This is the reason why being loyal to a company is usually a bad idea after X amount of years. Yearly "salary raises", barely even keep up with inflation. If someone wants a real raise, the best option is to change companies.

My husband asked for a raise at his job. He’s consistently a top performer. They said no raises this year... So husband went to another job and is getting a 24% raise and a hefty sign on bonus. No need to beg. Do move on though and maybe your employer will get it when many walk.

Too many times people don’t live within their means. Some people view money as a vehicle to get there more money and most people see it as stuff that you can just buy. Read the book it’s a good one or search for the audio book.

My tax guy raised his price because of inflation. So did the restaurant I ate at recently, my lawn service, the utilities company, the grocery store, the gas station etc. They didn’t give more me value. I got the same product or service as before but it cost more. Ramsey sounds like a terrible place to work. To bad, most of Dave’s financial advice is rock solid.

Your company may perceive you as not worth the raise due to inflation but another company might see value in your work. I am starting to think it is important to switch companies every few years because some of these companies are ridiculous when it comes to salary. I saw a job that wanted a masters degree but would only pay $15/hr. You can get a job at Target or Buccees paying that much now.

First of all you don't know that he raised rent, your making assumptions. If I had to guess I'd say he probably did and that's ok. Landlords (I hate that term) provide a valuable service. They provide housing to people who cannot afford to buy homes. Imagine if renting wasn't an option. Landlords put up their own money to buy homes. Then they rent out those homes to other people. They do this as an investment, they do it to make money. They are not running a charity. They must be profitable.

If you aren’t given an inflation raise, you’re literally taking a pay cut in real terms. If he truly adjusts to the market, and gives raises based on the cost to rehire, then he is effectively giving inflation based raises anyways, and is doing better than every company I have worked at that did give cost of living raises. If I can get a job at another company using the skills I learned at my current company, I'm going to do that if my boss doesn't want to increase my pay. "Don't give raises based on inflation" means that I'm not sticking around. In 5 years, I've almost doubled my pay by job hopping. If I'd stayed at my first job in my career, I'd still be making very little money compared to what I make now. Corporations know this. They just don't care enough about workers to do anything about it. They're trained to care about the dollar, not the worker... until you leave. Then they act all hurt and shaken that you'd do to them exactly what you did to your last employer who wouldn't give you a raise.

Did you even listen to the video? If you can be replaced for $X why should an employer pay you $1.2X? If you were to leave and go to another company they would offer you $X as well. It all comes down to the marketplace. It's like saying I bought a house for $700k, spent $200k improving it so I want at least $900k. Sorry but you don't really get to dictate that, it is the marketplace. If housing drops over the board, you need to take some losses if you want to sell. Same thing for jobs. You need to take some losses on your buying power if others who are doing the same job as you are willing to get paid the same amount or even less.

This is a really bad take that only looks to benefit employers. The real advice that isn't mentioned in this video is that loyalty and performances don't necessary guarantee a raise. In contrast a negative performance can get you replaced or fired. The only way up is to switch jobs. I hope more people realize this and do better for themselves.

Agree. I switch jobs, every 2-3 years (for now). I’ve never gotten a raise that could compete with the outside offer. If people do the math, they would realize that you make more money by switching jobs vs getting annual raises. My employers are ok with that, they are the ones that tend to approach me on LinkedIn, so they see my track record. As long as I’m going in and adding value/improving processes making the company better than it was before I came, I don’t need to stay forever.

Most of the ones I’ve known are really passionate at first, work 50-80 hours a week grinding, and burn out after a few months.

Dave couldn't be more wrong here. He says "you are only paid what you can be replaced for" but then doesn't realize people can find another job paying 20% more without blinking an eye. If you think of pay as a retention tool, realize that if you don't increase pay during inflationary periods, you are going to have horrible retention issues.

When the terms "raise based on inflation" is used, that's generally in terms of "inflation in the cost of living". In other words, pay me more because I need it to afford my standard of living.

Definitely disagreeing with Dave here, rather disappointed. Without an inflation based raised my income is reduced because my living cost rises and in this case significantly. I have walked away from bosses like you. I no longer ask for a wage, I tell my interviewers my wage and if they can't pay me what I want....I move on. My employer has to work with me not against me. Terribly disappointed in Dave here.

What the heck did Ken say? "...they think that they should get a bump for inflation, so if we play that reasoning out, that means you take it away as soon as inflation begins to subside." That makes no sense. Hypothetically, if a company gave annual salary increases based on the annual inflation rate, the size of next year's raise (in percentage) might decrease from this year's, but the company would only decrease salaries in the case of negative inflation (deflation), which has happened only a couple of times since the Great Depression.

Love Dave's personal finance philosophy, but this take was so bad. Labor is a commodity and like every other commodity, it must and will respond to inflation. And it usually happens when people stop working for bosses like Dave and take a job that will actually cover their new cost of living. He's being pretty self contradictory as well, since he's been telling landlords they shouldn't feel guilty for raising rent because of inflation. If landlords can give themselves a raise, you better believe workers are going to do the same.

You don't GIVE wages you EARN wages. If you want better pay prove that you're worth it. Prove that you're better than the person next to you or better than somebody else that he can hire to replace you. This is the real world, you don't get a participation trophy, you earn your wages. Further your education, take training courses, do the extra mile. I know doing extra for your job is frowned upon but it makes a difference.

I love Dave like no one else, but Dave is wrong, wrong, wrong here. “Just manage your budget” is NOT the solution. And, Ken, inflation only goes one direction. It is not going to “go back down”. As someone who is generally loyal, this just confirms you must leave!! Inflation forces us all to spend more time and energy job-hopping and on self-promoting just to break even. Though it IS good to stay in the “marketplace” to know what you’re worth…

@@bluecollartradesman715 right but cost of living generally trends upwards and buying power of the dollar generally tends downwards, so most workers in most cities don’t have much to lose. Even famously mismanaged cities like Detroit, St. Louis, and Cleveland have skyrocketing costs of living.

@Derek Mitchell I don't get your point. Mismanagement tends to cause inflation. Buying power is a problem right now. Even though the costs are up, the US dollar is insanely strong as a currency. That's another part of the equation a lot of people overlook.

@@sblijheid My point was that workers don't have much to lose if their pay is tied to inflation and inflation reduces. Real estate drives inflation so cities that don't build housing at rates which keep up with demand (especially dense housing with access to multi-modal transportation) experience the worst effects of inflation. Cities (like the ones mentioned) that build sprawling suburbs leave little room for growth set themselves up for problems with expensive deferred maintenance and may even experience localized deflation. Urban planners refer to this phenomenon as the growth ponzi scheme. The dollar is a strong currency when traded against most other currencies, but its purchasing power has consistently declined since the 80's. If the wage is held constant then you'd see and increase over time in the required wage hours to afford the same commodities.

@MechE11B I have never bought a single thing from him, yet I have learned a lot through his video's such as this one. I also use them to stay informed on current financial news and get the real story. I have never spent a single dollar on this. If he hated the working class he would make us pay for these videos. It would add a lot of revenue to his company, yet he gives it to us for free. And on top of that he is always giving away books and courses to people who call in if he feels that it would truely help them. If he hates the working class, he is really good at hiding it.

"pay what you can be replaced for" is correct, which is exactly why you gotta adjust salary based on inflation. Inflation means that the market value of my job goes up every year so if you don't do the adjustment now you are offering the lowest paying job in the market and nobody will take up the position.
