Ahead of Community season 6, Brown announced that she wouldn't be returning so that she could take care of her ailing father. Due to the TV series' grueling work schedule, Brown didn't have the time to take care of her father full-time in addition to her commitments as a series regular.

I love community. Watched it 4 times. After Chevy left, then it was Donald with him. Then Yvette, the study group grew smaller and smaller. So sad Donald and Chevy didn’t get to sit at the Mark II table😢😭

Community Season 5 was when it ended for me in my heart. Seeing Donald leave was extremely hard, but seeing Yvette leave too sealed the deal for me at that point. Only 4 of the Greendale 7 were left, and Abed was the only one of color :(

It's good that she left the show for a good reason to take care of her dad but I don't know why she didn't tell the study group that she was leaving and just leave without explanation in the end of Season 5. In the beginning of Season 6, the whole study group was wondering where she was. I just noticed the study group is getting smaller and smaller and it's just four characters out of seven in the study group. First, Chevy Chase leaves, then Donald Glover, then lastly, Yvette Nicole Brown. With the exception of Pierce who left, the show gets rid of black characters so there are no black characters in Season 6. Also, Abed is the only colored character in Season 6.

I believe her leaving was known to the crew. She is even referencing in her "Spin-off" of her actual situation. Shirley became the assistant/care taker of an old man on the verge of dementia and depression.
