Something Echoes pioneered that gets often overlooked is its introduction of fully voice acted cutscenes. When everything from the grandest battles to the silliest supports are fully voiced, it gives the characters a lot more room for expression and a lot of my favorite characters won my heart because of their incredible voice acting. Big shoutouts to the localization and dub, by the way, because the English cast is literally perfect.

@@TriAzF I literally played Chapter 1 of FE3 on NSO and it has the exact same UI and QoL problems on the field as FE1 and 2. The unit menu is STILL inbetween clicking on a unit and moving them, moving has the most sluggish feeling grid and you cannot see the details of an engagement when you try to take it, you just have to precalculate how much you and your opponent do. Granted, the RNG is not broken like FE1, so that's nice. Does not help much tho. And I guess you can see actual stats in battle now, but that is pointless because those are visual fluff anyways. The moment you are in battle, you already don't have the ability to act on that information anymore, it just gets applied.

I really like to revisit radiant dawn a lot. It is arguably the most sound game mechanically speaking. Dispite being one of the longest games every map feels kind of like a trial map as you are given vastly different units to work with all the time. Your comment on Trainees is an opinion I wish more FEtubers had. Sure they're not the most optimal (except Ross kinda), but I find myself using all 3 Trainees on most of my runs just for how FUN they are to build, and the branching promotion system means they have even more possible end-points for great replayability. I'm Paladin Amelia all the way though, not too fond of General Amelia. (Despite my love of armours as you can tell from my avatar)

I didn't play any of FE1 to FE3, but their remakes cover those stories so I consider that sufficient. Awakening and Fates aren't my favorites (particularly Fates) but I have to admit this video did give me a new appreciation for those games. Gotta say that right now is truly a great time to be a Fire Emblem fan. It's so great to see Engage be mostly well received and inspire people to go back to older games in the series. I played it without any planning ahead, shipping couples just based on personality and it was an absolute monster of a game that took me 2 months and to date has been the only FE to make me concede to losing a unit to permadeath, as I couldn’t clear the last boss without letting one of my front liners drop to set up enemy positions where I could clear them out on my next player phase.

I'm on record as a Fates defender; the story works a lot better if you're willing to look at it more through an emotional lens than a detailed one or if you're a fan of like, Saturday morning cartoon fun (which I definitely am). The same can be said for Engage's story, they're both built more on Pathos than Logos. Plus, the presentation of Fates is lovely, with a great style and animation in the cinematic cutscenes and clear distinctions in both looks and music for the different factions, making them feel more like different countries than in some other games. I may also have a soft spot for it because it helped me get through a rough spot emotionally in my life.

Guess it helps that I just got done with Metroid Fusion for my first time and Megaman Battle Network earlier this year and just kind of miss the retro Gameboy style. That being said, I do recall seeing some commercials? trailers? for the Gamecube one and thinking 'that looks like Wind Waker, but cooler', only to find out it didn't really play like it, and probably hearing about units dying means they are permanently gone kind of putting me off it back then. Much more excited to get to it now. I'm very curious what a Fire Emblem player who enjoys seeing older, or non-conventional mechanics would think of the Shining Force series. It was more-or-less the Sega analogue to Fire Emblem back in the day and has it's own mechanics that make it a very different experience, such as an MP system, magic being more focused on AOE than simply acting as an alternate damage type, and as opposed to turns, characters on both sides move in turns based on stats and luck. Fast characters can sometimes move twice in between a slow character getting two turns. It's also got a more familiar RPG exploration style, between battles you explore towns and overworld areas, talk to people, visit shops ect.

It started when she wanted to stream Awakening lunatic mode to me, but when we finished that she was like "you know, I've always wanted to play through every fire emblem game". Anyway, we're now up to FE12, which on lunatic mode is certainly an experience! The games have definitely had their ups and downs! Our unfortunate experiences with FE3 have made me biased against Marth, Gaiden was surprisingly unique and enjoyable (we're looking forwards to Echoes), FE7 (Hector Hardmode) was probably the most well-rounded and generally enjoyable game (our Lyn got super strong for some reason and she killed the final boss dragon), the Tellius games had the best story and characters (Ike is my favourite lord, Lyn and Hector come second) but the long enemy phases were somewhat suffering, and we had a great time churning through FE11 sacrificing many characters to get all the Gaiden chapters. I don't really play FE myself but it's been super fun to watch and we've been having a great time, so I'd definitely recommend giving a full playthrough a shot! Especially since emulation is free and not too difficult. The older games will emulate well even on crappy old laptops.

