It feels like a series that could both be lots of peoples favorite or among their favorite series, while also having mass appeal just do to rhe number of boxes it checks. I feel like it has to explode in popularity at some point

I can say that I will definitely read The Sun Eater before I pick up Dune 🙂 (though of course Dune is on my TBR) I’m currently reading WoT as my ‘tome read’, and sprinkling shorter books like Dresden and Vorkosigan in between, but when I need a break from fantasy I plan to pick up Sun Eater.

Every time you talk about Empire of Silence either on KZbin or Discord I want to push it up the TBR! I'm a bit torn: Do I read the major influences beforehand (i.e. mainly Dune + BotNS) or jump straight to EoS?! The FOMO is real. Great video, and I appreciated the sections split!

Just read the preview of the first 5 chapters of «Empire of Silence», were I caught: Jadd: The Jaddite Faith from several Guy Gavriel Kay novels (GGK’s mix of Christian Trappings and the Sun Cults from Antiquity: Unsurprising given Ruocchio have stated himself as a fan of GGK, with signed books by him) & Jeddah, an Ancient Port City in Modern Day Saudi Arabia Birth Vats for the Nobility: «Brave New World» by Aldous Huxley Hadrian’s home planet of Delos: Greek Island, Holy Site for the worship of Apollo and Artemis and the Athenian-led Delian League which fought Sparta in the Peloponnesian War of the 5th Century BC + The Name of the Mega-Corporation running the parks in «Westworld» Hadrian’s brother Crispin: The St. Crispin’s Day Speech from «Henry V» The Alien Antagonists, the Cielcin: Ciel (French: Sky) + sin (Mr. Ruocchio is Catholic, alright! 😄) Lothrian: Have some similar language structure as the Free City of Lorath from GRRM’s «ASOIAF» + Lotharingia/Lorraine in Modern Day France Hadrian’s family name Marlowe and their Devil Symbol: Christopher Marlowe wrote «Doctor Faustus», about the eponymous scholar who make a pact with the devil Mephistopheles (+ a reversed color scheme of the Manchester United Devil Logo, given the Marlowes’ English Ancestry?) @@jakebishop7822 Also, I didn’t want to cheat and mention the Mythical Figure Cid Arthur as a mix of Siddhartha (Buddha) and King Arthur due to the Empire being primarily a mix of British and Indian Culture, since that was something that straight away made me put the series on my TBR List, when Mr. Ruocchio mentioned it in his interview with «Talking Story»! 😄

Sun Eater is my favourite current series! I've read Empire of Silence and Howling Dark, and loved both of them! Can't wait to start Demon in White and for Kingdoms of Death to come out in March!

Demon In White is incredible. I actually think DiW is more of an improvement on HD then HD is on EoS. Although it's close, and all 3 are fantastic

Sun Eater is the #1 series for me to read in 2021. I’m not a big fan of sci-fi (the only sci-fi franchise I’ve really got into is the mass effect games) but this sounds like something I’ll really enjoy.

I really regret starting this when I did. I thought to just read a few chapters a night while slowing on malazan before midterms. Ended up blasting through the first 3 in a day a piece. I was pretty sure I was going to like Christopher's writing from his interviews but this is definitely my favorite Sci fi series, don't mind the recency bias of having completed DIW last night.

Do you know if anyone else is still having problems with the audible jake? I know there was some recording issue that pushed it back to the 24th but I'm still not able to order unfortunately.

I know some people who have started it or finished it on audio. Even though it was delayed. I think there might be an issue with UK audible? If you are over in Europe try using a VPN to make audible think you are in North America. In general since I don't tend to listen to audiobooks I might be the wrong person to ask, but that is what I would try

Ok Jake, no pressure, but have a question. I'm roughly 60% through Memories of Ice, attempting like mad to catch up to Mike's Malazan read along. That said, do I go House of Chains next, or start Empire of Silence. That said, I also have Dune staring at me across the room begging me to pick it up, and Hyperion. None of these appear to be "quick" reads so I need some prodding as to which one to That said, I may just have to go Malazan. I feel like in the last 50 pages of MoI so much shit happened and I have zero idea what's going on. It's roughly at the end of the siege of Capustan where Itkovian does some crazy shit, Gruntle is there, Quick Ben is doing Quick Ben stuff, the Barghast, and so on and so on. It's my first Malazan read so I'm clueless and I want answers so that might just force my hand into House of Chains anyway. Great review, can't wait to get to it, but you see my dilemma

that is kinda a tough one I personally binged MBOTF, but I have been told by people that's crazy. I will say if you tend to get burnt out on series start Empire of Silence, if you don't go forward on the MBOTF train

It looks like it will be a 6 book series. Ruocchio is pretty fast, so will probably be done in late 2023 or early 2024

How would you compare it to Red Rising. Morning Star is one of my favorite books.

A few differences. 1. The Setting is way larger, instead of being solar system spanning it's galaxy spanning. 2. Not as much action, like not even close. Still a decent amount, but Red Rising has a lot of action. 3. There is a lot of alien life. 4. I think in Red Rising the supporting cast shines more, where in Sun Eater more of the appeal comes from Hadrian's character. 5. I think Ruocchio is just a better prose writer. by quite a lot. No offense intended to Pierce Brown, that is true for almost everyone. 6. Red Rising I think explores basic themes very well, Sun Eater tackles more stuff, like Tranhumanism as a random example. 7. Sun Eater is weirder. There weren't any chapters in Red Rising that made me just go like......"what the crap is going on?"(in a good way)
