I have a 2 yr old that was born at 26 weeks who is now 27 months and only has 3 words we’ve heard. Only 1 consistently and that’s Dada. She did have global delays that were still pretty normal for her adjusted age (sitting up at 9.5 months, crawling at 13 months, pulling up at 14 months and walking at 17 months). She imitates sounds with perfect tone and cadence but through humming. She doesn’t open her mouth too much. We are in speech therapy but due to COVID we’ve had to do it via Zoom which isn’t that easy to do. It’s hard to get her to sit still for an hour in her high chair or at her table. It’s so frustrating seeing other children younger than her talking. Is this common?

It sounds like you have had quite the journey! Well done for growing your baby to this point seeing how preterm she was born! I have a couple of thoughts...first, it's great that she is having speech therapy, and while teletherapy may not work so well for toddlers, you can choose to understand what the targets are and implement them across the day. Are you able to have a discussion with your daughter's speech therapist about some of the things you could do every day to move your daughter's communication along. Second, has your daughter had a hearing evaluation? If not, do have her inner ear and middle ear tested. There are various tests for the inner ear, which can be recommended based on her status (level of attention, etc). See this _video_ for more about hearing assessments and their importance. Now, it's great that your daughter is imitating the intonation for sounds, however, this in itself is a little concerning, but paired with the fact that you said she doesn't open her mouth too much, I feel her mouth may hold some answers for why she is delayed in her speech/language skills. I would want to know about her other oral motor skills such as what texture of foods she eats, whether she chews or if there are foods she cannot stand. Also, how are other motor skills eg. running, self-feeding? Is she clumsy? Depending on how you respond to the questions above, you may be able to rule in/out the possibility of your daughter having a condition known as dyspraxia, also known as verbal dyspraxia or childhood apraxia of speech. Obviously, I cannot disgnose just from a description, so use this information to gather more information and push for a re-assessment should you feel it's indicated from what you gather. If I can support you in any way, do not hesitate to reach out.

My daughter who just turned two this month (January 5, 2022) she was also born at just 26 weeks and had the same timeframe for her milestones as yours, mine can say words that you ask her to say but only single syllables, and doesn’t say words without being asked to very much at all. I’m just curious since your daughter is now 3 how is she doing now with her speech ? I’m getting mine assessed tomorrow actually for speech therapy and OT.

My son did very well in all other developmental skills. Sitting up by 6 months, crawling at 8 months. Walking at 10 months, his eyes were wide open right after birth, he was very determined to see but talking... No and I know for a fact he pays attention to what he wants. He is responding to his name more normally now but he's 21 months and I have to find the perfect and appropriate tone when calling his name or he wont respond. I just knew he would be talking by now. But I was given pitocin then rushed into c section surgery. He had a delayed cry and he was puffy.

He talks nothing at all just makes sounds responds to his name like 6/7 times out of 10 maybe. Im pretty sure he doesnt have autism because he can copy what i do He can play with with me when he wants to. He can hand me a toy to play with him. Ive asked him on multiple occasions to put lids in the cabinet/things in the trash and he can comply with out problem what feels like it. But this whole speech thing kind of worries me. my son was also relatively quick to crawl/walk etc and when he was born it was a prolonged birth, suction cup thingy and ending in c-section. My little girl is 2 years and 3 months. She doesn't say anything other than mama or dada. She makes lots of sounds which we recognise but that's only because we know what she means. My birth was fine other than I had a hemorrhage straight after she was born. When she was 2 months old she developed a bad virus and needed to spend 2 weeks in hospital on oxygen and was tube fed. I then developed severe postnatal anxiety and depression and was taking into a mother and baby unit when my baby was a 3 months old. I had a lot of problems bonding with her. I keep blaming myself for her delay. She wasn't delayed with any other milestones other than smiling.

He just can’t talk really. He says mama, dadda, Dj, Che Che for milk, uh oh, shoe, 3 when counting to three, and maybe a few more. That’s it. What does the delay mean really since it was a traumatic birth? Is that a sign of Brain damage? Or will he overcome this delay and be fine? He understand no and points to things and communicates great, it’s just limited words still at 21 months.