Something important that isn't really mentioned, and important to me is the game "ambiance". I personally enjoy Fire emblem games when there is less fantasy and anime characters and tropes (that are heavily pushed since Awakening). I appreciate more "realistic" settings with western medieval elements and references. I like when the story feels like a real journey, traveling through states, forests, replenishing goods at towns, having a merchant following your armies. I don't like when you have those magical hubs that kills the immersion. I like when the geography makes sense and slowly shifts from plainnto mountains, to deserts etc. I do not like when Japanese nation is glued to fire nation, that is next to water nation. I like when the characters make sense and have dialogues that make you feel they are real lords thanks to the vocabulary they use. It isn't just what people call "the story", it's all those world building elements that immerses the player to a medieval world filled with fantasy. I feel games with great ambiance like FE6/7/8, Ike's, SOV or 3H to an extent have this little edge compared to other games.

I have a hard time going back to the pre-GBA entries (or the shadow dragon remake), because a big selling point to me of the Fire Emblem series over most of the other turn-based tactical games out there is the fact that every unit is a unique character. Without the unit-specific side conversations, there's nothing to distinguish between them and random generic soldiers except for a portrait, so it feels like the whole game is just one lord plus entourage where the later entries felt like a found-family of colorful heroes each with personal motivations that brought them together in pursuit of whatever your cause is. And even thought I grew up on the GBA games, they're kind of hard to go back to now because of the limit for how many total support ranks each character is allowed to have. I feel like I'm only getting about 1/5th of the story and characterization on each playthrough, which as a kid felt like a reason to replay over and over, but now that I have so many things pressing on my time I really can't justify re-doing a whole game over and over unless it has dramatically different choices and routes (like Fates or Three Houses). [I need to get around to the Radiant games; I never had a gamecube and haven't emulated them yet.] I've heard a lot of people say the series peaked with Awakening, and I might have to agree with them (though SoV and 3H both provide some competition), since it refined a lot of the mechanics better than anything before and was the first game that opened up support conversations so you could get the whole story of each of your characters in a single playthrough if you care enough. And while I'm not personally a fan of the child mechanics, I really appreciate how well it was integrated into the story with the alternate futures and time travel. My only real problem with it is that the 3DS models and animations will never look half as good as the old pixel art. Fates had very cool mechanical ideas, I like how they iterated on the pair-up mechanics from awakening and the idea of having different class and weapon lists for each culture was really fun to me. But the writing didn't grab me as much, there were multiple issues with the localization, and when you take away the core time travel story the whole idea of child units becomes sort of off-putting. And the whole 'capture enemies and then "interrogate" them until they fight for you against their friends and family' thing is definitely a war crime. Ultimately, the game felt like a downgrade from Awakening. Shadows of Valentia is great. It's definitely a different kind of game from the rest of the series, but I enjoyed all the things it experimented with. Some bits felt unrefined, just because they hadn't been iterated on fourteen times before, but they still worked and I hope that future entries draw more inspiration from here. Plus the story is nice and the characters are cool and the new emphasis on exploration is fun to me. Finally, Three Houses is my current obsession. I miss some bits of the 3DS games like the pair-up mechanic, and even though the 3d models are finally starting to look good I don't like them as much as the 3ds pixel art, but overall it's a strong contender for best in the series imho. I love how pretty much the whole cast is here from the beginning and freely interacting with each other even before you convince them to join you, so you never have problems with a late entry to the group feeling underdeveloped or like their niche was already filled before they arrived (anybody who joins after about the halfway point always feels like an outsider to me). I love how every character has unique aptitudes that make a specific class (or three) and specific weapon type *best* for them, but without locking you into *just* that option or ever making me question why an archer can't also carry a sword until after they promote or vice versa. I love how detailed the development of the world is, where so many otherwise great games in the series seem to have a generic fantasy cardboard cutout behind their story. And thematically, I love how in all four routes there's a bunch of things you can do to make things better and mitigate the damage, but the story is always going to end in some degree of tragedy... which integrates perfectly with the game mechanic where the protagonist can turn back the clock to try to avert disaster, and with the NG+ mechanics, to let me RP as a teacher trapped in a time loop desperately going back to the beginning over and over trying to find a way to save all their students and going slowly more insane with every loop. [I haven't touched Engage yet, but what I've seen doesn't really appeal to me. It feels like they took all the wrong lessons from Heroes, and decided to lean hard into the 'technicolor waifu collector' aspect at the expense of like, having an interesting story or characters? And the callbacks to favorite entries earlier in the series feel more like token nostalgia bait than an actual return to the characters or connection with their stories... Maybe I'm just being unfair but I think this takes a lower priority than getting an emulator for the first entries, and probably getting around to the Warriors spinoffs.]

