One important problem that was entirely missed here: Software support. There are plenty of phones with easily-replaceable batteries, but even if you could keep finding batteries for that phone forever, even the best Android phones stop getting security patches in 3 years, and iPhones and Chromebooks stop getting them in 5 years. And that's from when they first started to be sold, and those are among the best options we have. What that means is, even if the hardware lasted ten years, your phone would be a security nightmare for at least five of those years unless something changes dramatically. And that's if you buy a _good_ phone. It's easily possible to buy a cheap Android phone and have the updates stop in less than a year. It doesn't have to be like this -- if a PC is actually getting to be 10 years old, you might have other problems, but you can usually at least keep upgrading the software. Even when Microsoft finally stops security patches to old OSes (they supported Windows XP for *twelve years*), you can buy a new OS, or download a free one. But even the "download a free one" option is kind of broken on phones.

You can update an Android phone unofficially by rooting it and choosing a custom ROM for your phone that has the latest software. Most of the ROMs are community supported, so the support probably last longer than the support from the manufacturers themselves. Though, this step is risky and can make your phone totally useless (bricked) if you don't do it right, but you can reuse your older phone if you successfully do it. I turned my old phone into a "benchmark and development kit" to test my personal projects to see how they run on older hardware.

That is not even the problem. All these technologies are rather obsolete... Batteries could already be better and have longer lifespans or could be constructed in a customer-friendly way. (Nokia figured that out decades ago) The problem is (much like lightbulbs), companies dont want that to happen. Because if the lifespan of a phone doubles, they sell half as much as they would with a low quality phone. And we have seen that with apple for years. They remove customer-friendly technology and call it "innovation" (e.g. their own charging device or their own headphones) and they steadily reduce battery lifespans and durability, yet they ramp up the prices. They do it every year and every year people buy their stuff... so why would they ever wanna change that?

no, it took a ridiculous amount of public and political attention, energy saving regulations, insanely profitable technology and a stronger performance at lower cost... led light is just so much better than lightbulbs and the possibility to sell them is from the early 90s... it took 20 years for this lobby to fall and it even took laws FORCING people or public places to use them. if anything that is proof that phones will have this problem atleast for another 5 decades...

What the industrialized world needs is a policy change requiring manufacturers to be responsible for the disposal of the goods they produce. So TV makers would be responsible for collecting old, returned tvs and disposing/recycling them responsiblity. This would dramatically reduce waste, and with a program such as refunds to technology users (much like bottle returns), people would be incentivized to return their obsolete/useless technology items in order not to lose any deposit they paid for it.

This should be a personal issue not a business one. I sell all of my old phones and if I don't need something I find someone who does. I purchase nearly everything used (car, phones, TV, computer, etc.) and once I am done using it sell it back. The problem is a bad mindset. Buying things used and selling them used also means a net loss of nearly nothing. Its what is best for the environment and your wallet.
@Roxor1287 жыл бұрын
Not a bad idea. Require the customer be paid 10% of the product's retail price for returning the product and that the manufacturer cover the shipping costs. So, buy your TV for $500 in 2015, then when it releases a cloud of smoke and breaks down in 2020, send it back to the manufacturer and get $50 back at no extra cost to you.

Great comment... & Very much agree. Until last month I was still using my Samsung Galaxy Europa I bought back in 2011, despite the fact I could no longer use any of my apps as they had removed/updated the google play store that it used to use... It was a shame, because it felt almost like being forced to upgrade, even for someone who had no desire for most apps... When google maps stopped working, that was a little sad, although I could at least still use it as a functioning phone. The fact they have removed 2G in most countries means that most people who had absolutely no desire for any kind of smart phone, literally have no choice but to upgrade, unless they go mobile-phone-free... That's a little sad. Somewhat unrelated, but a happier note to end on... The 2011 Samsung Galaxy Europa phone I thought I could no longer use as of last month (as it stopped being able to charge), turns out I found a way to keep using it 😊 I simply needed to buy a simple $4 external battery charger 😊 So the good news is, if you're determined to keep using something, there are often ways to prolong its life... You just have to think outside the box a little 😊 All the best everyone ❤ Emma from Australia.

