I was blessed by having my first meeting with Firefly be on DVD. I was at a sleepover where everyone was asleep and I was suffering insomnia, so my friend gave me his headphones and laptop and said to knock myself out on his film and series collection. I put Firefly on knowing NOTHING about it and at first I thought the headphones were broken because there was no sound... and then people started speaking and I realised that in this show, there was no sound in space. And that was the precise moment I fell in love with this show. Everything else was just a lovely bonus.

@@MrDougmartin Huh, interesting. All the women in my group of friends, including myself, love science fiction. Well...GOOD science fiction. Ones with an actual story at least. It was my friend Sarah who introduced me to Babylon 5 back in the 90's, for example. We all have watched all of Firefly, Doctor Who, my mother is an avid Trekkie, we've all love...well...most of the Star Wars movies (may the prequels burn in hell, amen), etc. Hell, we even love sci-fi sitcoms like Red Dwarf, which has some oddly unique concepts in it for being a half hour sitcom. Which could explain why it's been going on and off since 1988 and is still going today. "Women don't understand science fiction," is quite a bit of bullshit. Sexist bullshit, even. To be honest, the bit that made *me* pause was the "western" part, but the fact that it was also science fiction intrigued me. And yet that doesn't mean I don't UNDERSTAND westerns. I understand them just fine. Women aren't too stupid to understand whole genres, as you suggest.

Firefly means more to me that just an amazing show with awesome characters. Story time... I first watched it on dvd in 2004/2005, after walking into the back room of the department I worked at. Two guys were exchanging the dvd set; this is what we did back then as we were stationed overseas and didn’t have our version of regular tv. I asked what the set was and they both said “Firefly”. I, of course, asked what it was about. One of them replied that it was a sci-fi western. I must have looked confused because he just handed me the set and said to just watch it all, and then I’ll understand. I didn’t protest even after looking at the cover and thinking “definitely sci-fi western because of the spaceship and western type looking clothes. That night I watched nearly every single episode. I couldn’t stop and was so drained for work the next day. I had the comfort of watching the series in order, so I was hooked with the pilot episode Serenity. I don’t think I have ever fallen in love with a show before so hard that I was absolutely confused as to why the series was cancelled (one of the guys soon explained to me about FOX and airing the episodes out of order). From that point on, I was a browncoat. I knew the movie was coming out and even convinced a couple friends to watch the series before seeing the movie. They were hooked as well. But Firefly means more to me because it helped me break out of my shell with being more public when it came to expressing my “geekdom”. When I was a teen, it wasn’t really acceptable to read comics or be into things considered “too nerdy” (rpg games and etc). After watching Firefly, I wanted to quote the show all the time and wear a Jayne beanie. Which I did end up doing; I even have a Blue Sun T-shirt. So the series certainly helped me not care what others thought or said when I would geek-out about things that are usually left unsaid. In others words... you can’t take the sky from me. ^_^
@hciapetus12515 жыл бұрын
GiRayne - I have a tendency to ramble too! Lol. So you’re definitely okay with me with your reply. In fact, I really enjoyed reading it. I love your experience with Firefly and what you said about the culture of us fans, and also with Joss Whedon. You mentioned Mickey with a link. Haven’t clicked the link yet, but if it’s Movies with Mickey... I love that Serenity video he did! I agree with everyone who says that Firefly succeeded because it failed both as a tv series and movie. You and I are products of the word-of-mouth phenomenon that occurred after the show was cancelled. And it’s still continuing to this day; while it’s at a slower rate, it’s still going on. There’s something special about that and it means something to some of our cultures. To further my profound experience with Firefly, just for you... I was a teen in the 90’s and living in the Midwest Bible Belt; and while it’s not a bad area to live in, some of the people can be judgmental and get away with being openly cruel without much consequence. So, back then comic movies were okay to watch, but if you read comics, you were weird and considered a cliche nerd or geek. I was lower class and while I had no problem standing up to those who made fun of me or my friends, I didn’t want to always be in trouble and getting detention for telling them to “f-ck off” every time they felt the need to bully. My friends knew I was a huge Superman fan and was never judged by them, it was enough for me as a teen. Now saying that I was a teen during that time and a huge Firefly fan, you might be surprised that I was never a Buffy fan when it aired. Lol. I watched a couple episodes and had a problem not comparing Buffy to the teens that gave me and my friends a hard time in school. But don’t worry, I ended up falling in love with Buffy (and Angel, there’s a story there too lol) in my mid-20’s. One of my friends got me to watch Buffy by watching the first seasons with me. Like how this channel does, he explained that you need to get passed the first season and observe the characters, just like I had done with Firefly. So as you can tell, Firefly was my introduction to the Whedon-verse as well. And I’m actually glad it was because of my past and mindset at the time. Firefly helped get me passed my pretentiousness and see that a lot of people are okay with letting your geek flag wave and fly. *** Dollhouse! I loved that series. While I was disappointed the series was also cancelled, I could actually understand why not as many people could get into the show. It’s one of the few shows that I believe was “before its time”; I know that phrase is thrown around a lot, but with Dollhouse, there’s truth to it. The concept of “dolls” is more viewed as prostitution rather than the hints of “Manchurian Candidate” the show had. It wouldn’t have been until later in the decade that more people were willing to be okay with both concepts and the latter’s real conspiracy. Plus, there’s the whole “evil corporation” theme that’s been around for a long time, but with the prostitution theme, it was overshadowed in people’s minds who couldn’t get passed it. ^^^this is from personal experience with the people I know who couldn’t get into Dollhouse until way later, after it was cancelled. I agree with you about how the fans were divided with Dollhouse. There’s the surface with the concepts and cast, then there’s the deep and disturbing concepts. It was a truly bleak storyline, and if one couldn’t get passed that, they couldn’t see the hope that was there. I mention the cast because I noticed something with those who couldn’t get into the series... Eliza Dushku. I personally couldn’t see anyone else playing Echo, but there were times that she alone couldn’t carry the series as the leading protagonist and character; and the other characters were what held the interests but didn’t get enough spotlight to get passed the idea that Echo is the lead. *** Moving passed all that... lol I’m with you about going to the movies. When I was younger, I didn’t mind not knowing if I would like a movie or not to watch it in the theaters. However, now, I see the worth of my money and don’t want to waste it. I go to MCU movies that I know I will at least have a good time seeing; for example, I didn’t see all the Iron Man movies in theaters because I’m not a huge Iron Man fan, and I probably won’t ever see Captain Marvel because the ones times I was interested in her character was when she was known as Ms Marvel and Rogue took her powers. Lol. Seeing Star Wars movies in theaters is a different thing for me though, it’s a family event. Doesn’t matter if the movie sucks, my sister and I would ramble about why it sucked and what was good about it right after the movie was over. Other than that, I don’t go to the movies often. Even DC movies are iffy for me. =p *** Sorry for the long reply. I have the day off and wanted to reply to you before I started my adult chores and errands. Lol.