Hallo, Oh absolutely do back off and expect your son to use his words. If you're preemptying a lot of his needs, he has little need to communicate. Try putting things out of his reach, but within visible sight, so consider putting his toys in a see-through container, but one that requires him to seek assistance to open it so that each time he wants something, he has to take you to it, and when this happens you'll be getting an opportunity to model language to him. The truth is, there are many teaching opportunities in the everyday interactions moments parents have with their children only we don't tend to see them as such. I could honestly go on about all the ways you could take advantage of these opportunities or the techniques to use to encourage your child to talk, however, you may want to check my online course for parents, which does precisely that...(speechtherapytotos.com/late-talkers-bootcamp) Try the sample modules (speechtherapytotos.com/3-part-video-series) for some easy to apply pointers and decide thereafter if the full course is something you would like to get to help grow your son's language skills. Wishing him the best. Lorna PS: I apologise for taking a while to respond

So my daughter has just turned 20months, she has reached all other milestones but her speech is very much delayed, she can say mumma & dada, grandad & her favourite thing to say whilst pointing at things is "what's that". Other then those things she doesn't say anything else, is there any way I could really help encourage her to speak, I try reading books but she's not interested and when she asks me "what's that?" I'll tell her and she doesn't respond back to me.
@SpeechTherapyTotos4 жыл бұрын
Just continue responding to her "what's that?" questions with the names of the things she's asking about. I'm sure it sounds like you've done everything, but I can assure you that there are many opportunities to encourage her language skills that you may not be focusing on. Singing, bath-time, on the mat play sessions, eating time, during car rides, etc. These present a fraction of all the opportunities you have to stimulate or "model" language to your daughter. As I get this question a lot, I made a course for parents wishing to grow their late talker's language, which you can follow this link - speechtherapytotos.com/3-part-video-series- to get a snippet of it, which if you find useful, you can consider purchasing the full course. This is utterly frustrating. We ALWAYS talk to my 2 year old. ALWAYS ENCOURAGE her to speak but she just don’t talk, only gibberish. 😔
@SpeechTherapyTotos4 жыл бұрын
He...he...thank you for your honesty! It can be frustrating...I mean how hard is it to just say "mama", right? Well, for some children, this seemingly easy skill, isn't so easy. For children for whom talking doesn't come as naturally, parents must break down the steps for them, but most parents are too skilled in talking that they themselves forgot the steps a child goes through to learn how to talk. They focus on things that come 5 steps ahead, but wonder why their efforts are not bearing fruit. Like teaching the alphabet, colours, counting, etc. are activities that won't grow a late talker's language. Because there could be too many reasons for your daughter not talking, I suggest you go through my KZbin channel (Speech Therapy Totos) for some ideas you can implement in a bid to making the home environment more conducive to her learning how to talk. And if you require more support, check out my course for parents in the same situation as you- speechtherapytotos.com/late-talkers-bootcamp

Omdaizz I just stumbled upon your video. My daughter is really delayed in speech. She has had a global delay to say I’m crawling, walking but not pulling self up. She watches cartoons quite a bit I’ll say about 10hours in a week). Could you please reach out to me on how to help her please? Could you do a video assessment? This video was very informative, she literally had running nose from when she started nursery at 12month to about 18month. Since then it’s been on and off. She has had a few viral infections. At some point she kept holding on to her ear. Could you offer us some help please? Thank you.

Has food or diet got anything to do with a child not talking on time?? Please reply
@SpeechTherapyTotos4 жыл бұрын
The short answer is it could in some extreme cases but for a majority of children, their food or diet should not impact on their ability to develop timely language skills. There have been studies that have uncovered that certain food intolerances might interfere with a child's behaviour i.e. their ability to attend consistently which in turn could impact on their ability to learn language.

My nephew is 2 years old isn’t talking yet either. He understands words but does not say them. If he does say anything, it is one word like Eattt. He tries to talk but everything is slurred and you can tell he gets frustrated when we don’t know what he is saying. His motor skills are fine. He runs and points at what he wants.
@SpeechTherapyTotos4 жыл бұрын
Hallo, and thank you for the inquiry. Your concern for your cousin is also endearing. From the very little information you have provided, your nephew may be presenting with both a speech issue as well as a language issue. This video here- kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGfdn4GvjM2Df5I- makes a distinction between 'speech' and 'language'. You mentioned that his words are slurred. Is that an accurate description of the nature of the errors you've noticed? Slurring of speech would be indicative of muscle weakness, and is markedly different from just mispronounciations that don't have a muscle component like omissions, deletions of sounds, etc. In order to be able to accurately diagnose the specific etiology for his difficulties, I would also need to know how much he is understanding. Is he for example able to follow complex instructions? I highly suggest that you recommend to your nephew's parents to get his speech and language skills evaluated, as at his age, speech therapy can help mitigate these issues, failure to which could lead to persistent learning and social difficulties. Warmly.Lorna