And that's how it should be done! tl;dr: Enjoying recent tech doesn’t mean we have to waste Earth's precious finite resources. Instead of letting them rot in a drawer, we need to upcycle our old devices (or just sell them - I'd much rather buy a 1 year old iPhone X in good condition, than a brand new iPhone 7 for a similar price), and IMHO most importantly - we must start dealing with the 'Apple syndrome', AKA the upgrade addiction. I’ve fixed my personal electronics numerous times. When my iPod Classic got broken a few years ago (and it was already really dated at the time and had lots of visual wear and tear), I preferred to pay ~$50 for the repair instead of buying a new one or upgrading. The same deal with android phones and tablets. I'm quite a geek/techie/DIY guy, so I generally repaired them myself (and I must confess - replacing the touch panel in an old 7” tablet made me feel proud AF :D). Nowadays my daily drivers are: iPhone SE, iPad (2018) and MBA (early 2015). Each one of them was bought only after my previous phone/tablet/notebook was either a) broken beyond repair/totaled, or b) sold for a fair price to a friend or acquaintance in need. I plan to use them as long as Apple supports them, then sell them and put the money towards a newer, equivalent model. When the batteries get worn out, I'll just replace the MacBook one myself (95€ kit by ifixit) and the others will be replaced by my local Apple Store (just $35 for the iPhone one). If anything gets broken (but the device is not totaled, ofc), they WILL get repaired, as I hate doing unplanned upgrades (AKA throwing away still usable devices).

Sell your old devices for cheap on Ebay and at garage sales. Hell, even Goodwill and most thrift stores take smartphones nowadays. Re-use is even better than recycling, plus you get money back. A lot of people can and will use these older phones, especially younger people. Even flip phones still have a significant base of users. Even if its' broken, put it on the market for parts, and the repair scene being talked about here will eat it up to keep other phones going. Also, you can keep using old, outdated phones that no longer get Android updates by installing an open-source android version like LineageOS, which is getting ready to launch Android Oreo on phones as old as the Galaxy Note II. The biggest thing is you just don't /need/ a new phone. A note II with an updated OS is still a perfectly capable smartphone capable of doing every single thing you need it to do and still run very smooth. I know so many people that could save thousands of dollars and reduce so much waste by just realizing their whole family doesn't need a new smartphone and tablet every two years. The old one is perfectly fine. Smartphones and cell phones, especially if you replace the battery and treat it with care, will last decades just like your car can if you treat it well. The idea you need to replace them constantly is created by Apple, its' disgusting practice of planned obsolescence, its' disgusting practice of purposefully getting in the way and trying to stop repairability at every turn in legal action and actual design of the phone, designed to prevent any tampering, and its' disgusting practice of filling phones with massive amounts of bloatware, all to pressure you into buying a new, shinier, thinner phone you don't need so they can make money. The Iphone X is the ultimate example, the ultimate epitome and symbol of this wasteful norm that is modern smartphone. It is not necessary for anyone to own as the Iphone 8 is still a very high-end smooth-as-ice fast phone, massively overpriced, is marketed universally for its' physical design, look, and features its' competitors like Samsung have had for three years, pretending that Apple just invented it today and they've never heard of it before. And... 3D emojis???

I was just researching about ways to recycle my gadget graveward. Nice timing on the video. Fairphone has compromised on bulkiness. Swapping the display or the battery is not a daily task. So a couple of screws on the way is no issue. Most phones, changing the display is a challenge even for technicians. So simplifying it, is vital. Battery is a risk which we all choose the ignore. Especially after the Samsung issue, it has to be a main issue.

The hardware is not the only reason why a smartphone becomes obsolete. - If you are lucky you get about 3 years of security updates and maybe 1 or 2 upgrades for an Android smartphone. - And that's it! After that the OS becomes more and more obsolete and less compatible with apps. It also becomes a ticking security bomb.

And the ecoATM scans the cellphone, you have a drop in for the charging cable, within 20 mins you have between $30 to $100 dollars (or more if the cell it's in perfect condition). I've been using a Fairphone 4 since it released and *_love it!_* If I drop it and some part breaks on it, including the screen, camera, etc., or I want to upgrade at some point, I just replace _only that part_ because Fairphone keeps inventory of those and makes them easy to swap out. And unlike old phones, these are well designed so no battery-falling-out issues. I think this was a missed opportunity to show that Fairphone's business model works by changing the "buy a new one" business model of Apple and other brands.
