Bad distractions are just avoiding the OCD thoughts, which doesn't work. The best thing to do is, if you are already doing something (exercising, working, cooking etc.) and an OCD thought comes in, just keep focusing on what you were already doing. If you're sitting down and get an OCD thought and suddenly say 'oh, better start cooking!', that's a bad distraction.

I have found delaying useful in some cases. Other themes I have had experiences of delaying literally months and not getting relief. At a certain point you break down. It is as though the OCD knows the tactic and says, "no problem, you want to delay? We can play this game, I have ALL the time in the world." And it hangs out in the background sapping me of energy and making the quality of my life diminish as the weeks go by.

Thank you for all you are doing for us ❤🌹 The urge of doing computations to avoid bad things happening is just killing. Is delaying them with the hope that they get less powerful a good technique to get rid of this mons. Thank you again.

I have a really tough time telling if something is a compulsion or a just an healthy activity by choice. I am at a low and my brain feels fried. Depression, Anxiety and OCD is quite the combo. Thinking too much about this also seems like my OCD is acting up haha.

Please please answer me Why is it that whenever i think about doing something productive my ocd comes up
@EndYourOCD
@EndYourOCD 21 сағат бұрын
When you are doing something or thinking about something at the same time as something else, those thoughts become linked in your brain. 'Neurons that fire together, wire together' is referencing this phenomenon. You've linked 'productive thoughts' with your OCD topic, that's why it comes up each time.

This is my question Is it true to use a distraction to not do a compulsion Please answer

Thanks a lot Nathan for all of the great content you are sharing. I have a question that makes me feel stuck. I know it is an obsession but it also has a valid point. I get stuck when an obsession makes sense. I call it ocd of ocd. What should be the appoach in this type of situations? This morning i was anxious and there was a thought race going on in my mind. I decided to give my attention to something related to my work instead of continue racing in my anxious loop. I decided to do this because i know it helps. I know if i pay attention to something else, the grip and the power of the distressing thought loosens and i feel better. Less then 5 minutes into that ocd questioned my intention. ??? But i am doing this to make the thought and anxiety lose its power??? but that means i am trying to neutralize it or escape from it??? I am ultimately looking to get relief from the anxiety.???? This is not right, this is not acceptance.??? this is hiding in distraction, this is hiding in busyness????? I think and believe my behaviour is a healthy distraction but at the same time has some compulsive intentions too. I know my response should be something like "may be may be not, i don't know, i take the risk of feeding my ocd, who cares? But also it will help if someone can shed some light on this type of paradoxes.

I kinda see what your saying and I believe thoughts can be compulsions but I think your scared that distractions is a compulsion. You could say maybe distraction is, maybe not. Most likely your just putting your focus elsewhere instead of the ocd and going about your day. If you mentally force yourself to think about something different and it's distressing and causing anxiety and only very short relief it's probably mental compulsions. I'd just go with maybe, maybe not and moving onto new thoughts. Because what you focus on will be more of the thoughts you get, so no you don't want to focus on ocd thoughts either way.. idk if this makes sense
