Georgia, started in 2016. I sell a service, not goods. I build and install cabinetry, and anything else wood related. I restore historic windows, install doors, build small decks (with a focus on the stairs), frame walls, and obviously any type of trim work (think DFW). I have SO much work that I send clients to friends, and I don't advertise. To God be the Glory, I'm always booked 3-6 months out. There are too many people looking for a quick profit. Go listen to essential craftsman, you NEED to work harder not necessarily just "smarter".

Matt you and your wife are shining stars. It was nothing short of noble how you started woodworking out of necessity. I thank God for allowing us to produce with our hands every day. May you make Big Money woodworking!🙌I’m 21 years old from Long Island NY and have no bigger aspiration to woodwork professionally in my own shop. It’d be an honor if I can send you some pictures of my work Thanks.

hearing you guys talk about that table reminds me of my grandfather talking about the great depression, he never called it that, and I never realized it until years later, but the way he would talk about them eating only bread with butter on it for dinner.... it made you want to go eat that instead of anything else you could go eat. I didn't get the sense that "we had to eat this" or that you guys "had to eat at that table".... I get the sense that yo "got to" as apposed to eating nothing at all, or having no table, what a celebration that you have food, that you had a table to sit around together.... that you had each other... I can't help but think your ability to give thanks to the Author of All things in those instances is what enabled both of you to find success.

Great topic. A note about photographing your projects. The word I use as my endpoint goal for taking pics of my work is "sexy". You gotta make it look sexy and don't be satisfied with less. Think about how advertisers make products look sexy in magazines or tv. No you don't necessarily need a bombshell in a bikini but you do need uncluttered/clean backgrounds, interesting angles and settings, IN FOCUS, decent lighting, as well as after photo editing and cropping (among other things.) Cheers

DO IT! There is no try, you do it, or you don't. I've had so many people that tell me they are "working on it", but years go by with no real progress. Focus on 1 thing and finish it, there's nothing that motivates me more than getting a project finished, good pictures taken, advertised and packaged up for shipping. That last part is important if you are not offering local pickup, there's something that's so demotivational (for me personally, ymmv) about having to try and get something packaged for shipping AFTER it's already sold and the customer is expecting that tracking number asap. It's like a doomsday clock, panic sets in, it's not fun, I hate it so much! Do yourself a huge favor and have it ready to ship BEFORE you get it listed, it's also really nice to have the size and weight to plug into the shipping service ready to go, takes the guesswork out of shipping costs, and if you're using calculated shipping, your potential customers can see what the actual cost is for shipping to their location. If it's the heat that's holding you up, I have a secret weapon that you may like to give a try, buy a tyvec hazmat suit, seriously, they're around $15, or two for $20. Find some lightweight "floppy" vacuum cleaner hose and thoroughly clean the inside, then mount a little computer fan to the end with a light air filter, mine is fashioned from a furnace filter. Have it blowing up one of your legs and lightly secure other leg cuff and wrists with tape or rubber bands, have 90% of the breeze flowing out the neck hole, having that nice breeze across your face is a game changer, no more oily spots of sweat dripping on your virgin wood causing more work and frustration! It'll puff out making you feel like the giant marshmallow man on Ghostbusters lol, tape wrapped around it in strategic places will take care of that issue. Mechanics coveralls work in a pinch with a slightly larger fan, but the air flow won't be nearly as good across your neck and face due to loss of pressure since the fabric is breathable, tyvec hazmat suits are air tight. Just remember that- DO OR DO NOT. THERE_IS _NO_TRY. Einstein told his naysayers, that berated him for his failures, " I didn't fail 1,000 times creating the best filament for my light bulb, I successfully found 1,000 ways how not to make a light bulb". A positive attitude is the key to success. You only fail when you stop trying! Have fun getting it done well, that's my motto, my mantra, my way of life. Now get to work, like now, like right now now.

I haven't yet gotten a single piece listed online yet but will this summer. I can only build at my house in the country, and then I'll list on Japanese sites. Do you know anyone who builds in another country and sells to the US? I'm curious to know that degree of success can be had this way. My old storage buildings have a lot of very old lumber and I could definitely make some nice pieces from them to export.

I’m going through tough times now but I’m still standing. I listed something on Facebook Market Place but nothing yet. I want to make videos but too self conscious. I have hardly no room to photograph and no special lighting or equipment. I don’t know how you can do it. I do have a new table saw which I have had for three years but kind of afraid to use it. Got to do something because I’m sinking. BTW where is Washington? I missed the live but I’m from Washington State

Howdy Mornin Mr. 731... I was able to catch the first 10 minutes of your live stream but work got in the way. Just watched it last night. You were speaking about taking good video and photos.... I have a question about "video" side of things. I have a video recorder which I've been using for my builds. However, the videos take up ALOT of space and my computer doesn't have enough storage for me to upload them from the SD cards. I ended up just buying more SD cards so I could continue to record. But, the underlying problem still remains. If I can't get the videos off the SD cards to my computer, then I can't edit them etc to post on KZbin. Currently, I have over 500gig of videos but I don't know what to do now. I thought maybe I should get an external hard drive, I dunno. Is this normal? Or am I trying to upload videos incorrectly? When you take videos, how much space (gigs) do your videos take up? What is the process you do to get videos from camera to editing software to Voice over to KZbin?
@731Woodworks
@731Woodworks 2 жыл бұрын
Most of my videos take up 50 to 60GB each for filming. After editing the file size is near 300 to sometimes 500GB per file, including the editing library, graphics, etc. Currently I am using external HD to store them. However recently I had one of those crash and lost about a years worth of videos. So no I'm researching a NAS or DAS solution that has RAID backups.

Projects don’t sell unless they are custom. Learn how to do everything from Louis XIV to mid century modern to epoxy river abortions and then do exactly what the client tells you. You’re not an artist, you’re an artisan. You don’t have ideas. You offer up your skill as a craftsman to give body to other peoples ideas.
