Ive listened to the first 5 books 10x. Its my current favorite series. Matt only charges 3 dollars on his patreon to read the next books chapters as he writes them. Also we get to vote on stuff that actually ends up in the story! Most recently, we got to name a new character

and yes... the way they made the audio in this one is outstanding. always a bonus whn narrators can somehow add to the book experience for the listener. other narrators that i really think makes a difference : Steven Pacey (Firstlaw series). Christian Rodska (Powder mage) 1-5 Rob Inglis (hobit, Lotr). can also recommend Michael Kramer and Kate Reading in the Eye of the world / Wheel of time series.

Dude can’t agree more!!! Dungeon Crawler Carl is my favorite series. Currently on my third listen through. I keep hearing new details I missed on the first listen through and how things better connect in later books. Also Jeff Hayes is such an amazing narrator. He just makes the characters come alive that elevates this series so much more.

Dungeon Crawler Carl was my gateway series into LitRPG, a genre that I did not know existed or that I would need. If you like the over arching premise, the Noobtown series by Ryan Rimmel is also really very good. If you don't care about ever having your life back, The Wandering Inn series by pirateaba is available to read for free online. It currently sits at Volume 9 online (volume number is meaningless: the author writes 30k word chapters, this volume is already at 64+).

Agree! I just finished the 6th audio book last night. Fantastic series. A major point you didn't explicitly state is that Princess Donut becomes fully sapient and gains status as a dungeon crawler herself. That happens very early in the first book, so it is not really a spoiler. Heck, a casually glanced at any of the covers pretty much illustrates the point.

I love this series. I’m on book 5 of my re-read for book 6. I know you touched on it a little bit, but I think one of the things that makes this series for me is the darkness. I know it might not be as crazy as some of the other fantasy series, but it’s why I like old Christopher Titus. He’d have you laughing hilariously and then make you feel bad about it. Then run you through it again. If you read Matt’s other stuff, it’s good, but not DCC good. It’s very dark, though. The comedy and action create a skim over the darkness that make it very palatable. As you mentioned, these little glimpses into their past keep building and bring out emotions. There are several moments in the series that have brought a tear to my eye. I think the series that gets recommend more than this one is Will Wight’s “Cradle”. It’s great and just recently finished. He’s started a new series about a wizard in space, with guns.😁

I have a friend that had been recommending these books for years. I always put it off because the covers reminded me of a young teen literature series and the length of the books had me thinking there couldn't be much substance there. I was sooooo wrong I'm in book 3 right now and I'm hooked as well. Princess Doughnut grows on you.

DCC Is lit rpg only by the loosest of definitions... And most of the things it is missing, like respawns, are the things that I really don't like about the genre. Like you, once I discovered it, I became obsessed. The game elements are like a mask that hides the toll that the characters are paying, both physically and mentally... And every once in a while, Matt pulls that mask away and you can see the reality of their situation. My good man, any time you wish to have a discussion about the book series, my doors always open. I am also glad that you are listening to it. Without getting into spoilers, book six has some perks that dead tree people won't get.

The audiobook is extremely well done too with Jeff Hayes doing an astounding job. I actually discovered this series because it was given a fourth wall breaking shout out in another audiobook series I enjoy - The Shadow Master, which you might also enjoy since you seem to like comedy.
