You are one of two KZbin tutorial artists I recommend. You stay on topic and keep the information flowing in an easy to understand way. Grateful for your videos as they help push me to get better.

Great video. I take everything you said on board - but I’d still prefer to have the LH version on my wall. It looks more painterly to me. Each to their own I guess.

As a beginner I find this helpful. I think a lot of the scribbling stuff I do is honestly just so I don't stop and get hooked into perfectionism. Also I think it makes me feel arty 🤣🤣🤣! Your explanation about how the extra scribbles affect value really hit home for me. Great vid, thanks Toby.

This is a brilliant demonstration. I like both sketches but the clear lines in the second one leave all your options open to express yourself whereas the first one closes them down. I will definitely try to incorporate this into my sketches. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I was taught line drawing in Art class at age 13, 1972. It was refined when I got to High School. Back tben I just couldn't sketch as loose as I would have liked to. I still went places with my art. It is nice decades later to have you help me brush up on the techniques. Thank you so much for confidence.

Great lesson, Toby! The challenge is to combine looseness and economy of line with intention. Scribbling often comes from uncertainty.

I drew my first pet portrait ever for a friend. To be honest, Im shocked how close the likeness is and how realistic it looks. I cant believe I drew it. But then, i took a picture of it and looked up close. OMG, it looks TERRIBLE up close. It looks like a 1st grader drew it, like hen scratch. But when i back away, it looks so much better. Is this normal? I looked at experienced artists sketches and they look good even up close.

Art is supposed to be viewed from a distance, looking close will be a different experience of course

Funnily enough, I still like the left side better! Hmm, why? Cause I'm squigly myself? Maybe. Or cos I'm lefthanded? Who knows? Or maybe that it's I just like messes? Hm... yeah.... looks more like it. 😁
