No one asked this but my strangest car buying experience was a 97 Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi, few hours drive away in Palmerston North and asking price was $2600 NZD. This was back in 2012. Car looked very tidy in the photos, nice shade of red, sports exhaust, mint factory 5 spoke alloys, sweet. So i messaged him to see if we could see the car this weekend, all good. So we turn up, car looks as good as in the pictures, ask if we can take it for a drive, " err sure if it'll start you can, but first i need a photo of your license. " No mention of running issues in the listing, ( in hindsight i should've asked before such a long drive but i was young and still rather dim. ) Eventually we got the car started and took it for a test drive, everything felt mint, only thing the tires wouldn't pass a WoF ( MoT ) and the cold starting issue was the main concern. We'd come all this way so no matter what we're taking it, so i bullshitted my way around being a Peugeot/Citroen mechanic claiming i knew exactly what was wrong with it and that it's going to set me back a lot on parts to get it running right again, plus the tires were shot so i offered $1700 NZD. No hesitation " Yep. " We do a bank transfer right there, hands me the keys " Any problem, not my problem now. " as he backs away slowly with his hand up in the air.... Once we got closer to home we got a strong stink of fuel, i figured it's been ok this far, last bit of the trip she'll be right, down the driveway and the smell was very very strong, figured it would be wise to let the car cooldown a bit first. After a cup of tea, open the bonnet and have sniff about for a fuel leak, i found the hose and prodded it, it then ruptured and sprayed petrol all over the thankfully now stone cold exhaust manifold... Oh and it was a $20 temp sensor that was the cold start issue. We've still got the car, she's been pretty good to us overall.

In regards to window tint i think you boys need to visit Australia where you have it for a purpose. The heat reduction on your arm or side of face with it on is immediately noticeable, plus it saves your interior from fading. I have 15% LT tint on all my dailys and work vehicles. I have not put it on my 1978 Opel Manta though as it would not suit, even though i worry about the interior in the sun.

Tyre receipts are a great insight into how well a car has been looked after. I discovered one of the previous owners of my Clio 182 had fitted 17 inch wheels because of a tyre receipt 🧐 so presumably my car spent a lot of time in McDonald's car parks 😂

49:36 Window tint use case: I got my Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake 200d (2022) with factory tint at the back. Two reasons for this: 1) The only people I'll carry at the back are carpoolers I pick up when I drive very long distances (500+mi/day). The dark windows combined with the black roof liner put my passengers in some sort of a cosy cocoon in which they almost inevitably fall asleep. I can, then, drive peacefully without being bothered by their chitchat, their phone calls or the videos they would be watching on their phones without headphones. 2) I use my car as a lightweight camper van, sometimes leaving for more than 2 weeks on the roads of Europe, sleeping on a mattress at the back, with real pillows and proper sheets. The dark windows and black roof liner allow me to park anywhere and not risk being seen naked by a hiker passing by or a family of 5 parking next to me. It also keeps my car significantly cooler in the summer, which is perfect for those sunny mornings I want to sleep in. I will never not have an estate car without window tint at the back.

@mono_vt

Oh yes, living in Scotland, the sun (on the rare chance that it shows itself) when it's rising or setting is in your eyes, it's annoying, having windows tinted would really help with that. Problem is having window tint can make the car uncomfortably cold first thing in the morning. Not that I mind it personally, but I know some people are more bothered by it.

20:30 funny story I can relate to, I live in Australia and I bought a Holden Calais as my first car (Calais is a fancy trim package for the Holden Commodore) and it had the supercharged V6 engine. In Australian slang, the Buick/Ecotec 3.8-litre V6 engines are often referred to as "mangs" or a "mang mang" or something to this effect. This is because "mang" is the sound they make when they bounce off the rev limiter. So I began calling my Holden Calais "the mang" and eventually this terminology stuck on amongst my friends and family to the point where my father who is in his mid-60s would ask "Will you be taking the mang today??". I'm not sure if he ever found out what mang really meant 😆

A light tint means I don't need to wear sunglasses over my regular glasses, or pay for the expensive transition lenses. It also provides a UV barrier, which keeps the interior of car cooler; this is important here in Kansas, where we were over 90 degrees Fahrenheit every day this entire summer (and much of the spring and fall so far), and often over 100 degrees. Just my two cents.

@@tadassmolskas3014 I can totally understand your point, but for example, I "tinted" all of my windows with 80% transparency tint for Infrared reflection, and despite the fact that all my windows are basically clear, I don't have the burning sensation on my face and arms when I travel mid summer day at 45 degrees. It really made a difference. Also, this is for Will and Edwin, at the shop where I tinted my windows, almost any car with panoramic sunroof had it tinted, because it's freaking insane otherwise, it's just too hot.

