It's not the sacrifice that made Griffith bad Griffith was in a situation where he was tortured for over a year and left an insane, mutilated mute living corpse. Cause you gotta realize, Griffith had two crushes : reaching his dream and possessing Guts. Not to make an apology of the guy cause the eclipse was one of the biggest, if not the biggest dick move of manga history. But looking at it logically (which is not always humanely), in a pit of absolute despair would you refuse the one and only rope to greatness lying on the edge of contempt? Cause either Griffith would have lived his entire life miserable and looking like a rag doll or destroyed what was around him to rise. Don’t get me wrong, all he had to do was not to bang the damn princess out of spite but we all at some point did something stupid because we got hurt emotionally. Arguably, he acted like a kid and wanted to prove to himself that he was still able to possess someone as he saw Casca and Guts drift away. Personally, I WANT to say I will not hurt the people that supported me - and… do other things - for my personal gain whatever situation I can be in. But I also know what something as simple as hunger can do to a human mind, twisting it in the worst ways and chipping steadily at the slither of empathy still standing. I can understand why Griffith did what he did but in no way do I defend him. There were so many points that he could’ve stopped and have been fine with just being a general, talked with guts instead of dueling him when he tried to leave, could’ve just waited for the king to pass of old age to take the throne/ the princess, he could’ve not made moves on Casca on the wagon, tearing her away from guts, and don’t get me started on the ending of the eclipse.
