I have an extra bias with this being my first Falcom game but honestly I really hope Falcom does come back and give this another look again in a possible sequel They could really improve on the flow of the combat and writing and seriously have something special here! Great video Rio! I agree and love every point you put into this video

@@arkeshn729 I already know what the original Tokyo Xanadu is, as someone who owns a physical copy of the Vita version both in Japanese and English, as well as having replayed both multiple times. Therefore, I'm not clueless about the game. There was no need for you to describe the game. All you had to say was they are working on a sequel. That said, why did it take so long for the sequel? It's been nine years, most sequels don't take that long.

I’ll always have a soft spot for this game. I remember picking it up on a whim, and being very pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it, this was my first Falcom game, and afterwards I played some of the Ys and Trails games. I came back and replayed Xanadu again a few years later and loved it even more, now being a Falcom fan and noticing all the Easter eggs and just how Falcomey this game is. Fun combat, great soundtrack, very charming. Would absolutely love a sequel someday.
@firebreather41922 жыл бұрын
This game feels a lot like a mashup of Ys and Trails, so you can't go wrong if you are a fan of those. The battle system seemed to be a prototype of the more refined Ys VIII. It's fun and the difficulty level was pretty good balanced for me. I'd be in for a successor, Falcom should generally put out some other series besides Ys and Trails again. Xanadu Next would also be an interesting candidate for a sequel.
@CommRio2 жыл бұрын
Falcom has certainly limited their potential by only doing Ys and Trails. I'm interested in Xanadu Next but that's pretty much the only Falcom game I haven't played that I'm in some way intimidated by. I'm really not sure what to expect given the variety in the reviews I've read.
@firebreather41922 жыл бұрын
@@CommRio My guess is that as game development gets more expensive Falcom don't want to take risks with other IPs which might not perform as good. I do miss the variety of mid to end 2000s Falcom before they switched from PC to handheld. Xanadu Next is quite nice. A little bit like Diablo, which is rather unusual, but with this certain Falcom DNA.

As a non-Falcom player, Tokyo Xanadu is my first Falcom game that I finished. The depth and character development rivals even Persona 4 while also being different enough to stand out on its own. So far it's the only game other than Persona that makes me care about most of the supporting cast. Whenever something happens, many will have their own lines specific to that situation. Whenever I get paired up with a companion, I enjoy the interactions that happen with their friends / relatives. They would tease, be surprised, learn new things, feel for them... Kou even became my inspiration of what makes a kind and caring individual! I feel they are a big part of why I like this game a lot. I enjoy the combat too. I play on Nightmare for my first playthrough. It's challenging enough to have you worry about resource management without getting one shot, just right up my alley.
@CommRio Жыл бұрын
Those sorts of interactions are a staple of Falcom. They create amazing worlds filled with characters that actually react and develop as the story proceeds. It's truly amazing and as you said very enjoyable for the player.

Playing this is a really good time. A shame it hasn't become a third pillar for Falcom alongside Trails and Ys, as I think it's has some great potential. The after-story seams to have left open the idea of a sequel though so maybe one day?
@CommRio2 жыл бұрын
I would hope they follow it up someday, but Falcom moves in mysterious ways sometimes. Maybe Xanadu will become a once every decade game, Xanadu Next 2005, Tokyo Xanadu 2015, next Xanadu 2025?

I have this game, I should finish it sometime. I wasn't that excited for it though because the dungeons felt very basic, just straight hallways and square rooms with either mobs or chests. The character interraction part is an interesting twist but the pacing is so different it feels like two separate games. Persona 3/4/5 is similar being a life sim / dungeon crawler but it doesn't have this issue for me so I think it's worth comparing. Persona's combat is turn based and methodical, and the life sim aspect is brief most of the time, with a lot of the plot tying in directly to the dungeon, so they end up complementing each other. Tokyo Xanadu on the other hand has long character conversations that have little to do with the greeds, followed by fast paced action dungeons. They just didn't mix well in this case. I still want to finish the game one day though.

I think there's still enough to enjoy to be worth finishing but it's certainly not as polished as Persona with gameplay formula

I’m super new to Falcom games but I have played Ys VIII, IX, Celceta, and am now working in the Trails series having literally just beat Trails in the Sky FC(and oooh boy is shit starting to get crazy!!!), and just bought every Trails game currently available in the West. And I’m really digging Falcom’s style, gameplay, and world building. So I’m looking for more Falcom games to get into. I love the Persona games and from the description of Tokyo Xanadu, it sounds like Falcom took the gameplay of Ys and combined it with the RPG and Social systems of Persona. This sounds like a game worth grabbing as something to play when I need to take a break from Trails.