The first "Warriors" game is a solid "meh" as far as story and character go, but it does have some good supports, being funny and/or heartwarming. My favourite funny one is between Oboro and Leo while I think the best heartwarming ones are between Tiki and Robin and Azura and Olivia. The gameplay is really fun though. I don't know enough about musou games to give a proper explanation, as "Three Hopes" was my first one. On subject of "Three Hopes", just as the original FEW and HW ("Hyrule Warriors") was a mash of various characters and settings film the whole franchise with a story to justify it (though I do think "Hyrule Warriors" has a good story), "Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes" is FEW "Age of Calamity", right down to being focused on one game in the franchise and being an alternate timeline. The gameplay is largely the same, but you have more experimentation with builds and great QoL changes such as not being punished for Auxiliary Battles (permadeath is still a thing there in there on Classic Mode, though), auto weapon repair after fights, and being able to level characters to same as your higher level one. It also runs alot better than "Age of Calamity".

I still remember when #FE was supposed to be a Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem crossover game and then it got canned for that weird thing I don't hate it but I'm very sad lol. Although Majin Tensei on the SNES is kind of like Fire Emblem a bit so I guess we still have a sort of "crossover" to go back to

Literally playing Engage as my first FE (at least more than trying one map on Awakening and Echoes), I'm surprised that I haven't dropped it already even at the base difficulty. Mostly beacuse I'm not a fan of the main feature of FE which are growth rates. Even when you can manipulate some of them the idea that I have to try RNG even with level ups to me it's......... not exactly great. The only other one I tried more than a few minutes is TMS mostly because I'm a Atlus fan and I do enjoy the Idol/Toku theme of the game.
@BigKlingy Жыл бұрын
Engage has a fixed growth mode, but you have to either beat the game to unlock it, or play Maddening. (Which is locked to Fixed by default and you have to beat it to unlock Random)
@Realmidboss Жыл бұрын
@@BigKlingy I'm still forced to either playin once on random or going for the hardest mode so it's not a good way to make me interested.

Do you recommend the easier "Elite Mode"in Thracia? Why or why not?
@Sidnv Жыл бұрын
You can go for it. It probably won't change the experience much. Combat is not that important in Thracia, but the extra exp may help in some of the tougher mid game chapters like the prison escape. It won't matter in the late game at all, since every stat is capped at 20 and the scrolls you get give you huge growth boosts if you move them around. Thracia gameplay is defined more by utility and positioning via the fun and broken warp, steal and capture mechanics, so Elite won't make the game too easy if you're worried about that.

My entry to the series is Three Houses and I love the story. Very excited for Engage release, and was very disappointed at how bad both story and characters were. Story wise which of these 2 is the exception and which of them is the norm?

Here's a recommendation you skipped out on: Fire Emblem Cipher Though its support has sadly ended, it's a fantastic TCG with intuitive and deep tactical gameplay, between deckbuilding and actual play. It's also where most FE content creators nab glorious art of the characters because it features gorgeous illustrations of almost every character in the series.

TMS is a real mixed bag, it has some of the most engaging gameplay and it is satisfying to get your whole party ganging up on demons and beating the hell out of them. The combat is just a major improvement on Persona/SMT and the music and aesthetic is peak. The black enemies are so obnoxious though; there had to be a better way than making them immune to all field attacks and having them be the same tedious enemies everytime, and they spawn constantly.

I don't remember which one was my first Fire Emblem, but I think it was FE4? - admittedly it was way back in college in the mid 2000's on a fantranslated emulator, provided by my roommate. I admit to completely bouncing off the game and not really enjoying myself. I came back later with Awakening and definitely enjoyed myself much more. Partially because I came over from Pokemon, and long convoluted chains of passing skills down for unit optimization definitely scratched that itch. I played Fates as well, but didn't enjoy it nearly as much - it was definitely as complicated for optimization, which was nice, but there was a lot less "okay, my plan of engineering the perfect soldier was a success and I can now solo the entire game with just them", so my long chains of class and skill inheritance just didn't feel like it paid off.

