There is actually a reason as to why the Transformers theme has not been used in any of the movies. So buckle up for a history lesson. Up until 2007, the a variation of the Transformers theme was used in almost every Transformers cartoon. These themes didn't just straight up copy the original theme, they each switched out parts and removed others. But in 2007, Transformers Animated used a cover of the original theme that was VERY similar. So Anne Bryant (The composer of the original theme) sued Sunbow Productions (The company that produced the original show). Meanwhile, the band Black Lab were making a cover of the 1986 Lion version of the theme to be used in the movie. Paramount saw the lawsuit going down and realised that Sony had brought Sunbow, so Sony technically owned the rights to the theme. Now, since Paramount and Sony were both part of the Digital Cinema Initiatives this meant they could share the rights to the theme. Anne Bryant lost the case, but Paramount and Sony didn't want to rick another lawsuit, so Black Lab's version of the theme was not used in the movie and the theme has not been used in any other pieces of Transformers media since. Except for a brief scene in Transformers 4. I think I may have a few facts mixed up but this is mainly from memory.

I think Shin Godzilla pulled this off really well, using the recognizable Godzilla theme for when we finally see Shin's fourth form, and using the classic military theme for when th humans are gearing up for the climax, but also adding new songs with the same solemn orchestral feel as the original OST while adding a new element of opera-esque vocals that give it an even more haunting and provocative effect.

Well, you got your wish with Power Rangers, sort of: there was maybe 30 seconds of the original theme in the actual movie, but they used the 1995 movie version, for some reason. There WAS a new version recorded by the score's composer, but they only used it in the credits, as far as I remember. The score was nice, though. Synthwave-inspired, with occasional orchestral flair.

5:27 Actually, that would work against the Transformers, as a primary objective of the franchise lore as a whole is to establish that these are well-versed, established characters, not just machine. They’re alive and fully sentient, with distinct personalities. So to have the Autobots have a more traditional (and majestic) heroic theme in Arrival to Earth actually works more in the favor of the characters.
@JackLively4 жыл бұрын
People just cry when there favourite old thing isn't in the new thing. Everyone's guilty of it. Like people's reaction to the Superman theme not being in Man of Steel. I much prefer the MoS music, but I can appreciate John William's themes too. They just don't fit MoS. Sometimes it's justified to get upset, like when there's no respect for the original and it's done in a haphazard, careless manner. But the music for the Transformers live-action films, no matter what you think of the films themselves, is really good.
@imfsresidentotaku96999 ай бұрын
No, it wouldn't "work against the Transformers." An electronic score does not automatically convey that the characters are "just machine." That's very lazy thinking. Brad Fiedel described his synthesizer-based music for The Terminator as being about "a mechanical man and his heartbeat." Even the original Transformers cartoon had a rich underscore that combined traditional orchestral arrangements with electronic elements.
@IfYouSeekCaveman8 жыл бұрын
This is interesting, but I see a far more simpler pattern that you elude to in this video. Big studio films are afraid to "be fun" or take risks in any way. At some point relatively recently, it was decided that all Blockbuster films should have tonally serious orchestral scores, regardless of what the film is actually about.
@imbatman19957 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing. There's a distinct fear of cheesiness. A good example of the contrast comes from Wonder Woman: when she does her No-Man's-Land walk, the music is super epic and somber, but in the next scene when she's fighting the guys in the building, it gets cheesy (in a good way) with the electric cello theme from BvS. The director of the film has talked about how films should be less afraid of cheesiness.
@SchulzEricT6 жыл бұрын
imbatman1995 If they weren't afraid of cheesiness they would've used Wonder Woman's theme song as the theme song. Another guy did a really good video about that specifically, how comic book movies fail when they're afraid to be true to the source material, largely because of directors (or whomever, some creative minds) being ashamed of the source material. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXO7gWiOdtCDqpY Which opens with a topical comment about the X-Men theme (that wasn't used for the relatively shitty X-Men movies... not going to go into the movies in detail but I do feel compelled to mention: it's a shame that they so underutilized James Marsden. He is such a likeable, charismatic actor; I think he could've done for Cyclops something akin to what Chris Evans has done for Captain America: humanized him and made him likeable while remaining true to his roots as an earnest, boy scout type of hero).
@leucbinh73978 жыл бұрын
If you listen to the little piece of music from Spiderman Homecoming theme from the Comic Con panel you can clearly hear the theme from the Spiderman Cartoon in the 60s which is AWESOME considering how remakes or reboots nowadays usually go with the safe route of making an entirely different theme.

Great video. The only big exception I would have is the Schumacher movie's score. Even though was different, it is a pretty good one too, and it kinda did what you explained on your other video about Suicide Squad and how it was combining Elfman's and Zimmer. Here it's like a combination of the dark feeling but at the "action moments" would have more of the 60's Batman vibe, which the two films tried to combine also visually (what Burton did plus with the TV show). In my opinion, that theme feels more Batman-like than the ones Zimmer did.

I don't think it's nearly as easy as you're making it out to be. For instance, John Williams had a lot of things to work with for The Force Awakens, but that also wasn't all that great of a soundtrack. But for Empire Strikes Back, even though he had A TON of excellent themes and leitmotifs from the first, he still had to write something like an hour and 20 minutes of new music. I think TFA and ESB are actually perfect examples of the difference that can be made when effort is put in.
@Euroflounder6 жыл бұрын
I think it's fair to say that a sequel needs a substantial amount of new music added around the established themes to make its soundtrack exceptional, but that's still much easier than creating a whole new soundtrack from scratch. And, a 'wasn't all that great' soundtrack is, logically, a little bit great.
@barthomero7216 жыл бұрын
Well, but also The Force Awakens didn't do much of an effort in making an original star wars movie so Williams didn't had that much of an opportunity yo create a new Duel Of The Fates or Battle Of The Heroes, he dind't had that chance in tlj because as we all know, it's empire and return of the jedi with boring scenes and with bad leads

I agree, from a purely musical sense it's one of my favorites. However, I think he raises a good point. The gorgeous orchestral sound doesn't necessarily evoke the feeling cars that turn into giant robots and shoot each other should probably evoke. That comes from the direction Bay took it- the whole film is more pretentious than it should be, but the music fits and even defines that pretense perfectly. So it's doing its job extremely well, but its job sucks.

Your words were prophetic once again! When you discussed musical continuity within sequels, I was immediately reminded of “Justice League” and how Elfman decided to ditch all the Junkie XL/Zimmer themes and just repurpose his old stuff. It was honestly jarring and really disappointing, in all honesty.

I never liked Star Wars, and the music is/was a big part of my dislike. Half the time you get that background music that in noway fits what is happening on screen.

"And the only teenagers who listen to that kind of soundtrack become me" Me: wants to become something in the direction of physics, but still likes orchestras

A great example of updating an original theme in a reboot was with Spiderman Homecoming. They took the original cartoon theme song and made it this up beat fast orchestral song (plus some electric guitar in there for kicks) during the marvel logo in the beginning. Its something familiar but interesting and new enough for this movie
