I think the reason why I was so comfortable drawing the stiff figures is because I actually am a very stiff person in real life, and whenever I looked in the mirror for reference, I typically was like, "yup, that's right." I never realized how much of a problem it was until I was like, "huh, I wish my drawings had more personality than me..."

Oh god I've been drawing for five (Almost six) years now and I still do the middle thing... This video not only made me smile but was EXTREMELY helpful. (I was expecting some sped up time thing with subtext or a person with the world's most boring voice speaking. Not someone who made me laugh and just kind of talked about their thoughts. ;3; ) I'm gonna have to try the bubble thing. It all makes sense why all my drawings are stiff as sticks now, because stick figures are abominations! x'D Thank you so much! ;3; You actually made me wanna draw really curvy girls but I actually think doing some serious flat guys WITHOUT FLAT SPINES would be fun too... Because girl or guy they might not be stiff... x'D

You are so right about the Stick figure thing. It may seem like a good idea but it really isn't and it can result in very stiff drawings. I never could really grasp that style myself and I tried for years but it just felt so strange and usually when I finished the stick figure, I had a hellish time drawing the body shape over it, it was terrible. The method you do is a little similar to what I do though you do it a lot better (I have to admit I do need to practice more with the gesture method). But yeah thanks for going in depth about why the stick method isn't as full proof as one would think. Great vid, very helpful! :D

This is actually a pretty helpful video. I've improved greatly on my anatomy and have found my drawing style, but always found my posing to be incredibly stiff and I could never tell why. So I'll definitely keep this in mind as I go forwards. Hopefully this and starting to finally get into gesture drawing will help my posing a lot.

If I ever use the stick figure method, it's usually just to give me an idea of the pose I'm drawing, and then I make a new layer and go over it with a more smooth and "realistically correct" version. Really I think the stick figure method is a great way to guide you but if you ever use it, make the actual sketch more smooth and less-stiff.