I legit love three hopes it's a far better combo of fe and the warriors franchise (two of my favorites) than the original fe warriors and could be a great point for people who aren't fe fans to jump into the series. I'd u like three hopes, you'll probably get into three houses very easily cause it's the same cast and story at its core. Then three houses can serve to familiarize u with the bare basic fe combat, which could catapult u into the rest of the franchise.

I started out with Awakening and then played Fates, Three Houses, and am currently playing Engage. Three Houses is definitely my favorite and one of my favorite games of all time. Awakening is probably second. I'm having a lot of fun playing Engage. I'm doing my very first Maddening run in any Fire Emblem and it is literally maddening but I've managed to survive until Chapter 12 so far. I'm very easily frustrated and so I never play games on super high difficulties but despite the numerous times I've had to retry some maps, I'm finding the Maddening Engage experience to be quite rewarding. I'm very disappointed in Engage's story, writing, and overall vibe though. I think a lot of it is just me expecting more Three Houses so the lack of branching narratives and the sheer boredom of the Somniel compared with Garreg Mach are huge disappointments for me. The story and writing I find to be really poor. It feels like fan fiction written by a teenager, honestly, and I care about none of the characters outside of their combat ability. Anyway, great video! I'm looking forward to playing some more of the games from the past and this should be a very useful guide for me.

Good to see another youtuber to have FE8 as their favourite. Will always be the best fire emblem imo and one of the best I've ever played. Gets so much hate for how easy it is but there's so many ways you can up the difficulty. From difficulty patches, benching ross and no tower of valni allowed. It started alot of the staples of all the new fire emblem.

I'd really recommend Three Hopes as well, yeah it's a "musou" or "Warriors" kind of game which is an action game where you defeat mobs of enemies but it's genuinely a fun game that still sticks the style of Fire Emblem. One strength is that the plot is an extremely different series of events, it was fun seeing some good characters in Three Houses end up behaving more evil in Three Hopes, the pacing is better because I felt Three Houses was a bit bloated, and you get more character support events too so you see even more of your favorite characters. My favorite thing about Three Hopes was the protagonist, he wasn't a generic self-insert and actually has a personality as a mercenary, Shez wasn't as provocative as Ike but you can see he's a guy who just wants to get the job done and has a good reputation as a mercenary and you even get to fight and see Byleth as a supporting character instead of the protagonist.... If you've ever played SMT4, it's similar to how SMT4: Apocalypse turned the protagonist of the original 4 into a supporting character. Fire Emblem Warriors is also a fun spinoff of Fire Emblem, it's bland unfortunately but you get to see more of your favorite Fire Emblem characters. Edit: One last thing is I like how you covered the old FE's such as 1, Gaiden and Mystery even though they have remakes as well, there's so many differences between the different versions. Technically there's also the Satellaview Fire Emblem that was made between FE 3 and 4, it's lost media, it was a Nintendo satellite service where the game would stream to your TV at designated times. I believe most of these were made into DLC or episodes for Fire Emblem New Mystery, but they're not one to one. The original satellite Fire Emblem episodes played like an audio drama and was very interesting, they went into detail for the smaller characters such as the thief stealing from a palace as well as Harden's marriage falling apart.

My stance on emulation is it's ok if you actually own the game or if there isn't an "official" way to buy the game from the company anymore. I remember saying repeatedly how shortsighted it was for Nintendo to release Revelation digital only back in the day.

Have played most of the games, only haven’t touched fe1 and new mystery. I promise I’ll finish fe11 and fe6 files that are at least two years old one day. That said I am close to finishing fe6. I just hate ch21. A lot. And fe11 is just…eh. Gaiden’s surprisingly fun tho, unfortunately you have to rlly speed it up in order to enjoy it, which bars you from its excellent soundtrack (why else would echoes OST be such a bop? Tbh ppl don’t give Yuka Tsujiyoko enough credit, she’s a great composer). Anyways if you’re loser enough to read a random ramble within the comment section of a very excellent video and channel, I leave you with this: Peepeepoopoo

But they played 6 and were more engaged and found it easier to learn because it expects you to learn stuff. And there’s always a tutorial if you’re not feeling confident.

fe8 pretty much killed it for me as well after 10 fe games. I decided to play on hard with no grinding and it became painfully difficult, not fun difficult like conquest or radiant dawn. 7 I also quit the first time around bc it was way too easy. I love 6 but the ambush spawns make it hard to recommend. I think POR or shadow dragon are the best entry points.
