Alcohol is obvious a very popular drink that many people turn to for many different reasons. Putting aside the serious issues regarding alcohol like health damage, DUIs, alcoholism and alcoholics, and the financial cost, what is an effect of alcohol that happens almost universally when drinking? One might point out that a numbness takes place. This numbing is of your emotions, your senses, and possibly yourself. In this video, we look at Friedrich Nietzsche’s thoughts on alcohol that he talks about in his book Ecce Homo and Twilight Of The Idols. Here, we might be able to find a philosophical justification for one to stop drinking.

Alcohol usage is for a social reason. It's not very smart, but we use it to make social interactions more easy. And for sex, of course.

I burst out laughing 5:20 hahaha. Great video man, I was introduced to alcohol purely by friends as well lol. It is quite eye-opening that every-time I hang out I have to drink, if I proposed the contrary I'd be the crazy one. Plus as you say, it hinders actual self-expression plus you depend on alcohol for "opening up", that can be terrible in many situations of your life: job, marriage, etc. I understand Nietzsche in this sense and actually have started something similar a little over a year ago, but with abstaining from soft drinks lol. I came to then like sparkling water, which I hated before. On alcohol, I don't have the same restrictions as Nietzsche - I think you should indulge in some once in a while, that's the aesthetic part of living. I find it curious that he loves the Dionysian spirit, but not the spirit (pun intended). Plus beer in moderation actually has health benefits, I think at least. Enjoying the vids!

Yeah a casual drink here and there doesnt hurt much, especially when its just a little and your hanging with friends.

I struggle with alcohol. I have such wonderful time with my close friend when I have a few beers. Yes, we can work on removing the barriers to expression in sober ways. But can’t it be done in parallel? I have a sober close friend that I do sober talk. And I have an intoxicated friend that I intoxicate myself to match his wavelength. I don’t know what I’m losing. Although intuitively I feel I’m on the wrong path with alcohol.

Great video and I wholesomely agree with Nietzsche on this topic. My family sells alcohol and seeing people ruining their lives and livers in the name of addiction disguised as "social norm" taught me a lot.

Great video! Personally, I see alcohol (or drugs in general) as an unhealthy form of escape, or in worse situations, a catalyst for really bad actions and decisions. Drinking, even in moderation, feeds into its social acceptance, and social use tends to be the starting point for people abusing alcohol (at least from what I have seen).

I stopped drinking 2 years ago after the large amounts I was having was giving me severe anxiety, I had urges in the first 1-2 months of quitting but once I realized that I only drank because I was unhappy, I sorted my life out and have never had any urges since. Alcohol is a poison that will kill your spirit gradually

Sometimes, no matter how much you know how destructive it may be, the drive to stick a bandaid over a leaking dam prevails. You can see yourself do it, but you're so numb you don't care anymore. That may be a projection of my own personal flaws and addictive personality than booze in general however. I want to say though this vid has come up at appropriate time to remind me it's a short term option with more drawbacks than positives. Hope I can kick this shit, it's terrifying how normalised this crap is. Seeing this has made me feel a bit better today and reminded me I have personal autonomy. Sorry about my drunken writings but I suppose I want to say thanks for posting this, and did subscribe lol. Also, fentamins cola. I urge you to try it. Good with vodka or without :)

Great video, my family of origin has always relied on one or the other of the substances Nietzsche writes about, mostly Christianity, but those like me, who kinda had their fill of the "fairy tale" about Jesus, etc., had to find an alternative, mine... well, drugs and alcohol of course! As I've gotten older I put away the drugs, finally, after some bad experiences but alcohol...well, that's the kicker. After several consecutive years of less than desirable lab tests and the Dr. scheduling yet one more liver ultrasound (I've already been diagnosed with fatty liver) I've decided the time has come to lay it down too and once and for all and clear the cobwebs from the cerebellum. This is the day I've always dreaded because I knew the day would come when the Dr. says, do it or destroy your liver! Bill W., here I come again.

I don't find drinking to be numbing as I find drinking ( I only do beer and wine) to be a relaxing process. Yes, I can relax soaking in a tub too but this is a relaxing, sip a taste of good wine/beer and watch the world go by and just observe. Chill out time
@sophist7070
@sophist7070 Жыл бұрын
Still you are drinking to mask a problem. The problem being: you cannot sit and watch the world go by and just observer & experience chill out feelings. So here comes the alcohol, giving you an easy fix. Now next time you are doing a hike, reach the top of the mountain & can't relaxe because you figure it's a perfect time to drink a good beer. So now you sit around for a few minutes, fiddle with the rocks a bit to distract yourself. And then hurry back down to get that beer that you deserve. Horrible way to live. Been there, done that. Nothing but missed opportunities.
