Why You Should Play a MultiScale (or Fanned Fret) Guitar | HOW ITS USED

Multiscale guitars have grown rapidly in popularity in recent years, and even if you don't play an extended range guitar, you should take the time to check them out. Better tension on the bass strings means you don't have to play thicker gauge strings, and the treble strings stay slinky and great for leads.

Hey man thanks for the video, was great. Can I ask, is tapping on a Multi-scale guitar more difficult? Especially at the higher frets? Thanks dude!
@aminorerror
@aminorerror Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting Sam, appreciate it! For most tapping ideas I don't find the multi scale to be an issue, In a lot of ways, the slant of the frets in the upper part of the neck make playing a little easier but I do find it a little tricky if you're playing at tapping ideas that are in the same fret and on adjacent strings. It's still possible to play those ideas but they are a little bit trickier, and take extra concentration and after a bit I think you'll get used to it. Good luck!

Great review! I am considering getting a Kiesel Zeus with multiscale now they have released a trem for it. I think they look cool AF and I love the bespoke finish options. I only want a 6 string and I know you say the multiscale isn't really worth it but I'd be going for the asthetic more than anything. Trouble is, I have pretty small hands, do you think I would struggle with a 6 string multiscale on the lower notes? I play more blues/pop/rock than anything else. Thanks...
@aminorerror
@aminorerror Жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping on back and checking out my video! I don't think the six string fan will bother you, although you'll def want to talk to Kiesel before pulling the trigger on a build. All the 6's I've played with a fan have been Strandy's and their multi scale radius isn't as extreme as other companies. My Kiesel Vader 7 string has a pretty aggressive fan to it and it's a bit uncomfortable for me in some spots (I've got very average sized hands). I'd recommend going with scale lengths that aren't too extreme when you order, then you should be very happy with it. The new tremolo models are really exciting, I'm so stoked that they're gonna be making those now!

I have a multiscale myself too, an Ibanez RGD61ALMS CLL. I was wondering if you drop-tune your guitar often. I usually drop mine to B and I use D'addario NYXL strings 10-52. However I have been a guitar shop and they told me I can't keep dropping it into different tunings and I have to set my guitar up just for a single tuning. I am a bit confused now because I thought the whole concept of a multiscale was for you to be able to downtune it.. Do you have any advice or so?
@aminorerror
@aminorerror 3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on a stunning guitar! To answer your question...yes and no. Technically when you change the tuning you'll want to re-intonate it and setup the relief of the neck to play best with the new tuning. The tensions have changed, and the multiscale will help, but it'll be like a Ferrari that's engine needs a tune up...you won't be getting the most out of it. That said...you won't damage the guitar by changing the tunings and if your just jamming and having fun then it doesn't matter. If you're planning on recording I'd recommend getting it setup but if you aren't just play and have fun. Also, if possible just leave the guitar in the drop tuning and get another one for standard, that's what I actually do. I've got a dedicated seven string for drop Ab tuning, and then another one for standard tuning. Hope that helps, and consider giving the channel a sub for more content like this!

How about the visual position of the frets, I mean the SG has the frets more "outsidish" i.e. where you eyes normally see the 5th fret in a regular guitar, in the SG you got the 7th
@aminorerror
@aminorerror 11 ай бұрын
Not sure I know what you mean, SG's have regular fret dots on the side of the neck and most have the trapezoidal inlays. Either way, it's very easy to see the fret markers on a fanned fret guitars. There's no difference between a multi scale or a regular guitar. Thanks for watching!

Great review! Might wanna modify a fanned fretted guitar. Check my fretboard invention. It has grooves to allow FretCorner bends on ALL strings. Adds extra x notes to pulloffs creates strobe FX on slides as fingers drag over FretCorners and infinite sustain on vibrato plus new note jumps on bends as string reconnects at higher point. Kirk Hammett did it on master of puppets solo and many others on high string. Maybe I can hire you to do a review later this yr.

In the upper frets, yes it will help. Riffing down lower by frets 1 thru 4 will be the opposite though. That said, a Strandberg with the endure neck might help. Best of luck!

I’ve thought about buying an inexpensive one to test it out. I’m thinking of buying the Harley Benton R-457MN WH Fanfret (about $180). Guitar Max reviewed it, thought it was a good deal at the price, but thought pickups sounded a bit muddy. Thoughts, anyone?
@aminorerror
@aminorerror 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! I don't have any experience with Harley Benton or that guitar but I've heard good things about that brand for the money and at $180 bucks you really can't go wrong just to get your feet wet and adjusted to a multi scale guitar. One thing to keep in mind too is that the fan on multi scale guitar varies by brand and model too, so if the HB is uncomfortable other brands like Strandberg might be more comfortable for ya because the fan is less extreme. If you haven't already consider giving the channel a sub for more content like this too!

i know im a but late to the party but i was wondering about barre chords in general and how you have to tilt your hand in order to fret the notes correctly. Im a bit worried about tilting my hands at weird angles that could possibly hinder my technique
@aminorerror
@aminorerror 3 жыл бұрын
Playing barre chords on a multi scale instrument isn't any harder than on a normal guitar, and in some places it's actually a bit easier because the frets curve in a similar shape as your hands natural curve. The only time I find multi scale a little tricky is on wide stretch single note riffs down low around frets 1-3, but only on my Kiesel Vader because the fan is more extreme than on the Strandberg models. Strandberg has a smaller fan and I find it more comfortable for me since I have average sized hands.

@@aminorerror your content seems really interesting, I subbed. Btw do you think that headless guitars are substantially better than normal ones? The aesthetics kinda ruin it a bit for me but I dont mind if they are much better
@aminorerror
@aminorerror 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub! On a six string guitar, I don't think headless is really necessary if you don't like the aesthetics although it will help slightly with neck dive and over all weight. On any extended range guitar like a seven or eight string IMO it's a must. It radically cuts down on the weight, overall size and most importantly neck dive. Strandberg's also have the strap pins on the back of the upper horn so they're one of the most comfortable ERG's out there.

I like strandberg multiscale but I dunno. I don’t mind too much having a longer scale. My rg 8 has a 27 which I’ve played 25.5 my whole time I’ve been playing. I use 9s and yeah they are a little harder to bend. But it’s nothing too horrrible. Something i dislike is there isn’t really any multiscale tremolos but strandbergs. So I like sticking to normal scale 😄 I could imagine multi scale is uncomfortable with Donald trump hands 🤣

What can I say...I've got tiny baby hands! lol I've def thought about going baritone and its def great if you're playing a lot of rhythm but I'm mostly lead these days so it just makes the most sense for my playing. Totally agree with ya, it would be sick if Kiesel or Ibanez came out with a multi scale tremolo guitar just so there'd be less of a monopoly on that but I guess it is what it is. I love the 'berg look/sound/vibe so I'll stick to my Boden OS original for all my leads for the time being!
