Bob and Iain Wallace from Chestnut Hill Outdoors talk about the advantages of perennial tree food plots and how they attract and hold deer on your property throughout the year.
The advantages of a perennial tree food plot over your typical perennial food plot is that once you plant the trees, the only thing required is a little maintenance for decades of production.

That’s great advice for feeding humans too! We need forest gardens and permaculture so much right now.

I purchased and planted two Dunstan Chestnuts from you, and they have really grown well here in North Arkansas. Since the day my boy and I put them in the ground (November 3, 2017) they have grown 5 to 7 times larger in size. I'm sure looking forward to getting a harvest from them. Keep up the good work you guys do in the nursery and educating the people of the importance of planting these trees our wildlife enjoy and benefit from so much!

Great advise! I still agree food plots are better than trees though, because in my area deer are already feeding on woody browse when they come out to the foodplots.

That's the way my dad talks about the projects for wildlife habitat I've been coming up with. Oh well the next generation lives on.

How far do you space your persimmons and chestnuts from each other? I am looking to start an orchard this summer with a variety of chestnuts, persimmons, and hazelnuts.

Ryan Freiji Anywhere from 20-100 feet is proper spacing for chestnut and persimmon trees. Chestnuts are insect and wind pollinated, so the fewer trees you have, the closer you will want the spacing to be for pollination purposes. Also, remember to plant on a hill-top or hill-side, or anywhere that has well drained soil and good sun exposure. This will help to avoid water collecting at the roots and potentially causing root fungus that can ultimately kill the trees. Hope this helps! And good luck with the orchard this summer!

I hunt a native persimmon Grove . They are spaced from 2 to 6 feet apart with all sizes of trunks. They form a solid canopy which allows no undergrowth. Perfect for deer hunting in. Probably my favorite place on the planet.
