seeing players you deem better than yourself make mistakes is one of the most liberating feelings.

We all do make mistakes, the level where we play well with little to no mistake just go up, when we try to play above the comfort zone, however high is it, we ALL make mistakes or just struggle with it until we get better ;D

This is the inherent danger of social media across all genres and platforms. We're exposed to only the best or most flattering examples of playing, or fitness, or lifestyle, or whatever. It can be crippling for the confidence of the audience who doesn't see their lives living up to the impossible example, and it can be crippling to the artists who feel they need to show only the "perfect take" in their socials. Great video.

This is the most honest take on playing Guitar that I have heard. Respect to you Ross for sharing this! My playing is littered with mistakes, especially on a bad day...but I am learning not to worry...thanks buddy!👍

That's the thing I always wonder, there are so many phenomenal guitarists on social media posting amazing clips but how many takes did it take to get it perfect? And seeing these can sometimes shake your confidence and make you doubt your own ability. It's much more enjoyable to just play and see where the music takes you than get a "perfect take". Like you pointed out, we're all human.

mistakes ? ha , my music is loaded with mistakes, but usually they will blend in or if they dont it just adds character to the chord changes and its like huh ? what was that.. i agree with you 100% , musicians are very complicated humans at times and see the world a little different than others, but it is the horrors of the social media platforms that pressure us into wanting to be perfect......

As with all relationships, people develop an impression of you over time. You don't want to be late to your first band rehearsal, but if it happens somewhere down the road, you want to be given the same kind of grace you give to others.

Ive been playing for 50 years, Self Taught .. I posted my Latest video 'The Final Countdown' (Europe {Solo} ) ..... Its NOT 100% at all ! .. But i dont mind leaving in a few 'Greenies' as Mark Knopfler calls them ... I also now think its a bit more 'Humanised' than playing it 100% Like record ..I just do about 3 takes and choose the 'Best' version ... otherwise id drive myself Mad Dont get me wrong, I try and play it best i can, and satisfactory to myself ... But i dont get het up about a few little errors these days ! Keep up the Great Channel !

Any good honest advice for the novice guitar player or intermediate player is always helpful. It's refreshing to hear this from someone who plays at a high level . Everyone's constantly learning guitar even the likes of Steve Vai. I'm subbed and got your courses and just working through that. When is the bullet proof guitar courses 1 &2 back. Looking forward to this. Cheers again for all the content you put out.

Very useful content! I would love to hear from you how to overcome the frustration of errors while practicing. Very often while practicing I get very nervous when I do mistakes and the whole session becomes useless, as I tend to stop it.

Novel idea i must say, Rory Gallagher at times left a mistake on a recorded album because he liked the spirit in which it was played, mistakes are part of life, nothing to be ashamed of whether you play guitar or not. I'll be interested to see how this develops, really nice idea, good luck to you !

Hitting that record button is daunting. I find it makes you overthink things and thought is the enemy of flow ( Vinny Colaiuta quote). However, like Ross says, what you think are mistakes are often your personality traits. Listening back to yourself can be uncomfortable in the same manner as most of us don’t like the sound of our voices when we hear them. When I listen to my playing from a recording, I imagine that I am in a bar watching and listening to someone else and it can change your perception. Do be too hard on yourselves.

Let me just say that you are a phenomenal guitar player and I would say one that I respect very much. Your propensity for perfection is part of what got you to the level you are as a player, but we are all human and should keep it healthy in our pursuit.

Try singing! How these vocalists back in the day were able to do perfect takes to tape were remarkable really, we did a recording at Visconti Studios this year, which is all analogue gear, all to 24 track tape, no overdubs, it is not fun! Im old, so done it before but was twitchy bum time for other band members!

Hi Ross, as someone who's been playing for 50 years you're an excellent guitarist and teacher. Take a look at some old Jimmy Page performances, some are cringe worthy! but he's an excellent player! Cheers Stephen from Scotland

A good honest video. Not often you see this. How many hours a day do you practice?
@RossCampbellGuitarist Жыл бұрын
These days I don't really practice much. I just pick up and play what I want to play and when I feel like it. Back in my uni days I'd practice as much as the day allowed. Sometimes that was 15 minutes on a lunch break from work, other days it was north of 8hrs. But please don't take any of that as advice!

Thank you for the great video! 300 takes and editing the hell out of it is not what I want to hear. I like it when it is real. Best when it is recorded with a phone. I would never do more than a couple of takes. And all the mistakes have character.
@ourclarioncall Жыл бұрын
I thought it would be quite fun to film and uploading something like a 30 minute one take , no deleting , improvisation that is intended to push the boat out so far my feet can’t touch the bottom . Intentionally trying to create new ideas on the spot , pushing speed and technique purposely to the point of failure. In doing that there will be plenty of mistakes but also the excitement of birthing something fresh , exciting , spontaneous and technically beyond my normal comfort zone Viewers get to see it all. The real person , the real skill level , full transparency, encouragement to be free to fail (which I really a position of success ) and not have the burden of trying to perform or impress , yet at the same time , performing and impressing
@javisantiago1781 Жыл бұрын
and that goes to...??? say names!! 😜 I'm curious about KZbinrs' live performances or just improvising with other musicians. I'm always wondering how do you guys react against a random groove set by unknown players.

My baseline for even liking a guitarist is if I can hear their mistakes live or not If i can’t hear you take a risk why am I listening to you at all I love Buddy guy, brother Wayne Kramer, Jimmy page, Albert Ayler, Kurt cobain, Kanye west, they all “make mistakes” publically

I am no pro at all, i’m just an amateur that started in its 30s, and i’m 5 years in the journey. So why is this relevant to me? Because sometimes i wish to share something, but my takes are always so flawed that I just can’t. At least now i know it’s not just me (with the due proportions of course)
