This is my favorite Ranger subclass in the game and I feel it super underrated. Thank you for making a video about it! I feel like making this a movement focused build would be awesome. Taking feats like Alert and Mobile; and choosing races that have extra movement, you can really kite someone around the battlefield at higher levels!

I am about to a run a new player through a game, and she asked about Detect Portal. I read it and said immediately that it would always be active and that it would let her be able to make a perception check to see if an NPC or Creature had recently traveled either vie portal or by plane shift (with in the last day). It made sense to give the first third level feature a little bit more mustard. I also think Detect Magic should have been baked into HW's kit and I intend to give that to her character as well. I really think it's cool that you just happened to put a video so close to when I am about to start this game with the player in it. I think Gloomstalker is the video I would love to see next most but if you wanted to be a little bit more interesting in the sense that most everyone loves those first three levels of Gloomstalker and you might want to save that video: I would love to see what you think about Monster Slayer.

I'm currently playing a Harengon ranger from the Feywild. While out on a patrol protecting his village came across a Fey crossing and was transported to the prime material plane. He has gained the horizon walker's power from residual planar energy.

I have a horizon walker player in my game and we spun around the planar protector narrative a bit. The campaign does not take place on earth/the material plane. He is basically a smuggler who finds people who have been displaced and try to guide them back to portals home behind the back of a powerful church who does not the earthlings to go home to tell earth about their existence. We joke that his build and concept is so specialised he wouldnt work in a conventional dnd game.

Woo! Love this series! I never gave this subclass a proper chance, but that’s mostly because it hasn’t fit thematically in my games. It’s nice to see a different perspective on this subclass.

I have 2 Horizon Walker Rangers and LOVE playing them both! One is SUPER complimentary, Oath of the Watcher Paladin / Horizon Walker Ranger. This is like peanut butter and jelly, a croissant with butter. My other one is a Shadar-kai Horizon Walker Ranger / Archfey Warlock. Born of the feywild, sensing portals was in their blood, just a part of life. But to add flavor, sellout later in life, betraying their circle by joining forces with a powerful extraplanar creature in exchange for a power artifact or weapon.

I've always mixed this with fighter or cleric. Been working on a build with Sword Bard favoring more of a Charisma build. Can have defensive and dueling/two weapon fighting styles and play more of a melee ranger. Cleric makes mixing this with Spirit Guardians rather crazy

Good video. I agree with the tweek, however, if you go fighter /HW with that tweak you can go fighter 11 and get 4 attacks. Yes at level 19 though.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so very much for the Horizon Walker video. I just chose this subclass for my Githzerai ranger in my Out of the Abyss adventure. I agree that it is hard to integrate the third level ribbon feature without some kind of a prompt. Are there any tips or tricks you could recommend to help make this feature worthwhile, or any questions to ask our DMs that might help us role play discovery of these portals. This is far and away the most informative video I’ve seen on this class and you never disappoint. Thank you so much for your hard work. I look forward to rocking this character. I know it’s going to be great!!!!

I'd love to play a Horizon Walker for my upcoming Vecna Eve of Ruin game, but I'm hoping our DM let's me tweak a couple abilities.

Seems like it might help if the player sketched out 2-3 alternate plane bullet points to take pressure off the DM.

I imagine the party early in a campaign making some magical mistake or activate an unknown artifact and a nude horizon walker drops on the floor out of thin air, doesn't know where he is and tries to figure out where he'd come from and how to get home in his dimension... another character I'd so much like to play and as forever GM I never will ;)

Princes of the Apocalypse is the only campaign I can think of where detect portal is useful. Other than that it’s not a bad subclass.

Gonna have to hard disagree with you on Planar Warrior being a good feature. It costs you a bonus action every turn which conflicts with Dual Wielding, Crossbow Expert, Ethereal Step, Hunter’s Mark, and Misty Step. I’d much rather have a lower damage die if it meant making the feature an always on passive like the Fey Wanderer or Swarm Keeper.

Never liked this subclass. But, admittedly, I'm one of those who hates the whole concept of multiverses. I also don't see much in the way of variety with the Horizon Walker. Seems very monotonous. I'd love to get your take on The Hunter. I feel that that subclass is underrated.

HW desperately requires a flexible DM. It has so many kool abilities but that 7 & 11 are in the wrong order and the portal sense needs a homebrew switch.

It’s really not powerful enough to use in a small party, if you want to pull your weight you really need to play anything else

Don't get me wrong, it gives some great vibes/flavor, but it is... badly written. There are three main factors. 1. haste would be maybe a little bit better than "okey-ish" with bonus action casting and without "skip your next turn" button. Currently i wastes like half of your damage, just because you casted this spell. Haste is cool, but it is comparable to True Strike in terms of power. Really. 2. Planar warrior is kinda bad: - would be fairly balanced if it would give you 2d8 from the start - would be better with giving you choice to deal force or weapon damage - WEAPON damage type is just better + one of the best martial feats does not work here - bonus action heavy 3. Why, oh god. WHY. Why is his basic ability at 11lv? That is so utterly bad. ... oh, you literally mentioned this. Edit: I am currently fighting myself. I want to play this class next week somehow, but I know we will probably end this campaign at 10-12lv.

Third level you get to add the force damage after you waste your bonus action to mark a creature within 30 ft of you, then nothing else turns on until level 11 too late in the game for a 30-ft teleport. I'm commenting on this video although how bad it is this is one of the worst ranger classes what am I talking about there's only two good ones and that swarm keeper in gloom stalker
