I have the flattest feet on earth. Podiatrists loved me. Custom orthotics since as early as I can recall. A few years ago I changed over (gradually!) to minimal “barefoot” shoes (mostly Vivos but some Lems and Xeros) and once I had fully transitioned, I had much less foot pain, knee pain, hip pain, back pain etc than I ever did with orthotics and big “motion control” or “stability” shoes. If you have flat feet or low arches: you can do this. It will help. Despite what any podiatrist or physiatrist etc tells you.

This happened to me! I have heavy flat feet and been wearing nike's for over 10 years, bought another pair last summer without realizing they were barefoot shoes. My feet were in so much pain the first week just from my daily walks and I couldn't understand why, I thought they were just a bad pair of shoes haha! But after about 1-2 weeks I noticed the pain was gone and I was walking a lot lighter on my feet, putting weight more on my mid-foot to forefoot instead of my heel. I was able to shift this to my running form and it has helped me a lot to minimize pain/injuries!

I have always ran around barefoot and didnt really like conventional shoes. Until I found the barefoot style shoes around 5 years ago also and can never go back to regular shoes. It feels awesome actually, you can balance better and more naturally cause your feet adapt to the terrain. What sucks about the barefoot shoes tho is that a lot of them arent very durable and it's hard to find affordable ones that arent quirky bright hipster colors made of vegan materials that make your feet stink. I know they will grow in popularity and hopefully they come up with some good leather work-ish boots. Or more rugged shoes that actually hold up to hardcore hikes off the trail

I wear wolverine boots, they still have a heel and a rubber sole, but they only lift about 3/4” and the sole is very flexible. I work in construction so I have to wear heavy steel toe boots constantly. For about 10 years now daily, and so I actually bought some ugg boots (because they’re like 4wd slippers, and good in the snow, and slip on) and got some pretty serious foot pain as those have very little support. But, it was sort of a good pain, not like something was broken but like muscle growth.

Currently going through this process of foot toughening and strengthening. I have had soft-ass baby feet my entire life. Even 12 hour shifts in boots never really caloused my feet. If anything, it made everything worse, from back problems, knees, weak ankles, etc. Been wearing Xero Prio 100% of the time for about 2 months or so. Slowly getting better. Toes are spreading more, arches are stronger, toes stronger. Sore as a mofo some days, tho. Now I'm relearning how to walk, trying not to heel strike so hard. At the moment, my heels are taking a beating, but overall this has been a game changer for me. I live in the desert so there's no shortage of hard, irregular, and pointy surfaces to walk on. Nice video guys. I hope people get some really good info from this.

How has your soreness been? I switched to wearing Minimalist Altras almost 100% of time about 5 months ago and still find myself pretty sore everyday and dealing with discomfort. I came from wearing “normal/traditional” Nikes with heel drop, arch support, crammed toe box, etc. I sadly used to wear my old traditional shoes from the moment the sun came up to the moment I put my head on my pillow at night
@jpizzleforizzle
@jpizzleforizzle Жыл бұрын
@@christianperi well, I went all in. Haven't worn a "regular" shoe since putting my Xero Prio's on the first time. I get a little soreness on top of my right big toe sometimes, and a little bit of sensitivity on my left fibular sesamoid (had to look that up) just inside the ball of my big toe. But most of the overall soreness is gone. Muscles are strengthening, bones are getting used to making more contact on hard surfaces like concrete, toes are splaying out more, arches are stronger, and my right pinkie toe doesn't sit underneath anymore which is hella nice cause I've had nerve damage on the outside from years of long hours in bad shoes and boots. It's changed the way I walk for sure, more midfoot and forefoot than heel-toe as before. Definitely still an ongoing process with a lot of new neuromuscular connections to build over time. Benefits clearly outweigh any initial discomfort. I mean, there's days where I'm like "damn, I really want to jump into my Vans with those ultra cush insoles", but I know my toes would hate me for it. Unfortunately I haven't skated at all since the switch, but I'll figure that out when I pick up my new midlife crisis hobby (skateboarding) again soon. One thing to remember: don't neglect foot massage and stretching every day, or at least when you're really feeling it. Use toe spreaders or lacing your fingers through your toes and moving stuff around a bit every day feels really good, keeps everything mobile and gives your toes a good lateral stretch.

@@jpizzleforizzle Glad to see its been going good for you! For me its just been on and off soreness and discomfort for months and months. My feet were super weakened by the chronic “normal” shoe wearing. I’ve been doing strengthening exercises for my feet and walking more barefoot. My feet have just been so sensitive and hate all the new pressures and sensations. I’m constantly getting weird pains in different parts of my foot. I also never took my socks off until it was time to change them each 24-48 hour period, even wore them to bed. So that may have contributed to my brain turning off all the unused nerve endings in my foot (my left one is the one with these issues, right has been great with the process). I made the switch back around September 1 so its been 5 months now. Ive now decided to switch between my old shoes and my new altras and whitins throughout the days to sort of give myself a break. Were you barefoot at all before your transition or did you at least take your shoes off when returning home? That’s something good to have done beforehand that has helped alot of people through quicker transitions from what I read
@jpizzleforizzle
@jpizzleforizzle Жыл бұрын
@@christianperi I never really walked barefoot much, even as a kid, unless at a beach or a pool, rarely anywhere else. Ive worn shoes of some type inside for a long time unless it was evening or I was in bed. My feet were baby soft, and super sensitive. I still don't walk outside barefoot much. Mostly because for the last 1.5 years I've been in Arizona and the desert here is full of critters, thorns, and sharp rocks. Not to mention for a good bit of the year the ground is hot enough to literally burn you. So tl;dr... No. This is all new to me. I take my shoes off whenever I can, do my stretches, massage, etc. Just being patient with the process.
@christianperi

@@jpizzleforizzle Yeah sounds about like me. I think I was more barefoot as a kid, but stopped being as much once I started my early teens. Now I know that was a bad idea. Wear thick socks, and take it slow. Push just enough to where you’re starting to hurt. Then stretch and rest. When walking, focus on your steps, for me I was heel striking too hard. Now I “glide” like this video mentions. But take it slow, after a few weeks you’ll notice being able to go longer. It’s like progressive overload when weight training. Can’t go too fast, otherwise it’ll be detrimental. Let your body recover. Don’t be afraid to “take a day off” and wear regular shoes for a day or two to rest at first.

Probably because they put an unnatural amount of mileage on their feet and actually need the cushion. For most ppl the cushion just makes their feet weaker.

I've been wearing barefoot shoes for 2 years now, different brands. Since 2 months my Achilles tendon has now thickened considerably and also started to hurt. Before wearing BF shoes I had rather hollow feet. Maybe the stretch is too big now to walk on flat soles from 4 to 6mm all the time...? Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this or what causes this and what I could do...???

I know they are a sponsor but honestly barefoot shoes are kinda bullshit. Sure they can train your feet a little and help a marginal amount but it's not like it's an around fix. If you look at most top level runners none of them use barefoot shoes because regular shoes are better.

Pull a heavy sled in barefoot shoes then do the same in a runner. Sometimes the cushion is a good thing sometimes it's bad. For anybody with Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis cushioned shoes are not better and make those conditions worse. Barefoot shoes have basically cured those issues for me until I wear a raised heel shoe.
