Hey wonderful humans!
Today's video is all about twitter, specifically academic twitter and why you should use it! As a PhD student there are a bunch of reasons you should use twitter but these are just my top five.
--------------
My name's Lucy and I'm a humanities student focusing on queer romance novels of 21st century, so obviously this won't be the same as science people. Also everything I say is my own opinion! If you have any questions about PhD life or studying at UoB feel free to leave a comment or contact me on social media.

This was so useful Lucy... I’d love if you could do another video on how to use Twitter as a masters/PhD student.

Hey Lucy, Great content! Thanks for sharing! By the way, I just heared the news that I have been offered a scholarship for a joint phd program in Queensland Uni-Exeter Uni., and seeing these videos can help you make a better sense of it all. So Thanks! Kindly, I'm also interested to know your thoughts about Researchgate, LinkedIn, Academia, etc. Perhaps it's good to do a video on them :) Again, fantastic job and keep up the great work. Best.

Firstly congratulations on the scholarship! I’m glad my videos have helped make the whole thing easier 😊 I’ll be honest I haven’t use ResearchGate or Academia.Edu so wouldn’t feel right doing a video on them at the moment. Maybe later down the line if I start using them!

@@LucyHargrave Thanks Lucy! To some extend I feel they can do the same thing that you so nicely covered about Tweeter, In terms of creating a network, getting your publications out there, getting academic followers and finding followers of your own. So, personally, I highly recommend them, especially RG! let me know what you think if you tried them down the line. Take care and stay safe.

Once, I used Twitter professionally, but at some point in time, I lost the balance between personal stuff and academic matter. So, I decided to deactivate my Twitter account and planning to start a new account before starting my Ph.D. program. Thanks for your tips.

We’re all been there, my current Twitter is a new one for my PhD!

My current Twitter account is more personal and I engage in a lot of trending topics especially with the recent protests and instability in my country. Do you think I should open another one for academia and networking or refine my current one

I don’t think you need to make a whole separate one, it isn’t a bad thing to show your personality and interests! You might want to tidy it up and remove anything you wouldn’t be comfortable being asked on in an interview or by a future colleague ☺️ A lot of the academics I follow post about political things, it’s just about doing it in an informed way. If you aren’t comfortable discussing politics on a platform that will be viewed by people you work with then make a new ‘professional’ one and make your current one private.

How are you able to find these people, academics, conferences?
@LucyHargrave
@LucyHargrave 3 жыл бұрын
So I started by following people I knew in my field (my supervisors, prominent academics, other PhD students in my department). After that look of their follower lists for relevant people and then just keep doing that. As you follow more people conference deadline/call for papers will start appearing in your timeline.
