I did 2 tours in Vietnam US Army Special Forces medevac duty. There aren't enough words to describe what the combat nurses went through. I still remember meeting comedian Martha Raye that ditched a few USO performances to go help at MASH units. Not only was she a US Army Special Forces Lt Colonel in the reserves, but she was also a licensed RN with a successful entertainment career. She had an impact on me that I felt compelled to attend her funeral at Fort Bragg many years later.

I was wounded (Blinded) in Vietnam, I was flown from the field at night to a mash unit, from there I was flown to Da Nang and I had been given some pain killer injections... I remember the small of perfume, (Note: my team had spent 330 on the DMZ and Laos borders, we had not seen females, villagers, just NVA. She touched my face and told me not to worry as they would take care of me... I truly believed I was dead and she was an Angle taking me to heaven... she was an Angle, all the nurses in my ward were....In Australia I found out that they also wore perfume to calm the solders... in both Armies that was against regulations.... common sense prevailed. I quite agree; I find firstly shocking how the American public treated their service people, secondly that every person or animal who fought out there should be remembered with statue if just one is. The sad inditement of the American public who could stand up and declare any sort of righteousness regarding those that did go, when they themselves did not is just plain cowardice & disgusting. I am a UK veteran Royal Navy, and while serving we pulled into Acapulco for a few days in 1977. In the old town there, there were many bars with Vietnamese Veterans just drinking themselves into oblivion, mostly because people of their own country disowned them. Disgusting.

The sad part is that you can't change how people were treated back in Vietnam coming back. All you can do now is give them proper respect and honor that they earned. There's still many who have PTSD and limbs lost that will never go away. All you can do is give them respect and hopefully family members can steer them to the right therapist or support group to help them cope with what they saw and did.

My grandfather was a front line Feild Surgeon in the US Army during WWII. They would sort the casualties into three categories, can't save, shouldn't save & will save. When I asked him about the "shouldn't save" he explained "when a soldier sets off a land mine he was trying to disarm, what can you do, no arms, no face, no eyes, what can you do?". They had the ambulance drivers inform the medics in the field to give the "can't save's" & "shouldn't save's" enough morphine to send them home so that the enlisted men at their field hospital didn't have to use morphine & alcohol to make them stop screaming. As for PTSD, my grandfather drank a fifth of rye every night to sleep for three years after the war...

When I was in high school, I won a contest sponsored by a veteran organization, and was invited to a Veteran's Day dinner event. There, to my surprise, I saw Martha Raye, whom I recognized as the woman in the Polident commercial. Turned out she was also a military nurse. When she spoke, she reminded the men in the room that there were women serving in (Vietnam) war too. Even though they were nurses, they faced same risk as the men. So she insisted that the nurse/women division deserve equal present as men at veteran occasions like the Veteran Day's dinner event. And Martha traveled regularly to Vietnam during the war to entertain American troops. She was and seen by the soldiers as one of the 'boys', and she is buried with them at Fort Bragg, in NC.