She wants to start a movement to bring the show back, to contact the creators of the show, to contact the networks and get people to stand up and fight to bring the show back. "Sorry babe, it's all been done already." She wrote about it in class, and found out one of her teachers plays in a band that has their own version of the intro song. The thing about that is, when a corporation has a growth spurt like that, you get a lot of 'supervisors' wishing to make their mark. & the only things they can make it on is other people's work. "If all you have is a hammer the whole world looks like nails." Christopher Titus ran into this exact thing. Admittedly, he was in a bad place at the time & handled it about as badly as possible. But I don't think that this would have made a difference. I mean what did any FOX exec gain from screwing Firefly? It was just a nail they wanted to hammer & I guess the thought of being able to boss around the newest hot-shot was too tempting for someone. Also, being able to throw company $ down the toilet. I mean, that's like cocaine to them. Forbidden cocaine.

Cancelling this show is one of the greatest injustices of TV, Sci-fi and amazing stories and characters. Especially the characters.

A mate of mine described it as a western. In space. But BETTER! I avoided it like the plague for a couple of years due to that alone. But gave it a shot and absolutely loved it. Pure genius from Mr Whedon (and co).

And of course make sure you watch it in the correct order. [Wrote this before I watched the video]. Edit, yep mentioned.

My Trek/I.T./nerd buddy knew I had not watched t.v. since Brisco County Jr. He knew I enjoyed my westerns, so he sat me down for the series. I made sure I was there every week. He also introduced me to Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog

Browncoats forever! Yep, a pox in every single executive at Fox involved in "Firefly's" demise. A genuine gem in the morass of scripted network television. Much mahalos for featuring the series. Stay shiny, y'all!

I watch this show like once a year, and can pretty much recite all the dialogue from memory. Still absolutely love it.

I have some mild criticism, but I don't want it to overshadow how wonderful I think this video is. I loved it, best one so far. Having put this criticism in the correct perspective: I found the American Civil War part was a bit protracted. I'm from outside of the US, and that may be a big part of it, but to me a quick "nah, not really" + the Solo comparison would have been enough. Again, shiny stuff. Can't wait for your review and analysis of the show (but I will :))

The show runners did an excellent job on this one. Developed very interesting characters and the world building is quite sophisticated, and really portrayed the different relationships very well. Would love to see more... if only season 2 was coming

Brings back memories of good times, seen the show for the first time, the movie playing firefly larp's, reading the comics meeting the cast....... Good thing Netflix has it, then again I also have the Dvd's as I need to be able to see it at least once every year to keep it fresh in the mind.

I saw the "Serenity" movie on opening day in the treatre, without knowing that there was a television series. I has no clue what I was in for. Packed theatre full of people all over reacting to character introductions. Took a bit to realise that I i happened upon something special, already in the works. Loved the movie; ran out and bought the series on DVD, and finally understood the favor and emotion I was a part of. Greatest show in the 'verse!

Why would FOX ever want to cancel a show that shows outlaws living off the grid and sticking it to the man in a gloriously sympathetic light?

Josh was a genius, he took Gunsmoke ( a very popular show in the 60s for those too young to know) and made the western a space opera. I've watched this show a thousand times and still love it. Fox were a idiots for canceling it.

I found Serenity on Netflix. I watched through the rescue at the beginning, and then got on my phone for some reason to look it up. I found that it followed a show, which chronologically took place right after where I stopped the movie. I was hooked instantly by something I'd never heard of. Now I just need a Jane shirt to go with my cunning Jane hat.

The difference is that Firefly didn't burn out, and it didn't collapse under it's own weight. It was murdered before it even had a chance to start telling it's story. And for the record: I'm not exactly a Whedon fanboy.

You know, I think the reason I haven't gotten around to Firefly is because I know I'll love it, and I know it'll hurt that there isn't more. This is making me realise that maybe that pain is still worth it.
@mschrisfrank24205 жыл бұрын
My dad doesn’t like sci-fi and my mom doesn’t like westerns, but they both loved the show. Also, I know not everyone is into comics, but the Firefly/Serenity comics are so good and come in short bursts.
