It's important to educate people on current jobs market, there is too much false marketing failing peoples expectations.

Exactly. A friend of mine is a recruiter for a medium sized tech company, and they've posted job listings for entry level and junior UX Designers. They get 1500-2000+ applicants per listing. Yes, a large amount of them likely aren't qualified. But at the same time, a large amount of them are overqualified - as in mid-level to even senior designers who were laid off from their previous job willing to work for a junior/entry level salary. So these are the guys who get hired. Juniors essentially have very, very little chance right now.

Nothing wrong with being a UX/UI designer but if you can learn Web Design/Development or Digital Marketing on top of that, it can make you a great contender amongst other applicants. There are so many free learning resources that staying within just one field now could potentially limit your opportunities.

There are a lot of things that juniors do that will not take them over the line and get hired. Everything from the CV, portfolio to the way you present your designs and communicate is being measured against more experienced designers in the field. It's harder yes but not impossible to get into the field.

I just completed a bootcamps by a company called, Career Foundry. I spent 7000 dollars on it and about 90% of what they taught was also easily searchable on KZbin and just shredded my expectations so much. They also had a "1 on 1" mentor who would coach you. They were awful, I had 3 in total because 2 of them just quit responding while the last was very helpful but also went radio silent. I have 3 projects of high quality on behance and I haven't even applied to jobs yet because I just have a feeling I will have wasted my time. If you guys have had any similar experiences please let me know I'm curious if anyone has also faced this.

Not to mention right now UX itself is dying as a profession with AI and website builders steamrolling all of it. As for the content itself I could've 1000% found every single thing on KZbin, they even linked KZbin videos in the docs themselves. It's a complete waste of money in my opinion and you'd be better served doing a Google certification and getting a portfolio together that being if you're already in tech. I don’t think it is impossible to get a job in tech. But i do think many people have a false impression of how much effort they have to put into their self managed education. Its not enough to do a bootcamp a few hours a week. I have done a 1 year bootcamp in a physical office. I didnt treat this year as a slow bootcamp where i only worked like 4-5 hrs a dayand only during week days..no..i did it about 12hrs every dy including most weekends. Had basically no vacation. Just kept my head down and worked and strived to make it as much fun as possible. Eventually it became fun and i didnt thin of it just as hard work I am now at the end of that year and i have had multiple offers as a frontend dev and ux designer, currently in an internship now and next week i am starting at a new job. So are therenojobs? No, there are plenty, but i think many people might not be up for putting in the hours it takes. So whoever reads this and you feel a bit defeated or lacking motivation. You can do this..if i can do it, you sure as hell can..trust me!

This is utterly discouraging and I don’t know what to do with my current situation. I’ve been dedicating all my free time to learning UX/UI (I work full time in project management). I’m still very early on but I’m liking UX and considering a potential career change. When I hear things like this I’d be a fool not to believe it but I’m stuck somewhere between “it’s impossible? I’ll show them!” and at the other end of the spectrum, maybe I should just stop before sunk cost fallacy creeps in. Do I continue and let it play out hoping the landscape for hiring gets better in a year or so or just find a new skill to learn? Has ANYONE heard of people successfully career switching into UX recently? Does my professional working experience give me any advantage?

Hey Dan! Understandable that you find this discouraging. I actually pivoted from project management into UX/UI (it was back in 2020, so a slightly different market then). I think what people often miss about this is that the TYPE of role you're going after (company, team size, industry) makes a HUGE difference regarding your chances. In my case, I've always worked for start-ups, and start-ups really, really value people who have 'start-up experience'. So, even if you're a junior, if you've worked in a similar environment even with a different skill-set, it can be extremely advantageous if you're changing your discipline. At the end of the day, UX/UI designers (product designers) are 'problem solvers' - it's not just about learning how to arrange pixels on a screen, it's becoming an architect. That involves a TON of different skills from various disciplines, which is why (to Ran's point) bootcamps make it tough for juniors to then land jobs. Bootcamps don't teach designers about the 10 other skills they need to be successful (how to understand engineers, how to deal with a non-linear design process, how to deal with limited resources, etc...). If you like UX/UI, don't let this discourage you! It's just super important to build up a complete picture of what the UX/UI/Product design discipline involves, and then show a potential employer that you have those skills, either through a portfolio or previous experience. Hope that helps :)

It is definitely tough getting in. I was in a boot camp about a year and a half ago and I think still some of my cohort are trying to find jobs using the skills we learned. I was lucky I had family in the field so when a position opened up I could get in there and help the company grow their design with my mentor (before us they only used contract designers) now that I’ve been here for a year and made myself invaluable they don’t want to let me go lol. I also have a big background in all sorts of art and design principles already so I do naturally have a good eye for things and think creatively which I think was a huge boost in my value as an employee. The market really only wants you either coming in with a lot of experience or really exceptional design skills. So it’s not for the faint of heart.

The UX design job market is just stabilizing. Ppl were so focused on following hundreds of designers with no real background besides visual design maybe, for example. But visual design is not the only thing that matters when getting into the product design job market. Once when it was so popular during the beginning of the 20's, everyone was going on the UI trend completely excluding the quality UX, thanks to "design influencers". And those who got Jr jobs during those years, the UI/UX Design boom are now being targeted for layoffs, cuz they don't bring a significant value to company business. And now those design influencers are being targeted as well due to lack of qualifications. That's why I think we are headed more towards the stabilized Product Design market in the future and less layoffs happening.

A lot of companies used to think they needed a UX designer but they can't utilise your skill day to day so like Ran said, they drop you to save money. This happened to me twice in my career. So now UX is my secondary skill. UI is your new primary skill, also you should now learn either JS, react, Vue, php, weblfow. It may take a while but it's better for the long run.

Being a self taught designer is like going to a nuclear war with a bamboo stick. You will need a mentor that has years of experience in this industry if you want to win.

Of course there aren't many opportunities in UX/UI right now, but that is also the truth for web designers. If you're going to say that doing web design/development has so much more opportunities you should back it up with data and stats, not only from your personal experience. This video just sounds like self promo without a real foundation for your arguments

What’s the difference between ux/ui and web design?
@WyrdHamster
@WyrdHamster 3 ай бұрын
Theoretically, UX is about creating processes, with apps, mainly. Webdesign is about User Experience on website. Soo, really, difference is Apps vs Websites. :)

AI won't be able to do user interviews and find solutions to human problems. UX is still going to be heavily influenced by humans because we understand the human nature the best

There may not necessarily be one. Sometimes, the market just isn't very ideal for certain jobs, and it just had to be ridden out until it starts looking better again.

The real solution is to wait for the job market to settle down. The competitive job market is not within our control, and our best option is to change course into a related and less saturated (and probably lesser paid) careers.

Was going to say EXACTLY this. I have read many blogs and articles recently talking about tech layoffs and UX Design and still they all say it is a promising and growing industry still to this day and will continue into the future despite all the noise saying otherwise. It's funny that the gurus on KZbin discouraging people nonstop all have a course that they offer as the solution, so pathetic. And another thing I realized is they say this because the current job market, but how are we to know what it will be like in a year from now? Or 2 or 3 years if there is a bounce back with economic growth? I can't stand KZbinrs that make stuff like this for content. I have another one in mind but I won't name him
