@@SlapstickGenius23 The Clone Wars season 7 is NOT a reboot, it's a CONTINUATION of the Yoda and Qui Gon arc from season 6. This time the story follows Ahsoka leading up to the events of Revenge of the sith. Nothing is being retold or retconned. Technically speaking I would say this whole show from 2008 is a reboot of the 2003 clone wars as that was from Legends. So maybe I guess the Disney canon timeline is rebooting some stuff from the expanded universe?

The most tragic thing about this whole reboot culture we're in, is that there is an entire generation of creators, especially in animation, whose ideas and concepts will never see the light of day because cashing in on millennial and early gen z nostalgia is extremely profitable. It also makes you wonder why we have not seen studios do the same thing with earlier properties like the Flintstones and the Jetsons and Yogi bear. With the exceptions of Scooby-doo, Looney Toons, and the Smurfs. I think it's because that generation has grown up and has left their childhood in the past. You don't see boomers clamoring for studios to reboot shows from their youth; whereas millennials seem to be stuck mentally in the past; which I think is indicative of a larger issue at hand. It sucks because for every PPG and Ben10 reboot that takes a time slot on the network, it could have been filled by something new and original. Just look at how Nickelodeon/Viacom treats new animated shows, if they don't pull Spongebob numbers in the first season they get canceled. I don't think that this issue goes away until our generation moves on from the past and allows new younger creators to take the helm of animation for a new generation. But hey, that's just a theory.
@johnnydo7138
@johnnydo7138 2 жыл бұрын
I agree very much dude. I've seen dozens of animated shows come and go growing up and I was always sad when they left, but I was also excited for the new stuff that was gonna fill their slot. Now its just the same old stuff being dragged up from it's grave and I'm just like "I don't want to see reboots of the stuff I grew up watching, nostalgia be damned, I want new stories and characters to get attached to". I don't want King of the Hill or Futurama to come back, I love both those shows but damn it they had their time and it ended a while ago. Those slots should be filled by new shows made by new creators with new ideas, not reboots made for people still stuck in the past. I think this is a symptom of two things: One, the fact that it's so much easier for people to submerge themselves in nostalgia than any other time in history, hell you can go find old Toonami and Boomerang bumpers right here on KZbin with the click of a button. There are whole channels dedicated completely to nostalgia and people eat it up. Two, thanks to Disney messing up copyright, these companies own these shows forever and have control of their exclusivity, meaning they can keep digging them up forever until they get super stale, just look at what's happened to Star Wars and Star Trek. Compare that to a world where copyright length was much shorter (apparently with our abundance of media production it should only be 15 years of copyright at best) and these companies would be constantly looking for new ideas because the stuff they own was eventually gonna fall in the public domain where anyone could distribute it and make something new from it, which I would prefer much more. The only exception to the reboots in my opinion are shows that were cancelled before they could get a true finale like Samurai Jack and Clone High, not stuff like Ed, Edd n Eddy which had a great conclusive ending. As much I love those old Cartoon Network shows I'd take a new season of Primal or BallMasterz9000 over them coming back any day.

My biggest issue with reboots is that they try to make them different just to be modern. Personally, I want today's generation to learn to appreciate old stuff and not just reboots that try to follow today's trends. I think the characters living in the modern age, using modern technology and MAYBE wearing modern clothes and hair styles should be enough of a modernization, but no. The new team (or corporate executives) insist on changing the animation style and character designs (I'm looking at you Thunder cats, Veggietales and Bob the Builder), replacing the voice cast for supposedly the wrong reasons (I'm looking at you DuckTales, Muppet Babies, Tiny Toons and Powerpuff Girls), completely changing characters voices (I'm looking at you Veggietales), taking away the original's identity in favor of copying other generic kids shows (I"m looking at you Thomas and Friends), etc. There are some old things that still work on today's generation.

And the reboots of our childhood try to copy the trends of today's original shows. For example, Thomas the tank engine used to just do its own thing. It had lore, world building, the engines behaved like real engines, the settings were realistic, and it just didn't talk down to its target audience. Then along came Mattel. They took away all that in favor of turning Thomas into Paw Patrol, PJ Masks, whatever's trending now in preschool media and ignoring what the original creator had intended Thomas to be. Heck, he was heavily against his creations being bought by a big company and turned into a billion dollar franchise. I'm sure this never would've happened had Thomas stayed independent.

If there's one thing I can't stand about revivals, it's comic book continuations. You basically have to find every single issue of a comic series adapted from a show you loved watching but they're extremely hard to find in stores, there's a million of them if you're behind on them and you live in a overstuffed apartment and don't know where to put them. This is why I choose to watch videos that just show us the pages instead. I've had to do this for Smallville Season 11, Revolution Season 3 and I only just got started on Avatar The Promise.

