I've been away for a long time. It was never my intention to disappear, but it's been a tumultuous road. There's a lot of story to tell, and what started as a long blog post, then turned into an update vlog, has now become a full fledged video essay about everything that's happened over the last seven years since starting this channel.
I wanted to tell my KZbin story. Everything from why I started making videos, to why I stopped...and why I'm coming back.

It's really refreshing to see a creator talk candidly about their experience. It's not easy, and a video like this is really invaluable for anyone who might dream of one day making content for a living. You've always put out killer content, and i can't wait to be inspired by this next phase.

Thank you for saying so, it definitely was not an easy video for me to make. But it's part of why I wanted to do it this way, I know that a lot of people go through this same sort of struggle, and if sharing my story helps anyone than any anxiety I might feel about posting something like this is worth it.

This was great, and visually engaging. I can certainly relate on a lot of levels. I wish there was a better way for creators who just can't make frequent uploads to benefit algorithmically.

I appreciate you saying so! I'm hoping that we continue to see some improvement, things like Nebula or Patreon are helping to push things in a better direction, but the algorithm will likely hold its sway far into the future, and I don't know what any of us can do to change that unfortunately.

As a Creator on KZbin whose been trying to get a foothold for a couple of years, tried many different endeavors, and just now started to find my style I just want to say thank you. This video was so encouraging to know that I'm not the only one whose had a hard time being a Creator on KZbin. Even if your channel has over 100 Thousand times more subscribers than mine. Thank you for being an inspiration. Love your work even though I just found it. Keep it up :)

A lot of good creators went silent after 2020, it's totally understandable and really isn't any reason for most of us to unsubscribe since your videos have such high rewatch value. But even without that, I think most of us who are left understand that people go through creative peaks and valleys, and no one can be a perpetual content machine. So I will never unsubscribe! I will always be here, waiting, for the rebirth of a master...

i do feel sorry for the toxic youtube community and system in general. but i dont get it why youtubers tend to complain about it more and more these days. no one made you start this uncomfortable journey and it is unfair most of the time, no doubt.. like you took off your pink glasses and realised this is not that fun as some goofy mr beast and others like him? i think genuine creative acitivity is always hard and overwhelming with hurt. so just keep on making videos which you like or give up and switch to something else.
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I actually agree with that typically speaking. When I hear the multimillionaire creators complaining about the platform I tend to roll my eyes, like sorry you can't afford your third mansion yet lol. But I think it's different for smaller creators who can't afford a simple living, and the frustration I've felt and that I know many have as well is just the effect that has on the content available on the platform. It's like the same thing as why people get frustrated with Marvel or Disney, because when that soaks up all of the attention and the money and the power it just makes it harder for smaller interesting movies or TV to get made. And that's why I complain about things on KZbin, because I think it'd be a really sad thing to have no more channels like CaptainDisillusion or Every Frame a Painting, but they're becoming fewer and farther apart for a reason. Not because of the lack of creativity, or overwhelming with hurt, but like logistically not being able to do it with the money they make from their content. And that's been consistently the debate for me, I've loved doing it but if it can't provide a living I obviously can't just keep doing that in the same capacity, but I've so enjoyed making each of my videos and so many seem to enjoy them that I've tried to find every way I can to keep doing it. But I hope it's clear with how much other work I've done elsewhere that I'm always ready for the possibility of this simply not being my path, and ultimately that would be okay too, but I'm not walking away from it anytime soon.

One of the beautiful but frustrating things about life, is that unlike a movie, there is no defined plot or ending. It just keeps going, and you have to make your own meaning and path through it. Keep doing what you enjoy, and stay true to your creative vision. That's your identity, what sets you apart from any of the other millions of people uploading videos to this site. From what you outlined here, it's clear that you had the most success when you were able to make videos your way, at your speed. Hopefully your new living situation will allow you the flexibility you need. I'm rooting for you, and I know many others are too. Don't be discouraged if you don't see instant success with this new push, because it will probably take time to build up inertia again, and the recommendation algorithm can of course be fickle.

@@daniel_netzel id love that. I’ve been trying and failing at film analysis editing and video essays or essay writing in general. I got into films a little late in life and one of the things that attracted me to the medium was the intelligence found in film analysis. How people can write whole books on the meaning of a shot. It has excites me but more often than not has intimidated me making video essays rather bitter sweet since I could have never reached the conclusion the essayist had made no spoken about it as eloquently.

