In 1989, Morley Safer spoke with female combat nurses who helped save countless lives in Vietnam but, like male veterans, were sometimes met with contempt upon returning home.

60 Minutes, the most successful American television broadcast in history, began its 52nd season in September. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 is still a hit in 2020. 60 Minutes makes Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 nearly every week and was the #1 weekly television broadcast three times last season.
The program still averages more than 10 million viewers, more than double the audience of its nearest network news magazine competitor. The average audience for a 60 Minutes broadcast is 150% higher than those of the network morning news programs; the audience dwarfs the number of viewers drawn by the most popular cable news programs.
About a million more people listen to the 60 Minutes radio simulcast in several major cities and on its companion podcast. Tens of thousands each week experience 60 Minutes online. The broadcast’s segments can be watched at 60Minutes.com and on the CBS All Access app. Its webcast, 60MinutesOvertime.com, offers content originally produced for the web, including behind-the-scenes video about the production of 60 Minutes stories and timely archival segments.
60 Minutes has won every major broadcast award. Its 25 Peabody and 150 Emmy awards are the most won by any single news program. It has also won 20 duPont-Columbia University journalism awards. Other distinguished journalism honors won multiple times include the George Polk, RTDNA Edward R. Murrow, Investigative Reporters and Editors, RFK Journalism, Sigma Delta Chi and Gerald Loeb awards.
60 Minutes premiered on CBS September 24, 1968. Bill Owens is the program’s executive producer. The correspondents and contributors of 60 Minutes are Sharyn Alfonsi, Anderson Cooper, John Dickerson, Norah O’Donnell, Scott Pelley, Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and L. Jon Wertheim.

God bless them all. My Mum was an Nurse in WW2. Spoke very little of it. Just one story, She was in the back of an Ambulance with a burnt Airman and they were driving very slowly in bad fog. She was holding him in her arms and he looked up and smiled said "hi Mum" and died. Bless them all.

I did 2 tours in Vietnam US Army Special Forces medevac duty. There aren't enough words to describe what the combat nurses went through. I still remember meeting comedian Martha Raye that ditched a few USO performances to go help at MASH units. Not only was she a US Army Special Forces Lt Colonel in the reserves, but she was also a licensed RN with a successful entertainment career. She had an impact on me that I felt compelled to attend her funeral at Fort Bragg many years later.

I was wounded (Blinded) in Vietnam, I was flown from the field at night to a mash unit, from there I was flown to Da Nang and I had been given some pain killer injections... I remember the small of perfume, (Note: my team had spent 330 on the DMZ and Laos borders, we had not seen females, villagers, just NVA. She touched my face and told me not to worry as they would take care of me... I truly believed I was dead and she was an Angle taking me to heaven... she was an Angle, all the nurses in my ward were....In Australia I found out that they also wore perfume to calm the solders... in both Armies that was against regulations.... common sense prevailed. Thank you for being there.

I quite agree; I find firstly shocking how the American public treated their service people, secondly that every person or animal who fought out there should be remembered with statue if just one is. The sad inditement of the American public who could stand up and declare any sort of righteousness regarding those that did go, when they themselves did not is just plain cowardice & disgusting. I am a UK veteran Royal Navy, and while serving we pulled into Acapulco for a few days in 1977. In the old town there, there were many bars with Vietnamese Veterans just drinking themselves into oblivion, mostly because people of their own country disowned them. Disgusting.

@@FreedomDave-ci2gs He might be talking about Kristin Hannah's novel The Women - probably based on Diane Carlson Evan's tour of duty. Diane has a book called "Healing Wounds" which is not only about her service but also her efforts & success at getting the women's memorial on The Mall. I highly recommend Diane's book. Hannah's novel got too Harlequin romancy for me in the end although I think the author wrote well. PS. I'm also a former Army nurse - 2 tours in Nam - Qui Nhon 68-69, Long Bien 70-71.

@robertanglee4735... Thanks, you for your service and sacrifice during the Vietnam conflict and welcome home Sir. I dedicate these two songs from SSgt Barry Sadler 1966 record album "Ballad of the Green Beret." to you and all of our Vietnam Vets. 🙏 "I'm a Lucky One" SSgt Barry Sadler I'm going home my tour is done. I'm going home I'm a lucky one. But I left friends behind me. who won't come home no more. Yes many friends remain forever. On that bloody shore. But at night when I sleep I know my dreams will be. About my friends I left across the sea. I'll hear verbal young men harn laugh again out loud. We'll all be together in a happy crowd. But then I hear the sound of bullets whining overhead. Feel the crash of morters and all my firends are dead. My friends they fought and gave their all. My friends they died for freedoms call. As my dream is ending they'll come and say goodbye. Though I'm sound asleep a tear I'll cry And they say something which fills my heart with pain. Tell them about us Sadler don't let us die in vain. I'm going home my tour is done. I'm going home I'm a lucky one "Salute to the Nurses" SSgt Barry Sadler After the battle after the fight many owe their lives to the ladies and men in white And all of the men in this war torn land salute the nurses of Vietnam They know the awful toll of war each day they know more than any the price we pay A soldier his hands too burned to write a nurse takes down his words through the lonely night They have gone to the front where men fought in the night from Pleiku to Qui Nhon where war these men fight Many a wounded soldier pain is eased for a while by opening his eyes to see a nurses smile To each of the wounded on the operating shelf these nurses give a part of themselves I know every soldier to the last man will sometimes say a prayer for the nurses of Vietnam After the battle after the fight many owe their lives to the ladies and men in white And all of the men in this war torn land salute the nurses of Vietnam

The sad part is that you can't change how people were treated back in Vietnam coming back. All you can do now is give them proper respect and honor that they earned. There's still many who have PTSD and limbs lost that will never go away. All you can do is give them respect and hopefully family members can steer them to the right therapist or support group to help them cope with what they saw and did.