PPG 2016 failed due to trying to capitalize on modern trends and derailing many characters. The Proud Family revival does do modern trends but still has the charm of the original show and the characterization (yet I wish Penny's friends can be better). A lot of people don’t realize though that as far back as the late 70s into the early 80s there was really this birth of the nostalgia wave, and we’ve been living the pattern ever since. The 1980s were basically a love letter to the 1950s the same way the 2010s were a revamped 80s. They saw how excited we get for reboots and revivals in 2016/2017 and its like they got the message mixed up. We dont need every cartoon to come back and even though its not something new, I think theres too much. I think cartoon reboots would be a less often thing to do. But I think they saw us asking for them to just show older tv shows and got confused and now just doing reboots and revivals. The old Thomas didn't talk down to little kids. It's not just the older fans who are upset by it. The original creator himself was heavily against this happening to his creations. He specifically wrote the stories to represent real trains and appeal to all ages and focus on lore and world building and make it unlike anything else on the market. What especially insults me is that they're gonna limit classic Barney to adult products and accessories, which is the same as saying the older fans need to keep the old version to themselves and it's too dated for today's generation, which isn't true. Little kids today can appreciate puppetry and some old things work just fine on them without reboots. I feel like the purpose of reboots is to talk kids out of watching old things. More terrifying things will come, eventually, but for the moment I can rest peacefully knowing that those _things_ are long dead. If we're truly lucky then we're hopefully not that far away from that faithful day on where TTG will meet the same merciless fate as the rest of its kind, _hopefully..._

Some do but not always the way I want them to. Mattel announced a Barney reboot in CGI with a makeover. The closest they're getting to respecting the long time fasn is creating products for adults with classic Barney on it. Here's the problem though, the old versions still work on today's generation and some of us wanna introduce little kids to the show the way we watched them and not just what's trending now. Limiting classic Barney to adult products is the same as saying today's generation is too young to be watching classic Barney, which is not true. They're saying the older fans should keep the old stuff to themselves and the new generation should only watch the modern stuff. Last year, I saw a one-year-old dancing to classic Barney clips from the 90s, meaning the old Barney still works on today's generation and it doesn't necessarily need a makeover in order for today's generation to enjoy it. It also means puppetry still works on today's little kids.

I think Pan Pizza mentioned this but something you didn't mention during the merch part of the video. Was that the kids that grew up with Powerpuff Girls and Rugrats are parents now and looking for toys to buy their kids. Like as a kid my mom when trying to get me different gifts would buy me the new My Little Pony toys and Scooby Doo toys. Because those were cartoon she knew from her childhood and figured I might also like. And if those parents are shopping and see a toy for a new PPG show they might go home and watch it with their kid or maybe even the old show. And if the kids like it the parents might want to bond over their love for the show thus fueling merch sales. Like my brother and dad over Transformers when those movies came out.

As a big Powerpuff Girls fan, I'm honestly mixed on Craig coming back. On one hand, it's in good hands, but on the other hand, I would prefer treating Powerpuff Girls as a franchise like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where it always had different showrunners for each show incarnation. Sure the 2016 reboot messed up a bit (even if I liked it), but that was more of a unique circumstance in that network executives were clearly ordering the showrunners to make it a loose sequel of the original show instead of a full-fledged reboot.

You know one show I'd actually be pretty interested in seeing rebooted? A show that was produced by Franch company Moonscoop called Code Lyoko. While Moonscoop did go bankrupt, another company called Darguad did buy up their assets, and it's pretty unlikely they wouldn't notice how popular CL has been. And frankly, a huge part of that show's story was technology, and technology has changed a lot in the past twenty years. So quite a bit about Code Lyoko would be reimagined to change it from an early 2000s set show to an early 2020s set one based on tech alone.

Honestly watching the Power Puff Girls (the one on HBO 2016 version) with my daughter has been a fun experience. She wasn't born yet at that time but watches it now in 2022. I remember people throwing fits over how awful it was. But seeing it through a child's point of view.... it wasn't really meant for us, the children of the 90s-00s. It was meant for a new generation with enough stupid jokes and references to be ok for a parent to listen to or passively watch. You can say it was for the old fans. They may have at least THOUGHT of the old fans and mentioned that but it was made for a new generation. A new set of kids. This is why Ash Ketchum stays young. He's said to be in an endless spring/summer of being a kid. Remember all of our merchandise? Nothing has changed. I wonder what the other PPG is like? They look CGI but kind of.

When thinking of animated reboots I love and nail fan-service, I immediately think of DuckTales and She-Ra (the artstyle of the latter is far from bad guys, but even if you hate it, it did insanely well). However, I will admit I’m impressed with how Cartoon Network has been caring for its reboots. While I never watched every episode of the following reboots, and probably never will, Ben 10 got a lot more respect while continuing and Teen Titans GO!’s longevity exceeded everyone’s expectations and is on the verge of being alongside pioneers like Regular Show and Adventure Time in terms of being one of the longest running Cartoon Network shows. But then the PowerPuff Girls, started off fine in the first few episodes and wasn’t THAT upset of the recast, but like 80% of the remainder of the show kinda made me lose interest. DC Super Hero Girls is probably one of the few examples of an above average reboot made for CN, probably since Lauren Faust created it and, similar to how she did MLP, it appealed to more than just young girls and got boys and adults engaged with it.

(Sorry, I went on a long tangent so I moved it to the bottom). I used to use video games and cartoons as a form of escapism from my depression, but now we are getting cruddy reboot after cruddy reboot so much so that I feel as if the magic is dead, and even IF there is one show that is phenomenal and has heart and passion put into it there's the price tag of supporting a massive company that does the DUMBEST decisions and mishandles properties just so they can have a monopoly on people's childhoods in some messed up dick measuring contest that we call life. * ...which they not only completely missed the mark when coming to girl role models, but also shooting scenes and later THANKING a site that is best described as a Concentration Camp. That's not even mentioning the hypocrisy with the lead actress supporting Hong Kong police in the riots while also getting FERAL at James Gunn for making "RuDe TwEeTs" a few years ago.