It's great to see you back again Daniel. I'm glad that you're in a better place both financially and mentally now. I only have a small channel myself and my videos aren't in the same niche as yours, or anywhere near the quality either. But I too sometimes find it hard to keep up with the consistent uploads whilst trying to maintain a full time job as well. Until you start a KZbin channel yourself, you don't realise just how much work is involved. It's not just about recording and uploading a video. It can become all consuming and you find yourself having less and less time to spend with family and friends. In my actual job I work 7 days in a row of 12 and half hour night shifts. So, that means I have no time after to do videos for the channel. Which means on my days off I have to batch record videos and then edit, so I can publish whilst in work. Because of the way I'm currently doing my videos I can't really spend the time on them that I'd like to really. I'd also sometimes have ideas for videos to make them a bit more interesting or different, but just can't due to time constraints and deadlines. Sorry I've kind of gone off on a tangent here. But I'm glad that you've talked about all of this in your video, as I think it affects a lot of channels, both big and small. The KZbin grind is real. I can't wait to see your upcoming videos. Take as long as you need to get them to the quality that you're happy with. We're all still here after nearly a year, so I'm sure we can wait a little bit longer if that's what it takes. Quality over quantity has always been part of what makes your channel so special.
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 2 жыл бұрын
It's something I feel like a lot of people don't know until they get going, but it's such an effort to maintain a KZbin channel properly, if you have to work any jobs on the side then it's incredibly difficult. I've often wondered how many successful KZbinrs either came from a lot of money or had some crazy savings built, because I don't see how else some people can do it lol I was worried people would think I was bashing certain creators or something, but I really did just want to highlight the reality of what being a smaller KZbinr can be like for so many, and I'm glad that you found something relatable in that. I hope your journey is kind to you, and I wish the blessing of the algorithm onto you! Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciated your comment

KZbin keeps removing my comment because I mention other platforms, be aware that today shorter content is king, a video like this that’s 27 minutes long only you and me and some people would watch till the end. (You could guess the rest of my comment) Anyway, thanks for the video, I’m facing the same struggle here on my channel, quality vs quantity. While I work as a film editor here in Egypt. This video inspired me to give it another try, one last one. Wish me luck

Funnily enough I've seen a lot of channels do really well with the long uploads, it just depends on the type of video, which this admittedly is probably not lol But if you're keeping people engaged in a long video, KZbin takes that as a good sign. I think first things first I just want to try and get more into a regular swing of uploading videos again, but as I climb more into comfortability again and everything, I think I'll do more streaming or something like that, I never want that to be all I do but I'm definitely open to adding that type of content into the mix.

Welcome back, I am glad to see that you are doing better. I really enjoyed that you took your time to give the journey that provided context for your journey and insight in your plans. I'll be here for the next ones and I agree that you should delay your videos whenever you feel that you need more time on it.

Let me tell you I am glad to be doing better haha. I think we're all kind of hardwired not to want to share our struggles, but it definitely got dark for a while there, and it feels good to be soaking in the warmth of light again. Thanks for sticking around man :)

I got a little discouraged when I saw Drew Gooden sort of beat me to the punch, but I actually just said screw it, stopped myself from watching his video and decided to keep pushing ahead with mine anyways, it's a little later in the pipeline but it's going to be a big one. I think it's as perfect as a show of its time could be, it's my favorite show of all time(tied with Breaking Bad lol), and man I have a lot to say on it lol

My favorite KZbinr had said that he would never leave KZbin, and would keep uploading videos. But, he hasn't made a new video in four days. All KZbinrs (pretty much), move into a much nicer house than where they were living before.

Thank you for this video. Thank you for the insight. When it comes to your music, you've always had what you need--the drive, the passion, the physical ability. In my humble opinion, waiting for the perfect moment or to get the perfect this or that to aid our endeavour's is a mistake so many of us make and a waste of time that we do not know we actually have to waste. Best wishes and success.

Thanks for watching! Oh I totally hear you, and I've been writing and recording for my own pleasure since before ever starting KZbin, even made a few EPs and such, but after 15 years of only having a guitar and a microphone, it's just time for an upgrade lol I do agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment though, to just get started regardless of the limitations. But I'm just at a point where I'm ready to work with more sounds. I've known people to play that game forever, always needing that next thing before they're ready, constantly moving that goalpost with every bit of progress, but honestly it is just the keyboard haha. It'll be a while because I'm prioritizing getting the wheels turning on YT again, and any money I've been able to save is being put towards that goal first and foremost, but while there are a million things that I'd LIKE to have for recording a professional album, the keyboard is the only one that's non-negotiable for me. Because then I can use drums, piano, bass, strings, horns, woodwind, synths, (from the Komplete library that sounds amazing btw), all on one instrument, and honestly you have no idea how excited that prospect makes me. Best wishes you to my friend!

@@daniel_netzel I totally get it and get where you're coming from friend. I truly hope you get that upgrade sooner than later and are able to share more of your talent with the world in a way that makes you proud. Your videos are phenomenal and I personally think that while the visuals and editing that accompany the dialogue are superb--you can get away with focusing less on the visuals (such as just playing a loop of a trailer on shorter vids for instance) and just delivering some of that GREAT and insightful commentary. Just throwing it out there. And please don't let the algorithm frustrate you or get you down (easier said than done, I know) cuz it has no bearing on the quality of your work.

@@shuckacuckmean as the op may be, they're not wrong. it is his third good bye video so far. Imo it would have been better if they made a video essay about, well, film analysis. Instead of why they aren't making videos.
