At the Field Hospital in Pleiku, in the bed next to me in the E.R. was a young man dying and completely delirious. He was shot up so badly that he was practically unrecognizable. A nurse came and sat by his bedside when she was not on duty and spoke to him, holding his hand, and pretended to be his mother. She was so kind. After four days the young soldier died in the arms of his loving mother. That young lady deserves our nations undying gratitude.

I was a fortunate Medical Corpsman 91A10 then schooling for my MOS was Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Technician 91U20, rank Specialist 5. After basic training, Medical Corpsman, EENT school Fort Sam Houston, OJT @ Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, TX. Stationed St. Louis, MO Armed Forces Examining & Entrance Station 1967-1969. Worked with great people in all three locations. When working in the El Paso clinic, one little girl (4-5) came in her father was a Major. He said she always wanted to see & talk to me. I often wonder how she is, among others that I have met back then! One little boy would always cling to me during treatment and the other staff would have to send me out of the room so that they could administer the test as he would grab onto me and not want to let go! Spent a week in the hospital at Beaumont General as they thought I might have meningitis, thankfully I didn’t have it!

Welcome home, Thank you, and Semper Fi Brother .. And the Nurses... Women of character are not at all hard to find in the military . . However,... Women of extraordinary character are the light among them. This Nurse spoke of the bravery of the wounded, "They were in pain, but you didn't see it" ... That's truth. I have met many wounded Veterans, every one of them, men and women, brave beyond words, fearless in their recovery... They are indeed tall in character. So then, What about these Nurses... Well, it is one thing to witness or go through a traumatic event.. but to see, and deal hands on with trauma multiple times every day, for weeks, months, even years on end ? And they had their losses too. In more ways than one I'm sure. The bravery she spoke of was, and still is, oft inspired by their own bravery. Their courage, their fortitude, their compassion... Hard knowledge, gentle hands, warm heart, cold reality. She didn't speak too much on their own bravery, I thought I would mention it... and thank God for it. God Bless them. Thank you, and thank you again Nurses, and Docs, from an old Gunny...

That is just a nursing statement that doesn’t come with any other job in the world, you were their nurse, their mother, sister or girl friend. That is nursing and it takes someone special to be able to do that with some young man alone with a missing arm now and needing to talk with his mother. You may originally thought it was a good way to pay for school but the reality is you were being called to do something very special and that was to serve as a military nurse during the time of a war. Hope to hear many more of your stories.
