Since I started with yoga, I'm used to workout barefoot, so is a relief to know that I'm not "comitting a crimen" by doing strengh training that way. I just to have flat feet when I was a child so I'm not quite sure if I should go for the toe's spreader or pass
@JustinaErcole2 жыл бұрын
Hmm I’m not totally sure about the toe spacers. But definitely continue barefoot training, and that arch lift exercise will be key for you!

Yes! Shoe or lack of shoe choice during your workout matter! I notice that when my feet aren't doing the right things when I lift I end up in pain. Thankfully I've corrected it and have been able to use exercises to fix the pain. Also, love Squat University, their videos helped fixed my squat.

Thanks for addressing the body dysmorphia . I worked out today at F45. Felt so great strong during class then absolutely hated the way I look in the group picture taken after class. I had to really work to focus on the positive ( STRONG and getting fitter) and not get caught up in negative self talk.

I’d like to hear more about “big toe mobility.” I often have a tough time with reverse lunges when the left foot is in the rear. (I’m definitely in the process of setting up an appointment with an MD.)

I totally agree, working out barefoot made a huge difference for me in my stability and control! I also use toe spacers after a long day in shoes 😊

Altra shoes are absolutely great for this too, zero drop and large toe box, they genuinely saved my ankles.

I switched to the Les Mills Reebok shoes and they are a game changer for weight lifting and cardio....anyway, that's not my point. I literally needed to hear the statement and walk through about the not feeling good in my body part....thanks for that. Was feeling that way this morning, thanks period, and needed to hear that from someone I admire so much. 😘

Also noticed that when I use my super thick yoga mat, I get stability issues even when barefoot so would recommend no mat for standing and a dense rubber mat like peloton’s reversible one for ground work if needed

@ amazed u still check comments after 2 years. Been testing out transitioning to barefoot shoes in general even when not training. Going well so far but too early for me to know what my ultimate experience will be. Think that could be a fun topic for you to cover but I know shoes is not your area of expertise

When I started strength training with your programs, I was afraid to drop the weights on my bare feet. I think this was because I had only ever lifted significant weight in a gym setting, where that's a safety issue to consider. But I definitely love being able to do my workouts at home so that I *can* do the strength exercises in bare feet--I'm much more successful and have better form that way!

As I mentioned on your IG, I’ve worked out barefoot due to laziness lol. Nice to know there’s a benefit! I do have wide feet though, so maybe subconsciously that’s why I tend to workout barefoot. It’s more comfortable. I recently bought some wide sized Reebok’s for work, and they are so comfortable! I’ll check out your recommendations. Thanks!

There are MANY reasons why a lot of the shoes that people use are really bad for the kinds of workouts. I spent a couple of years working in a running store (and we sold Ultraboosts), and I know a lot about athletic shoes. MOST shoes that people wear are actually running shoes. There's a big heel-toe offset (typically anywhere from 6mm-12 mm) to promote landing on the ball of the foot and propelling the foot off the ground in the middle of a running motion. That's great for running--it can promote quicker leg turnover and set the foot up for success in executing the motion of running. Also, a lot of running shoes tend to be constructed so that the fabric or material on the side walls of the foot is either strategically stiffer or somehow designed to promote minimal to no sideways motion of the foot. It helps promote foot (and ankle) stability, AND by keeping the foot in its lane--faced forward to move forward--helps keep the foot's bones and muscles as safe as possible while--essentially--making sure that the shoe "does its part" in minimizing the chance of blisters (which happens easily as an inflamed and sweaty foot rubs against other fabrics...but dry wicking technical socks also need to be in the picture to do their part). But it's a big no-no to wear running shoes for other workouts: a foot encouraged to stay facing forward with the leg encouraged to stay facing forward doesn't help when you do speed skaters or other plyometric movements. A foot that is in a shoe where the heel is necessarily placed higher than the ball of the foot, and for the entire shoe designed to (as you said in your video) absorb the shock of impact (foot to ground) while running while propelling the foot in the running motion doesn't allow for foot and ankle stability in movements where the feet need to be stable and flat to the ground to support other dynamic muscle engagement (think: bent rows, thrusters, push presses, etc.). Nike Metcons are expensive. Reebok Nanos are expensive. (But they can also be found on sale sometimes...) Other companies do make cross trainers that take all of these things into consideration--a shoe with a supportive enough sole to take on the shock of impact during, say, a zillion burpees, plyo lunges, and tuck jumps while also keeping the foot (& leg) stable and grounded enough to handle thrusters, upright rows, and overhead tricep extensions. They're not the easiest to find from other mainstream brands, because it seems like there is HUGE market saturation in either urnning shoes or "specialty" shoes like No Bulls (crosstrainers, but marketed for CrossFit) or lifting shoes. Running shoes are also expensive. And many brands are VERY sneaky to have shoes available in "less expensive" big box stores (Famous Footwear, Kohls, etc.)--even though they're not the same shoe and don't really have product specs available or targeted activities available. Popular brands at these stores pretty much are shoes made with the scraps of what's sold at a higher pricepoint to get the approximate look and feel without any tried-and-tested information to align nicely-priced shoes with different purposes or activities. As for barefoot exercise: I practice bodypump at home in bare feet. It's OK. I do better when I am wearing my Nanos, in large part because there is a good amount of cardio despite the strength-focus in a BP workout and I like having the wider toe bed to let my toes spread wide while liking the sole to help absorb the shock of impact with fast lunges, clean & presses, dynamic high pulls, etc. Having that sole under my foot--while relatively flat and relatively stiff--has JUST enough give to offer a bit more support beneath my high arches. (And when I walk and when I used to run, I don't put on shoes for that without insoles that are molded to the shape of my arches. Or else there is so much pain!!!!) That could be a factor for some people--the shape and height (or lack of height) in their arches and needing more support underfoot. *shrug* Neither here nor there. Good suggestions on foot-strengthening moves, and a lovely video to watch on my lunch break :)

Dude after doing heavy lunges at the gym yesterday and feeling so OFF the entire time, I’m realizing that stability is my issue and taking the shoes off might be the solution. I wear pretty flat, minimal shoes for lifting but they’re still a barrier and definitely don’t allow me to grip the floor with my feet or feel all four “corners” on the ground.

I LOVE footwork (not in the creepy internet way LMAO). When I stretch and strengthen my feet, my runs and balance feel so much better. Plus, we don't give our feet enough credit for literally doing nearly everything for us. Be kind to them!

Yay! I always work out barefoot and was afraid you were going to say to wear shoes. I can’t imagine wearing shoes, would be so uncomfortable. I may have missed this part because I have no attention span today, but Is it ok to do dance videos (I do Emkfit and Kyra pro)shoeless too? Or mainly just strength training workouts?

That's why once or twice a week I use a barefoot fusion/cardio style workout. Think a Jessica Smith fusion workout or one of the many Ellen Barrett workouts like barefoot cardio or grace & gusto. Ellen preaches the benefit of foot focus care, and all her workouts (low impact) are done barefoot.

Never worked out barefoot (yoga exception) then here comes Justina and slaps the truth in my face: I SUCK at stability! If Justina says, Mirosa does, then... barefoot it is! Just a question, what about strenght & conditioning/cardio workouts with very intense jumping? Is it safe to stay barefoot in those? Thank you my dear
