, when my spaniel barked in the middle of the night, turned out that someone tried to steal a moped outside of the house. However when a friend just walked inside the house without any of us at home, he just wiggles his tail and was just happy instead of attacking the friend. (Which he hadn’t seen before)

I have two springers, one 8 months the other 2 years and they are the super chill. However, the breeder I use has higher and lower energy males and females she uses. I chose lower energy parents that passed down these traits. They look like field springers but are very lazy. This is super helpful with rainy PNW winters.

My springer Boone is a great dog, best dog I have ever been around or had, he is friendly loyal and easy to train, and he is great for my young boys, he is very sensitive though and can be a level 22 clinger. I do let him run around as much as possible but like all hound dogs he sometimes will follow the scent and get into a trance and not hear my commands at first (trying to work on that more) but 95% of the time or more it only takes two or three times to call him back. Oh and he absolutely hates cats, like I’ve never seen a dog hate a cat as much as he does lol.

As someone who grew up with a large Kennel business, a father who held Schutzhund training classes and trained guard dogs for Spectrum Hospitals in Grand Rapids, Michigan (USA), I have met almost every breed of dog there is, I've seen how much each breed can vary as far as personalities, instincts and drives go, and I can tell you the ESS is one of the most versatile breeds there are! They're like 3rd on my list for good beginner dogs. But with dogs, you cannot go on breed alone. I've had 2 dogs of the same breed be so opposite and so much more like a dog of a different breed that it's useless to get a certain breed for it's personality. I've had a Jack Russell who was DISGUSTED at mice, a Neapolitan Mastiff who would WELCOME every stranger onto our property, dopey-ass dobermans that slept all day and didn't excel at anything or dominate anyone 😂 and other dogs who did those jobs better than the one who was bred to do it 😂

I have a Springer cross named Bonnie. I got her from a shelter so I'm not sure what she's crossed with. I think Pointer, her vet thinks Setter. She's quite small, 14 kgs. She's very sweet, loving and smart. She's also super clingy, energetic and stubborn. She craves attention from everyone even though she's with me for most of the day. It hasn't been the easiest task to train her and at 1+ years old we're still not there. She keeps jumping on people even though she knows the command down/off and she pulls like crazy on walks. If someone tries to take her away from me she grabs onto my leg and clings on for dear life. I love her to bits and it's probably my fault for indulging too much. My previous Springer, Missy (also from a shelter) was much more mild mannered. Granted she was a senior, I got her when she was 7 and was much easier to train. She spent most of her life in a cage (hunting dog in Cyprus) and bred multiple times. She had zero training when she came to me but she was house trained and learned to properly walk on a leash very easily. I just wish I'd had them both at the same time. Anyway, I'm rambling. Any tips for easier training?

Springers aren't dogs by the time they reach 4-5. They're apart of the family. When I was younger, my father decided we could get a dog, and we got a springer. My father did not want a dog, did not like the dog, and was very uncomfortable around him. Nowadays they sit together on the couch, enjoying life as best friends.

I got to witness a 1 in a million springer spaniel. Mad energy and mad strength and insane jumping and running capability. He could outrun pro racing dogs like whipets and greyhounds and was able to pull you off your feet if he was on a lead. He was just riduclous there was no limit on what he was capable of he died at 12 of 3 cancer tumours which were not obvious due to his soft nature and just incredible athletisism. He was put to sleep he couldn't feel his three tumours he was still stupidly strong and athletic he went out fighting in a blaze of glory. Its the saddest death I think I will ever witness he seemed to young to die and not ready, he could of lived but he would have lost a leg something that would be far worse and tramuatic for the dog given its athletic capability.

i have a springer and i only have one warning. as far as mine goes, she is virtually indestructible. my idiot has had brillo TWICE, brownies, a whole chicken, onions, and whatever she finds outside. if she’s limping for some reason, more often than not she’s over it in just a few minutes (depending on the severity, we do make her lay down and rest and then go from there) as far as i can remember, it’s never led to an emergency vet visit. she’s slammed her head against walls while playing, taken tumbles, whatever. she’s 9 and a half and acts like a 5 year old. maybe younger. she’s got energy, spunk, and still the same amount of mobility. she’s also had some medical issues and nothing can beat this dog. she’s amazing and i wouldn’t exchange her for the world. she’s a field line springer spaniel. so yeah, she’s virtually indestructible so if you’re thinking of getting one, and i can’t speak for the rest, but if they’re anything like her, keep that in mind. cheers!

My last Springer who has passed a good few years ago he was very affectionate to everyone and every dog he met . But when the postman decided he would just walk in my house because i didn't hear him knocking and try and put a parcel on the kitchen table my Max pinned him to the wall haha. I was shocked as i never thought he would do that but like i told the postman you are an intruder and he stopped you, you had no right to be in my house unless i invite you in , He had a steak for dinner that night :) . Ive had springers for over 30 yrs they are the best breed to own but you do need to do research to truly understand their needs a lot get rehomed within the first two years because people can't cope with them .They need training , socialising and above all people who really understand them. Ive sadly had to have my Jasmine put to sleep a month ago and it's beyond devastating to loose them and my Jake is also missing her so much as they were extremely close so extra cuddles and sharing memories together is a good part of our day along with long walks at his favorite places .x

These dogs, if bored ,will make their own brand of FUN. Stuffies, shoes , your furniture will become victims. For the right families these dogs are wonderful companions. For any breed, do your research and be realistic about what type of dog is right for your family.