@@HiruS22 Not illegal in the States, unless they are tinted to a mirrored state, or too dark to see into, which is still pretty dark. I get Will's take completely. I'd rather be King of the chavs than the poorest guy at the golf club. I usually look for the step down from the top spec model as top specs generally depriciate slower (so ST instead of RS, GTI instead of R, etc.) and find cars of these specs within my budget and pain tolerance. I've never understood people who would buy, for example, a base spec polo over an ibiza FR, or even a polo GTI that's the same generation, just a couple of years older. I instantly assume those guys like football.

It was the same colour (Le Mans blue) with the same body kit etc but it didn’t have iDrive, no heated seats, no climate control, no puddle lights, no Bluetooth audio etc etc and it was only £350 cheaper than the car I bought. Nice now we have 2 cool podcasts from former CT members i guess CT crashing and burning gave us much more fun content :D Good job boys love it and im with Will on the tint one some places have hot summer not that you lads in the UK know about that :D and tint saves your interior from burning over time and being super hot when you enter the car. Also tint just looks cool on some cars :D

I guess being born and raised in Florida my whole life, window tint is like one of the first things you do to a car here. My own personal car a 2016 chevy suburban i have 5% in the back and 15% on the front 2 windows and a tint strip on the windshield. The heat from driving on road trips on non tinted cars gives me headaches and the tint dramatically reduces the heat it allows in. The tint on my truck is ceramic which helps more. Also being a technician here, i've worked on quite a few trucks and cars that has 5% tint all around and then 20% on the windshield. Driving them into our shop makes it look like night time but man the amount of heat it reduces from coming thru your windows is immense. I do also like the privacy of window tint. But also being in the U.S, theirs a lot of good tint shops that if its done right it wont bubble the tint for a long time. And also i personally think tint dramatically changes the look of a car in a good way.

Factory tinted glass - YES. It's subtle, and nice on a bright day. Some aftermarket tinted windows, as long as it's a light tint, under some circumstances on some cars, maybe. Works on estate cars, or two seater sports cars with small rear quarter windows. Standard 2 or 4 door cars, NO. Dark/limo tint, in the UK, where you can't tint the front driver's and passenger window - looks bloody awful. It looks half baked, and half arsed. As if someone started the job, got half way through it, couldn't be arsed to finish the job, and went down the pub, never to return and finish the job. Sunroof - YES. Love them. More practical than a convertible. Makes the interior lighter. Tilted gives a nice airflow through the car. Open gives some of the feeling of a convertible.

The tint if done correctly can actually cool down your car during the summer, because quality window tint can block UV rays from the sun and also it reflects some sunlight. A car with no window tint absorbs more sunshine and heat than a car with window tints.

Loved ep1. I totally get what Edwin means. I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 in trigger mauve, with red accent recaro interior and I wouldn't sell it if someone offered me many times what it's worth. It took me so long to find this one, and it''s so rare you'd never be able to replace it.

The story telling around the purchase of the cheap drag cars can be put into the episode itself. Top gear would do that if you think about it, either on the spot during the shooting or in the studio

I had a pretty similar thing with my Evo 8! Bought it super clean. Synchro on 3rd left the chat after 4 months, 2 months waiting for the box to be rebuilt. Then after a year it tried to set on fire, so fixed it and sold it to a guy who came all the way down from Aberdeen (8 hours) who drove it back without tax or insurance... I'm sure it's a cube now because I can't find it anywhere.

Car runed everyting. I bought an e46 330 touring (with the SMG gearbox). Didnt even make it home. Back half of the car all the brake lines are rotten and leaking. And I sold my old car (a 98 rover 400 tourer, which never had any issues) so now I dont even have car to drive to work. Love the podcast btw!

If it was a 330 it would have been the SSG which was even worse than the SMG and a totally different box. Thankfully they didn’t sell many, the standard torque converter was much better, just needs regular lubrication of the selector linkage under the car or the change ups get very lazy

As for window tints, it depends on where you live. I live in Hanoi Vietnam where there is over 300 days of sunshine a year, and from May - October the sun is oppressively hot and right, an average day is in the very high 30's and even into the mid 40's. To combat this we have a 3M UV tint on our car all round. Believe me it is needed!

It sure does depend where you live, in the UK tints on the windscreen and front windows is illegal. Makes the cars look kinda half-finished actually...

Love the podcast. Only bone to pick is window tint. Trying living in a country like Australia with a car you get sunburnt or a tan just driving. Window tint is life for me especially when it cuts UV and heat in the car. In my opinion cars without tint look shithouse anyway. I don’t want to see the stains in your white leather seats.

A point towards your window tint debate... I've always had cars with dark tints (usually factory fit), and my Mrs has always gone fishbowl. Every summer, out came her window covers to protect the little ones from the glare of the sun. They look like old tights, awful. I've never needed them, my windows block out enough light. Shes now tinted her current car, used it for a few summers before and since the tint, made a massive difference just to the heat coming in, and no more tights wrapped around the car!