My grandfather was a front line Feild Surgeon in the US Army during WWII. They would sort the casualties into three categories, can't save, shouldn't save & will save. When I asked him about the "shouldn't save" he explained "when a soldier sets off a land mine he was trying to disarm, what can you do, no arms, no face, no eyes, what can you do?". They had the ambulance drivers inform the medics in the field to give the "can't save's" & "shouldn't save's" enough morphine to send them home so that the enlisted men at their field hospital didn't have to use morphine & alcohol to make them stop screaming. As for PTSD, my grandfather drank a fifth of rye every night to sleep for three years after the war...

When I was in high school, I won a contest sponsored by a veteran organization, and was invited to a Veteran's Day dinner event. There, to my surprise, I saw Martha Raye, whom I recognized as the woman in the Polident commercial. Turned out she was also a military nurse. When she spoke, she reminded the men in the room that there were women serving in (Vietnam) war too. Even though they were nurses, they faced same risk as the men. So she insisted that the nurse/women division deserve equal present as men at veteran occasions like the Veteran Day's dinner event. And Martha traveled regularly to Vietnam during the war to entertain American troops. She was and seen by the soldiers as one of the 'boys', and she is buried with them at Fort Bragg, in NC.

@richardsierra9884... If you haven't seen this 2006 documentary Vietnam Nurses With Dana Delany offers viewers a brief but powerful glimpse into nursing during the Vietnam War. The film combines provocative interviews with eight nurses-Maureen Adduci, Diane Carlson Evans, Dorothy Harris, Judy Herrington, Susan O'Neill, Candice Sullivan, Donna White, and Sharon Zimpher-with captivating film footage and photographs to produce an intellectually and visually compelling narrative that follows the women from their decision to become military nurses, through their wartime experiences, and their postwar recovery. Funded by Johnson & Johnson and Women's Entertainment Television, the documentary has won critical acclaim, including an Emmy Award for editing. The title of the video "Vietnam Nurses - Vietnam Women's Memorial - Documentary With Dana Delany" it's worth searching out. running 44:41 minutes in length

I grew up in the 1960s. As a kid , I thought the war and nightly body count on tv every night was normal. How different it all looks to me now. God Bless the people who served and those who experienced losses.

Those Americans that treated our military personnel so poorly should be ashamed and hopefully never forget that they hurt the wrong people in this way.

In those days it seemed to me that it was worse being "home" than in Vietnam: in the war, I could count on almost everybody because we were all in it, together; back "home," I never knew who was going to insult me or accuse me of something vile (baby killer, etc.), although the ones who wouldn't give me the time of day were the worst. I met a few nurses and MDs there; great people, great women, great patriots. They too deserve a lot of credit and respect from the nation. U. S. Army, 91Bravo, '69 - '72.

Several of my Uncles are Vietnam vets. One had four chopers shot out from under him serving as a medivac crew chief. I live not too far from the base (now a National Guard training site) where he trained. I remember as a child going to Mineral Wells and seeing him before he left.

My brother, Mike Eldridge, went to Vietnam in 68 and 69. When he returned stateside, getting off the plane, the guys encountered war protesters who spit on these guys who had risked their lives. I was devastated.

@danm.bagley5030... thank you for you service and sacrifice during the Vietnam conflict and welcome home Sir. I dedicate these two songs by SSgt Barry Sadler from his 1966 record album Ballads of the Green Berets to you and all who severed our country during the Vietnam conflict. "I'm a Lucky One" SSgt Barry Sadler I'm going home, my tour is done I'm going home, I'm a lucky one But I left friends behind me Who won't come home no more Yes many friends remain forever On that bloody shore But at night when I sleep, I know my dreams will be About my friends I left across the sea I'll here verbal young men harn, laugh again out loud We'll all be together in a happy crowd But then I hear the sound of bullets whining overhead Feel the crash of morters and all my friends are dead My friends they fought and gave their all My friends they died for freedoms call As my dream was ending, they'll come and say goodbye Though I'm sound asleep a tear I'll cry And they say something which fills my heart with pain Tell them about us Sadler, don't let us die in vain I'm going home, my tour is done I'm going home, I'm a lucky one "Salute to the Nurses" SSgt Barry Sadler After the battle after the fight many owe their lives to the ladies and men in white And all of the men in this war torn land salute the nurses of Vietnam They know the awful toll of war each day they know more than any the price we pay A soldier his hands too burned to write a nurse takes down his words through the lonely night They have gone to the front where men fought in the night from Pleiku to Qui Nhon where war these men fight Many a wounded soldier pain is eased for a while by opening his eyes to see a nurses smile To each of the wounded on the operating shelf these nurses give a part of themselves I know every soldier to the last man will sometimes say a prayer for the nurses of Vietnam After the battle after the fight many owe their lives to the ladies and men in white And all of the men in this war torn land salute the nurses of Vietnam.
