I saw a vid where they said not to worry about composting or burying plants with powdery mildew. Their argument is that your soil already has this in it. Any comments?

Yes, all soils have it.

Put science up to it, and mulch becomes something to be thought about and used with purpose, so as not to make more trouble for yourself. And thanks for the introduction of the term heaving. I used to think of it as freeze-thaw, and that it applied more to structures like decks and driveways than (who knew!) younger plants. Learn something here every time you post, Ashley. Thank you!

I used barley straw & this year had wonderful barley growing in my urban garden & the deer love it. It’s also easy to pull out if I wanted to get rid of it. It kept my perennials cozy for the winter, especially the strawberries!

Pine shavings for pets is better mulch imo. The sad reality of powdery mildew is its a soil born fungus. 99.99% of soils have it. Removing anything who was contaminated by it and destroying it is just a psychological relief than anything else

I tried mulching with leaves last year and this spring I was greeted with hundreds of maple trees. Apparently there were a lot of keys mixed in with the leaves.

We always get dozens of baby poplar trees in the summer in our gardens, those tap roots can be pretty crazy!

Thank you. I am pretty sure I created my own bug problem, thick layer of mulch too early. They lived happily thru my zone 5-6 winter. I have been working at😢 mulching now.

I cover my beds with landscape cloth after preparing the bed for spring. Two pluses include no pest digging and water retention

I have tarnished plant bug and they are a misery! This year I have been really cleaning my garden in hopes that it will help cut down the numbers this winter! Removing debris is the opposite of what I have been doing the last few years!

Thanks for the idea to mulch my potted perennials. Voles here are awful, so I've moved many perennials to pots and containers this year.

Thanks Ashley. You made a comment about using poly covered in a previous video. I would like to watch. I have some areas with obnoxious weeds I am trying to clear so I can put in a raised bed. Landscapers cloth has had limited success ( partially due to squirrels and raccoons) so this might be better -- perhaps black poly?

Question: I just put pine shavings around my newly planted raspberry plants. Should I keep the shavings away from the stems of the plants? Enjoyed, take care!

I wish I would have known this sooner. My mulch cause my heavy pest problems this year apparently

What are your thoughts on using fallen pine needles as mulch to cover garden in winter?
@AraesStuff Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking it may change the ph meaning availability of nutrients for plantsm. Interested to hear others thoughts. I put a mix of woodchips and pine needles I get for free from my local arborist in the paths of all my beds. I did have a bad mildew year this year so maybe I should reconsider.

I recently heard of flax shives for mulch, has anyone tried it? I saw that it can also be mixed into soil?

Thanks again Ashley. Guess the next week is going to be used for cleaning up and making the garden ready for winter here in Norway as well. Actually had few snowflakes drop down yesterday, so yeah.. It's that time..
