Why you should watch The West Wing

Just thought I'd make a quick teaser for The West Wing. It's a slightly edited-down version of the intro to the Season 2 episode "Bad Moon Rising."
Now, you might be wondering "who doesn't know about the West Wing being the greatest show on earth?" Yeah, I know it's a stretch, but how else would you explain that people voluntarily subject themselves to the mindless, agonizing torture that passes for "entertainment" now that Sorkin is off the air?
Please get him doing a new show. He's the reason TV was invented.

Well that's a bit strange that he would just start talking about a gavel given to his father by former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis and then subsequently mention that his dictaphone gets stuck on record and won't stop recording things. Where is this all going? Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Definitely have to have a big rivalry with Gage Whitney. I've wondered before why Sorkin hasn't written a legal series, considering he made the greatest legal drama ever ("You can't handle the truth!") and The Social Network is framed around two depositions. Maybe because it's been done so many times before.

I'm a Full on Republican and I've watched all 7 seasons 10 ? times and all back to back. sometimes all day and all night. I still laugh at the same jokes like I've never heard them before. it's my favorite show and there will never be another one like it. you'll learn alot of things about daily operations of government watching this show. couldn't have a better cast of characters. some very very funny stuff in it. if I was younger I would get an education in Politics because of this show.

I've always wondered what kind of case he thought should have been about protecting citizens from unlawful search and seizure (4th amendment) but his staff thought was about: A) not quartering soldiers in your home against you will (3rd amendment), B) the right to an attorney in civil disputes over $20 (7th amendment), and C) the inability of the U.S. courts to hear cases and make decisions against a state if it is sued by a citizen who lives in another state or a person who lives in another country. (11th amendment). Because that case sounds fascinating!!!

well obviously a national guard of one state has been posted to live in a civilians house in a second state, found the weed stash in said civilians house, and seized it and all other items of monetary value to prevent the civilian from obtaining further illicit substances. The civilian is suing both the first state and the military members for the damages, and whilst it is easily proven beyond reasonable doubt that the 3rd, 7th and 11th amendments have not been broken, Babbish believes that an argument could be made on the grounds of the fourth and believes that all energy should be spent focusing on that, where his staff focused on the other aspects. I am not a lawyer, nor do I live in America, but I spent all of five minutes googling and so am obviously an expert and should be trusted.

Fun-fact: That ending was improvised. It was initially just to have Oliver say,”I see.” He then yells to his side to cancel his flight. When the aide asks when he wants to reschedule it he yells back,”I have no idea.” He was then going to throw the gavel across the room. In one take Platt destroyed a prop dictaphone and the entire production crew found it too funny and they ordered one which could break apart easily. Made up, but a cool though.

My main one was when CJ takes about mandatory minimum prison sentencing. She said crack gets you more time than power coke even if weights are equal. Crack is predominantly used by black people while powder is mostly white people. She said this disparity is racist and unfair….black people drug gets you more time than white people drug even if they’re equal weights. However Crystal meth is predominantly used by white people and has the same mandatory minimum as Crack. Also the laws around crack being so harsh is actually because black citizens protested their local black council to crack down on in (no pun intended) because they could see they and they families were the victims of it. I love TWW while being a conservative, this scene stands out because it’s the only time I recall that a left wing argument was challenged by somebody in the case like ainsley would defend the republican side at moments like this. Or when CJ confronted Nancy mcnally about selling guns to qumar. This argument is false and it went uncorrected or even questioned.

Oliver Platt was AWESOME in this role!! GREAT SCENE-STEALER, in the company of OTHER great scene-stealers, like Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Wilford Brimley, etc.

It's about words ... this show is always about words; and how smart the writing is and the acting is and how fast smart people can back and forth with ... words .. Now that's damn sexy. And there's never been another show like this; others have tried .. but look at these people play with words .. _I'm crying here_

Agree... greatest drama ever in history... and I'm an enormous fan of SFU and Sopranos, which are also brilliant. What a great time it was to be a tv fan.

Gold - such a brilliant show, and this scene encapsulates the West Wing - fast paced detail and intelligent discourse, mixed with intelligent, and sometimes, slapstick, comedy.

@BarNoneLounge actually its surprising i watched the special features and they were talking about why its rare to see political shows on tv: because they only appeal to the audience that agrees with them, but the people on the west wing were saying that they get letters from republicans all the time who love the show but ignore the ethical dilemma part of it.

@BarNoneLounge: This Republican thinks it was one of the best shows on TV. I may not agree with their goals, but the characters are incredible, the writing is genius, and the show is all-around entertaining.

What bill could congress possibly be working on that involves the 3rd amendment? It basically says the government can't force you to quarter troops in your home. Otherwise, one of my favorite west wing scenes.

Late to the party, but if a new military base was to be built with a specific spot picked and would require eminent domain of private property. Or, even any law expanding the ability of the government to pull eminent domain as the other ones he lists are about trial by jury and property preservation.

The West Wing is _definitely_ worth watching, but it does have its shortcomings. The most notable is the Sorkin-style habit of writing dialogue that sounds written. There are dozens of examples in which characters come up with scintillating rhetoric and banter. Moreover, many of the comebacks are too pat and polished. Then there are the odd slips when it comes to naming conventions. For example, on one occasion when talking about a Russian missile silo, Leo refers to "the Oblast region". Oblast is Russian for...region. Or there is the time that Jed has to go see the Reykjavik orchestra. The male ambassador to Iceland has a surname ending in dottir, which means daughter. Only Icelandic girls have surnames with dottir as the suffix. Males have...son.

After the debacle that was Studio 60, a lot of people complained that Aaron Sorkin couldn't write comedy. I think The West Wing often had moments that show just how well he can -- and this scene is one of them.

@Reqrezentin It's at the same level as the shows you mentioned (and just slightly better than Jersey Shore). It has a caliber of writing that only a few other shows in the history of television can even come near. I personally think it's a better show than the Sopranos or Breaking Bad (which are both excellent) and I like it more than the Wire (probably just due to my obsession with politics). Aaron Sorkin is one of the greatest writers in entertainment history and this show is his magnum opus.
