Why You Shouldn't Use a Keypad for Access Control

To make this secure there are a few options 1. Use a tamper switch that when tripped will cause a latch relay to drop out which will remove power to the door strike. This must be installed in the secured area not outside. Or 2. Swap out the key pad for split type, eg just a keyboard outside electronics, code store and relays etc are on the inside of the door.

RFID readers that are all in ones like the keypad lock you showed, suffer the same issue. When the 'controller' is built in, then you'll always get this issue. Keypads work, when its just a 'data' cable from the keypad to a controller elsewhere, so there are no 'pins' to short.

There are a few tricks to making it very difficult, using a keypad, use a taper switch or two, once the bandit has opened up the keypad, lock is automatically disconnected from the keypad. Trick two potting the inside of the keypad so electronics and relay contacts cannot be accessed. Trick 3 the cable tail at the back of keypad is pulled tight on installation so if keypad is ripped off wall there is no play in the cable, so its impossible to get into the cable to short the wires and operate the solenoid, and the tamper switches has disconnected the lock solenoid anyway..

This is partially misleading, if it’s a stand alone access system then you can do this. If it’s tied into a access panel this will not work. Regardless the risk of sharing keys is a bigger issue

If you buy a cheap option you are able to access the relay easily. But not when you do it with an arduino or with an keypad build in to your arlam system.

Anyone who doesn't purchase a keypad with a tamper resist detector (basically a spring that detects if the keypad is secured to the housing) deserves to be broken in to. The most simple, $20 secolarm models include it! As soon as the housing is off, it trips the alarm. I'm sure I could find a poorly designed biometric scanner to use as a bad example, too!

Keypads can not be shorted if you are using a access controller. Anybody that is looking for extra security or the use of multiple doors for there home or Busness should know that you need access controller to prevent this from happing. Also why are you showing that your keypads are a piece of shit bevy they don’t have a tamper switch. Your the security company that hooked them up wrong.

That is why you don't install a cheap and nasty old keypad like that one on any access control system! especially one that has a relay built in it to control the power to the door lock, and with common screw heads easily accessible. Duh

Iron Shark I do this stuff for a living and just a week ago I installed 2 FINGERPRINT readers that still used the relay at the reader.... SMH. It was in a secured building though but prime example of the customer always being right, and them trying so save money, but thinking they have a James Bond access control system. Lol
