These are very helpful videos. When I was in Columbia and Guatemala I discovered that it is much easier to understand the city people and very challenging to understand the county people. It was also a lot easier to understand the younger crowd and than understanding the elderly. Maybe you can make future videos with those types of accents.

This was a great video. It was much easier to understand Jose! I still cannot tell the difference between their accents. Jose speaks more clearly and slowly. The interview with the teacher was the most difficult to understand, followed by the bookstore owner. Jose is the easiest to understand. The one thing i can naturally do is to roll my r's. That's my. Big strength for Spanish

Crystal K josa isn’t really pronouncing the letter D in some of his words but there’s not that much of a different, most costeños have a stronger accent

Nice video. I have just started the active listening part of lesson plan. There was a difference between your accents. I got the gist of the conversation but there were a lot of words that I had to write down to look up. Will definitely have to watch this at least 3 more times.

José speaks differently (pero muy entendible) from other Colombian "costeños" that I have met in Cartagena, etc - beautiful message in this interview - parece muy emprendedor José. My wife and I toured Parque Arví en Santa Elena-Medellín and one of the carabineros (un costeño) showed us the the "pato para lo caballo" - pasto para los caballos.

I am trying to learn Spanish in western Puerto Rico. Based upon other comments, it sounds like the costeńos usually speak like the Puerto Ricans (dropping d´s, s´s and sometimes whole syllables). Maybe José has lost part of his accent after 20 years, but I also got the impression that he was choosing simple words on purpose and speaking clearly for us.

Will you kindly clarify what is the meaning of the verb arrancar (He used arrancamos, arranco ... several time)? Dictionary says 'to pull out'. It doesn't quite fit in with the context in this video. thank you.

I found your interviews with Luisa and Jose easier to understand compared to those with the owner of the bookstore and the teacher, mostly because the latter two spoke softly. I also noticed that in those two interviews, you used a handheld mic. I wonder if that affected the sound somehow.

Thanks for your comment. Yeah, I think the biggest problem was they were both soft spoken which did not give the depth to the sound like Luisa and Jose did. Not sure if using a lav mic instead of a hand held would have made much of a difference but will keep that in mind in the future. - Cody

I didn't feel that his accent was so different from other Spanish speakers I've listened to. He spoke faster than you but I have a feeling that you speak more slowly for the sake of your students. Once, when I was in Mexico someone asked why it was they could understand my English and not that of other North Americans. I always make a point of slowing my speech down when talking with non native English speakers. I have a VERY hard time understanding Cubans and Spanish speakers from the Dominican Republic because ellos hablan tan rapidamente, como un cuerno de chivo!!! jajaja

+Victoria Muir jajaja... No conocía esa expresión. That's funny, a lot of people have commented or asked if I speak slowly... I didn't think I did (at least consciously) but hey! Maybe I do? Jajaja... I honestly think it's a habit I got from teaching Spanish in other places. I always made sure I enunciated very well. Maybe in the process I also slow it down a bit. ¡Un abrazo!

Maria, really enjoy your videos. One thing that drives me nuts is when you use the Spanish "i" in English words that contain that letter in them. For example, you pronounce words like "video", "will", "tips" with the Spanish value. You don't have to do that. I'm an ESL teacher who specializes in principiantes que no hablan inglés. I tell them when they see a "i" in an English word, always use a relaxed en-between English sound. With a little coaching, they sound much more like English speakers. That gives them enormous confidence to learn more. Just a suggestion - it will really help add to your very good knowledge and command of English. Thanks

Your accents were quite similar, but not excatly the same. I work with Puetro Ricans, so y'all sound a little nasal with the "A's", but you still have those American consonants. Probably more than Puerto Ricans do oddly enough. Or maybe that's Quechua influence?
